Emerson SmartSet Alarm Clock Unboxing & Review

Ғылым және технология

For whatever reason it seems very hard to find a traditional style alarm clock that keeps good time and isn't a piece of junk so I was very satisfied to find this affordable, feature-rich alarm clock at my local Walmart as a stylish replacement for my old alarm clock.

I have one of these, but mine is the CKS1521 model. I was very impressed with this alarm clock from Emerson that was only $20 at Walmart. I had several alarm clocks before this that kept losing time, but this one was spot on right after plugging it in. Time is just a few seconds ahead of my phone and laptop, but I'm fine with that. The soft yellow/amber light is nice with different brightness settings and can auto-adjust the light levels in the room. I just leave it on full brightness since it sits across the room on my entertainment center. It was easy to figure out and I only had to reference the instructions twice. Also nice that the instructions weren't in 5 different languages, so I could find the information I was looking for quickly and easily. I only have one question that I was hoping to answer: How does this Smart Set function work? I have another clock with an auto-set feature that communicates with a time source, but it takes a while to get a signal and sync the time. This clock from Emerson is instant like in the video. I've read that some clocks can scan for FM signals to get the date/time from a local radio station. Some use short wave radio to get a station for date and time. I use to know the frequency back when I had a SW radio and messed around with it.

I'm not sure if it uses a radio signal or is an atomic clock. I've noticed that mine always ends up running a minute or so fast even if I manually sync it to an accurate clock. However coming in/out of daylight savings time it will change to the correct hour on its own within a day or 2. I have an atomic clock that stays more accurate (probably within 30 seconds per 6 months or so) however I don't think it ever automatically changed the hours accordingly for DST so maybe the Emerson does use radio frequency to get the time on its own.

@m Mike to set Alarm, for example, you will hold the AL 1 button located on the right. To change the alarm time, while your finger is stilling holding down on the AL 1 button, use the tune buttons located next to the AL 1 button to go up or down. I did my best to try to explain :/

Funny! I have one of these but it has a red display. The red display will not interfere with sleep like blue and other colours so I prefer mine. It also has Bluetooth like this one I am sure so you can play your music remotely from any Bluetooth source. It is an acceptable clock radio but it so light that just pulling my phone while it is plugged in to charge can sometimes make the radio fall on the floor. I am used to radios with some weight. It is very difficult to learn to operate and I would have to go back to the manual to look up how to use some features. It is not user friendly imo. The volume is annoying being a push button. A rotary dial would make a lot more sense. I have had mine for a year and it has been dependable but I preferred my old Emerson clock radio that had a regular ac plug and had some weight to it, would set itself, and display the time on the ceiling. I still have it but I melted the controls using a product like WD-40 in an attempt to make the buttons work a little smoother. I wish that they would continue to make that clock radio. It was far superior. This one works but it isn’t the best.

Although I bought this clock at Walmart I did find a listing on Amazon which also has a slightly different model available as well. www.amazon.com/Emerson-CKS1708-Smart-Radio-Alarm/dp/B00F6T4466/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1492556651&sr=8-1&keywords=emerson+smartset+alarm+clock

Mr Everything I found them available on line at Walmart. They wanted something like $175 Canadian so I bought in on Amazon or somewhere else for about $75 or so. Wallmart.ca was disgusting with their Canadian prices.

I was given an Emerson SmartSet CKS1500 clock radio a few months ago, very similar in size and function to the one being reviewed in this video, but the radio receiver is absolute trash, both on the AM and FM bands. It barely receives KGO 910 AM, about 70 miles away, a "blowtorch" clear-channel station that can be heard on the west coast of the United States from the Mexican border to the Oregon-Washington border with an average tabletop radio under good propagation conditions. The FM band is completely dead on this unit. Unless one lives in a metropolitan area with radio transmitters within 10-20 miles, this clock "radio" is useless. Don't waste your money.
