I haven't made a tribute video before but i had to for the most compelling villain to ever grace our screens. He is the reason that the shadowbringers MSQ is as great as it is.
If you guys like this, I'd love to make more about the other characters too!

Emet-Selch (Hades) is such a good Tragic Hero!! 1) Emet-Selch never once lied. He was very upfront and honest about everything from the beginning including who he is, about the Ascians and their goals and objectives, about Zodiark and Hydaelyn, and about Amaurot. He didn't necessarily go out of his way to try and deceive or hide things you (the player) or the Scions either. 2) If Emet-Selch's plan all along was to simply bring about the rejoining at all costs, then he should have killed the Scions while he had the chance to do so (and there were numerous chances). Especially while you (the player) were down and struggling w/ becoming/turning into a Light Warden after the downfall of Vauthry in The Crown of the Immaculate Trial. It would have made things easier for him and the Ascians. But he didn't. 3) Y'shtola (Master Matoya) would have been lost to the aetherial currents if it weren't for Emet-Selch. He went out of his way to rescue her after your scuffle with Ran’jit in the Rak’tika Greatwood. 4) The Exarch's end-game was to sacrifice himself by absorbing all the light from the Light Warden's in you (the player), thus saving you, but killing himself (Win/Lose). Emet-Selch actually spared the Exarch's life by interrupting his ritual. By capturing the Exarch, Emet-Selch gave you (the player) a reason to follow him and learn about Amaurot and the Ascians (the people/race). Hell, he even gave you (the player) special permissions in his recreated Amaurot. 5) Emet-Selch deeply loved and cared for his home, his people, and his friends. He recreated the original Amaurot in the ruins of Amaurot on The First in part to preserve the city and the people from his memories, but also to educate you (the player). As Emet-Selch has explained on numerous occasions, “The gulf between us is a reflection of the disparity between the world as it was and what it has become.” Emet-Selch and the Ascians DON’T hate anyone or view anyone as evil or wrong. They view their existence as the resulting mistakes between the battle of Hydaelyn and Zodiark that sundered The Source. They are, in Emet-Selch's eyes, incomplete beings who are hollow shadows of their former selves that or ignorant and blind to the truth. They are merely one small fragment or piece of the larger picture. “For we who have known perfection, the shattered source, and these shards are ghastly mockeries of the true world.” “The ephemeral lives you exalt are pale imitations.” - Emet-Selch. Alphinaud was incorrect in his assumption that Emet-Selch was lying or or was trying to insulting them with this information. 6) Emet-Selch had an inkling that you were also a fellow Ascian. And he already knew that you (the player) would eventually end up vanquishing him. However, he had to make sure that you were worthy to take up the mantle in his stead as the new stewards of the star. Thus, he went out of his way, expending a significant amount of aetherial energy, to create/reconstruct not only the city of Amaurot, but the dungeons Akadaemia Anyder and Amaurot, and the Trail The Dying Gasp. All of which was in order to test and educate you (the player) on the history and plight of his home and his people (After Emet-Selch is defeated in the Dying Gasp, the player finds themselves outside on a platform in the ruins of Amaurot (with his illusion/recreation completely dispelled). He knew that you (the player) were capable of significantly more than what you were struggling with and verbally told you numerous times how disappointed he was in you over such menial/trivial things. Which is why Emet-Selch kept pushing you repeatedly (like a father). He kept telling you how he had such high hopes for you and that he was disappointed in the current you (knowing what you COULD do and what you could become). He even hinted at it with the line: “your performance was underwhelming and I remain unconvinced of your worthiness.” This is confirmed during the Shadowbringer's quest and The Dying Gasp Trial when Emet-Selch see's a shard of another Hero/Ascian (Ardbert) rejoining with you (the player ...aka a piece of your former self). Emet-Selch says to the player after seeing and accepting that they are an Ascian and are capable and worthy of being stewards: "Remember…Remember us…" “Remember…that we once lived…” before he gives the player a somber smile as if to say: “Thank you,” and “Come now, don’t give me that look. Everything will be okay. The rest I leave to you,” before he died. 7) To Follow up the points above, Emet-Selch saved not only the Exarch's life, but yours (the players), the Scions, and many others. All the while, helping educate you, empower/strengthen you, and to help you regain a piece of our former self. He knew that by battling him in an all-out battle of Light vs Darkness, that the corrupted light aether in you would be expended and your aether would return to equilibrium.

I honestly think Emet Selch had other intentions other than the rejoining. Like you pointed out he had plenty of opportunities to cause a rejoining and wipe out the scions but never acted on those chances. Sure he was willing to wipe us out once we where unworthy but intill then all he did was test us. IT was almost as if he wanted us to kill him, to free him from his burden. IT could also be possible he didn't want the destruction of the calamities and saw we could potentially create a rejoining down the line without a calamity.. just a possibility.

I don't hate him either but I hate his methods. The person and the method are separate. Maybe he tried to bring Amaurot back through peaceful means but, having failed in doing so, he resorted to violence, death and genocide. No matter how noble his intentions may be, he's still willing to sacrifice ALL mortal life to bring back fewer. He's weighing the importance of one life versus another. Emet-Selch is perhaps a relatable antagonist but he's not good. He's not right. Maybe the fact that he started to help the Scions reveals that he, himself, was already starting to recognize his actions are morally unforgivable, but giving up is out of the question, so his only hope is that the Warrior of Light stops him.

The one thing FF14 does so very well is to show that wars are not fought by one "good" side, and one "Evil" side, but rather by opposing viewpoints that cannot coexist. Emet-Selch wasn't evil, but his viewpoint was directly opposed to ours. Hating the villain is an easy story to write, but writing a villain you sympathize with, yet still want to defeat, is amazing storytelling.

"*Remember... Remember us... Remember that we once lived...*" I absolutely welled up after he said that. All he want was his world restored and his friends back. Now that that is out of the equation, all he could do is to tell us to remember them, that they existed, that they weren't just some myth dreamt up by some loon, he asked us to remember his history and his people and pass it on to the next generation. Emet-selch, truly a wonderful character and a very depressing one.

Okay, so some really cool facts about Emet-Selch: 1) The name Emet-Selch is composed of two root words in Hebrew. In Hebrew, words and phrases are developed by modifying or changing root words, which means everything can be boiled down to an original root word. Both "Emet" and "Selch" are root words, meaning that they are the originals (much like Emet-Selch is an original from before the fragmentation of the world). 2) You learn that Emet-Selch is his title, with his real name being Hades. If you look at the literal translation of his title from Hebrew, it comes out as "To Forgive the Truth". In Hebrew, the word "Emet" is composed of 3 letters from that alphabet (which has 28 letters). It is composed of the first letter of the alphabet, the middle letter, and the final letter. If you erase the first letter, the word then spells the Hebrew word for "Death". This is also important because not ONLY does it match with his real name being Hades, but it would also change his name from "Emet-Selch" to "Met-Selch", which would roughly be something like "To Forgive Death". 3) You probably won't recognize the man behind the voice for Emet-Selch, René Zagger. Unless you are a fan of "The Bill" (kind of like a British version of Law & Order) from the time period of 1999 to 2004, when René Zagger played a fairly important role. Otherwise he's had some success in a variety of different roles on British TV over the years. Most importantly for FF14, in 2004 René Zagger left "The Bill" and joined the Stafford Festival's production of "The Comedy of Errors", a play by Shakespeare. "The Comedy of Errors" is more slapstick humor than anything impressive like "Hamlet" or "Macbeth", so it generally isn't as important as his other plays. He went back and joined another production of the play in 2011 or 2012. 4) The reason that "The Comedy of Errors" is important for FF14 is that it shares an important connection to another Shakespeare play that ALSO shows up in FF14: "The Tempest". See, back in the 1500's an Italian critic began promoting this concept of the "Classical Unities" because he misread a translation of something from Aristotle. The concept of the "Classical Unities" is that any fiction that is a dramatic tragedy needs to have one principal action, the action should take place in a time period no longer than 24 hours, and it should exist in a single place. Basically, the Ascians are obsessed with unity. Emet-Selch's decision to recreate Amaurot as it was right before they summoned Zodiark would also fulfill the criteria for the "Classical Unities".

@@saundyuk that's A narrow view of it all. If left as is, the rejoining will happen anyway. Beast tribes have been evoking primals, and that will still tip the balance. What we have after the split is a bandaid on a chest gash. It's not a permanent fix, is a half arsed attempt at stalling the inevitable. Mind you, thanks to the war between the two Ascian factions, we're stuck with a slowly deteriorating star instead of an immediately imploding one. Every life in all 14 fragments is a reflection of one whole, complete life, pre sundering. In short, meet was fully correct in his assessment of the world's current condition and state. With or without the remnant Ascian interference, you would see genocide. The Issue here is that I genuinely believe Emet was also trying to break his tempering, and the only way to do that, was to overpower the WoD/WoL with massive amounts of light based aether; which made us a pure bullet of light; and turn that gun on himself. He literally orchestrated his own suicide to stop himself, and openly informed you as much as he could about everything going on before he died.

@@saundyuk The problem is that Emet's race are so peaceful and selfless, they literally volunteered to kill half their numbers and then were going to do so half again, without apparently a second thought for the benefit of the other half that would survive. Imagine going from living in that reality to one where these remnants are selfish, greedy people who kill each other for the most moronic of reasons. Emet himself didn't even immediately go on a genocide mission, he actively tried to integrate and get over it, for what he described as thousands of thousands of lifetimes, living amongst these remnants as one of then again and again. The ghosts in Amaurot even mention that Emet was putting the burden of everything on himself even before the Calamity that destroyed their homes. Can't agree with what he wants to do, but it's certainly understandable how he's gotten himself to this point and why he would do such a thing.

Emet-Selch is such a good written character. In just one expansion he gets an amazing character development. For a sec I actually sided with him. He's one of those grey antagonists where he's done so many wrongs but at the same time all of his actions have a valid reason. Caius Ballad from XIII-2 was a similar case. Emet-Selch has become one of my favorite ff villains if not my favorite. An absolutely amazing character that I'm definitely gonna miss. I will always remember you Hades. It broke my heart to have to kill Emet-Selch. I was hoping up to the very end that there would be some way we could reconcile our differences and come to some kind of agreement. But as soon as he started asking "What would it all have been for?" when considering giving up, I knew there was no going back ;....; Emet had done terrible things, but I never felt like he was truly evil. Fate dealt him a hard hand, and despite his good intentions, he didn't handle it well. It's a tragic example of how loss and grief can twist a person. I have a feeling that what we learn about him going forward (including what his relationship was with the WoL during the days of Amaurot) is just going to make his story even more tragic and make me feel even worse about killing him.

At its core Shadowbringers is a story about grief, loss, and the measure of a person's soul in its darkest hour. Emet-Selch is a hero who failed and who has spent eons in the shadow of that failure, trying to correct his mistake in the way he thought would be best. In a way he's the mirror held up to the Warrior of Light's face, and a really good example of what happens when someone's despair and grief twists good intentions into something monstrous. I'll miss him. Far more compelling villain than Stabbyweeb McGoodhair has been so far tbh.

Emet Selch is simply geniusly written and so developed by the end of the expansion. He is the epitome of a morally grey 'enemy' that in but a few decisions would be a stalwart ally or damndest enemy. All he did was for sympathetic reasons that us as the player can resonate with. He makes us truly think of what lengths would we go to. We do not know for how long he fought the good fight like us the players of FF14 have before he turned into the darkened form and twisted thoughts that he holds.

It's like he was passing the torch. After thousands of years it was time for him to move on, as he was loosing the desire and focus to heal the world. So he gave us all his knowledge, tested us, and when satified, left the world in our hands to finish the healing. I think he knew of his mistakes, and that since there were only a few ascians that they didnt have the strength of numbers to finish the task. That fresh eyes, of many others could find a way to finish the job, and maybe, just maybe bring him and the others back. I would love to see a day when we finish the healing bring them all back. Maybe it would be the final x-pac, maybe it would be the first x-pac in which we explore the unbroken source as it was. All I know is after this epicness I can not return to a plain old alliance vs empire storyline.

*SPOILERS FOR 5.3* So many lines from him become more clear after knowing Elidibus’ story. “Remember that we once lived”. He says this not just because he’s dying, but because in reality he was the last living being that remembered Amaurot, as he knew Elidibus had forgotten it a long time ago. “My world will have no need of heroes”. At first it could be interpreted as he mocking us, but it can also be him referring to Elidibus; he saw the young Eli and his journey of commitment, accepting being a sacrificial lamb, and how even after death he decided he still could help the Convocation, that his work still wasn’t done, and remade himself. In the tales of the shadow about him he remembers the original cheerful Elidibus that looked up to them so much that he was almost embarrassed about it. He now sees the current Elidibus devoid of all that joy and emotion, knowing that now he’s just a man pretty much programmed to work selflessly for all eternity to restore the world, even if now he no longer remembers why.

Based off what we've been told by Emet, he and the player being tempered by Zodiark & Hydaelyn has to lead our understanding of both of their actions. With both Eikons being fundamentally opposed to one another, means that despite our desires neither of us can truly come to clear decision of cooperation regardless of any interests or desires to do so. I'd like to believe that freed from their manipulation we truly could've come to work together and avoided the whole conflict coming to a head. In light of that the actual ending feels much more tragic and hopeless. As an aside, I also think that Hydaelyn's influence over us gives credit to the player never truly having a choice in turning down requests (quests) from even the most ridiculous of NPCs.

ShB is as much Emet's story as it is Arbert's and Graha/Exarch's. Emet is so central to the whole Shb story and the only reason you and everyone else survived the whole ShB experience! Without him. Y'shtola would be dead (and you would not even realize that Elidibus is a Primal), The Crystal Exarch would be dead after absorbing all you Aether, the Scion will get sent home but may or may not make it in one piece, you will have no help in reaching the Crystal Tower since the Scion/Exarch will be gone, without the Azem crystals, you have no chance of defeating Elidibus, even if you somehow managed to defeat him, you can't bind him since you have no control over the tower and there will not be a memory crystal to transfer the Exarch's memories to the younger G'raha. Tell me how can someone who have done all that does not have a perfect exit strategy all ready for his final curtain call, with the encore being snapping you out of the void in SOS and basically telling you that he's handing you the future but he's still there if you stray from the path. I'm not saying Emet Selch is a saint. I'm sure he was a "evil" Ascian all set on continuing his work for the rejoining upon his return. What I'm saying is that once he meet us and saw that we have a fragment of Azem's soul and have another fragment walking beside us. He was finally open to the idea that we might be a worthy successor to their legacy and an alternative to the rejoining. He then proceed to test our worthiness all through ShB which resulted in us possessing 2 fragments of Azem's soul and the official holder of Azem's office as part of the 14. While Emet probably doesn't see all but he's basically a god compare to us with his thousands of thousands of years of experience among us, establishing the Allagan Empire and all his experience as a member of the convocation of 14. Just look at his body posture in ShB until the end of 5.0 when you "defeated" him.

Emet-Selch's character made me cry so hard. I know he did multiple genacides and he had to die, but fully understanding his motives made me wish so badly that there could have been another way. Imagining him lonely for so many millenia is heartbreaking. Best villian ever written, in my opinion. On a lighter note, it makes me laugh sometimes when I think about what he might say about our fight to the death with his dear great grandson after the Endsinger fight. I wonder what Hythodaeus would also say 😄

We are all agree that Emet-Selch is the best "villain" in this game so far and even one of the best in the final fantasy and the videogames in general. Nice video love it.
