I'm so glad that Emily was comfortable to tell people that she stutters. I am also a person who stutters since I was a kid. I wish I could her meet one day and talk with her about stuttering. Very proud of her :D

unless its cause by a physiological issue it isnt. Most childhood stuttering isnt caused by a physiological issue. So for the most part it isn't.

Thank you Emily for continuously speaking about stuttering. As a person (female) who stutters you are an inspiration and the more we talk and create awareness about stuttering the better chance we have at changing the way the world views stuttering and the way we can overcome the stigma that is attached enabling each of us to communicate effectively regardless if we have a stutter or not. Thank you.

Where would we be without our teachers? What a lovely story about how a teacher pushed her to become what she is now. Educators need more recognition and acknowledgment of their worth in society. Thank God for teachers!!

My name is Emily too, but I often give other names during introductions because stuttering still gets in the way. I've love Emily Blunt as an actress and because her stuttering experiences are so similar to my own. I have a father and uncle who stutter, I'm British American, and it's followed me into adulthood. I'm so thankful for her story, it's given myself and others hope.

Glad she talks about how she still actually has a stutter. I don't have proof of this beyond a lot of anecdotal evidence, but I believe that fewer people "grow out it" than researchers think. I believe that a person's stutter may lessen to the point where it can often be hidden, but that actually there are more adult stutterers than are accounted for.

I can totally realte to what she is saying. I didnt stutter but i had a major speech impediment as a kid and growing up. I work very hard to speak clearly and to be able to enunciate and pronunciate which is very hard for some people. And it doesnt every truly goes away. I have moments when certain words get paired up or when j talk fast where it becomes a tongue twister and the impediment resurfaces.

Interesting - thanks Emily for bringing attention to stuttering, i dealt with it throughout elementary and highschool, i developed anxiety as a consequence of my stutters during class. It started going away when I focused more on my English, which is the interesting part because I wouldnt stutter in a different language, so I became a translator. I dont ever translate anymore for others, but I still practice my english everyday at work. So because i gained more confidence in this second language, i also gained pride in being one of the few people in my classes that was actually fluent in english and translation came easily for me, i took this confidence and bring it with me everytime i speak Spanish to people outside my group of friends and family, and i rarely stutter anymore. It does come back from time to time when I feel stressed or pressured about finishing tasks and whatnot, but it is really rare. Idk why im sharing this with the internet haha

My best friend stutters, and she has now got braces. She is incredible, and handles it really well. She has taken drama for gcse and loves acting, but we are in such a big school that I feel she sometimes gets shunted aside. When I talk to her I don’t even realise she does it, and I don’t think she would be the same without it, it’s just like having freckles or glasses, and it makes her unique and stand out from the crowd. Xx

Is it weird that I find stuttering kind of disarming and beautiful and raw? I applaud everyone who conquers that they feel is holding them back, but I think in a really overly fast-paced 'fake it til you make it' world, there's something really beautiful about just not being cookie cutter... whether you wear that on the outside or not, we all have it.

I’m so happy she’s open about this! I’ve never stuttered but I had/have a speech impediment called ‘cluttering’ which is kinda similar that really bothered me as a kid, and I didn’t even know it was a speech impediment until now as an adult. It’ll still flare up from time to time, but at least now I know it’s a neurological thing and not just nervousness.

This is so true. im currently 27 yo. And im ashamed that i stutter alot. I have difficulty on starting certain vowels and consonants thats starts with an "ugh" or 'stressed' sound. like ( a,i,e, c, k,o) its always an extra effort for me to formulate a sentence because first, in my mind i try to modify the sentence like for example: Can we go now?.... i modify this into "lets go now, ok?" since i can pronounce "L" with ease rather than 'Can'. Being a stutter fcked my life bigtime. i become introvert and not good at public speaking. I wish stuttering is just like a disease that can be treated with medication. But reality its not. Like emily said, Its really not about anxious thing, or about shy thing. Its about the connection between brain/tongue mystery. :(

I have a colleague who is a stutterer - and I am amazed again and again about his dry humour and intelligence, which I only found out by having lunch together every day. Because he just does a "lower" job where not much brain is needed there is this prejudice that stuttering is connected with "less" intelligence. And this is so sad. I am sad that I had this prejudice and I am sad that he has no better job because employers dont have - or dont want to make - time to find out more about him.

The worst thing is about stuttering what I have experienced that they have treated me like a mentally damaged person and after a while I have believed it. Even my own family wanted a healthy child, so they have forced me into different therapies instead of loving and supporting me. Clinical studies say that stuttering is a sign of emotional neglect. I always wished to be like an average person, to not carry this cross, but stuttering is also part of me. True friends will love you unconditionally and they helped me a lot to defeat the self blame and shame. I have wasted so much energy to talk how people have expected it. Later I have joined a little stutterer group and I have seen much worse cases and everybody have said I am just a soft case. Now I work as a pharmacist, so I speak with plenty of customers day by day. Even adults have commented about my accent and my stuttering which have caused sadness. I have noticed it is worse under stress, tiredness or when they remind me as I don't necessarily hear myself how I am stuttering. I have recorded my own voice a few times, but it was shocing. I have also realised I stutter less in English and more on my native Hungarian language. Anyway I am proud of Emily Blunt and Rowan Atkinson that they were talking about this problem.
