Emetophobia & Food Avoidance Recovery

There were foods I'd spent my entire life avoiding. Just seeing or smelling them would make me start to vomit. And this is how I learned to tackle those compulsions and make those foods a useful part of my life.

    My father, who experienced extreme anxiety and emetophobia, would have gotten so much out of this. I, too have emetophobia, but not in the same way as described. Sure, there are certain foods I don't like and won't eat but they don't make me nauseated or make me vomit. I am just afraid of vomiting. But I am even more afraid of other people vomiting (and my father also had that fear). It's not as big an issue as it used to be. Being on the other side of menopause (which just seemed to amp up anxiety in general), learning about my nervous system and how to regulate it, plus no longer shaming myself for my fears has made a difference. I used to think I had to get rid of the whole issue in order to be okay, and now I know that's not true.

    Hey Mark I just wanted to say thank you for addressing these issues and offering advice to people who are deeply struggling everyday with their compulsions. I’ve noticed my condition started when I was very young... my intrusive thoughts are harmful to myself and other people. I often see people getting hurt or doing something sadistic to hurt me. When I was a young toddler I started experiencing night terrors every single night and accumulated terrible insomnia even to this day. Could excessive night terrors and insomnia be an early symptom? I never hear anything or seen any research...I feel like I’m the only person who struggled with this issue. For a long time I always thought there was something super wrong with me. I thought because of the horrendous nightmares I was having as a child meant I was psychotic or defective...I say that because I didn’t understand the thoughts and images coming into my head. I couldn’t look away from them or stop them and it consumed me at a young age. The thoughts became a physical level for me that bothers me to this day. I have extreme anxiety because of it and from some trauma when I hit my teen years. I’ve been going to therapy for awhile but I don’t think my therapist sees the night terrors as essential to cover. I just wonder to this day my sanity because of how bad they were. Even though I haven’t had one in a year or two I still worry about these things coming back but it’s just as bad as the thoughts that interfere with my life on a daily. I love meditating but some days it’s just too much to handle. I’m drowning and scared to sleep, scared to feel, and often feel paranoid being stuck in my own body

    @@mrsereblaster4428 It'll help to expand the focus beyond emetophobia. Checking for reassurance if you can recover is an example of the type of compulsion that fuels emetophobia. If we're doing lots of checking for reassurance about bad things happening, it only teaches the brain to worry about more things that could happen. Instead of focusing on emetophobia, it could help to look more broadly at how you check and control around uncertainty and fear.

    @lane3-th9tf the video is about the skills to leave the emetophobia behind. Avoiding something because a drawing reminds you of vomit would be an example of the compulsions that fuel the problem. I definitely don't recommend the video if that's the approach you're taking.
