A threat is usually just telling you GET INSIDE! depending on the type of siren they sound different. Between a Whelen 4008 and a thunderb bolt 1000. The tones depend on the command box, the type of siren, and what the city wants

Plus whenever the volunteer fire department needs an ambulance or a firetruck it goes off. Interesting use for the high-low tone. Around here I think the only one used is just the regular siren, and many sirens lack the capability to do the high-low tone since it wasn't used much. Most sirens can only do alert and attack modes. AFAIK, the original meaning of the high-low tone has been lost to history. I've also been witness to a test in attack mode, which is concerning when you actually know what attack mode is and means.

where i live there's lots of floods and our mayor hasn't installed any siren to warn us (we get notified by amber alerts) also a story: back in early 2017 there were rumors a tornado hit south of my town. i thought it was fake but on a night ( i had to sleep in my parents' room since my dad's cousin lives with us) I heard an amber alert and it was actually a severe weather warning

to clear things up single tone doesnt mean anything, some sirens are dual tone (Federal Signal Thunderbolt 1000T for example) and some are single tone (Whelen WPS 4004). but the actual difference is the signal. a steady sound dual tone or single is Alert which is basically saying there is a storm watch. the wailing signal is called attack. This means that there is a tornado or servere storm and you need to shelter NOW. there is also a Hi Lo signal were a dual tone siren is switching between the tones. im not completely sure what it means but probably a fire signal or other storm thing. alternate wail is the same as Hi Lo but with the attack signal. it basically switches between the hi tone and lo tone while also in a wailing signal. Pulse and pulse wail are pulse tones (single tone or dual depending on the siren) and pulse wail is just pulse + Attack. i dont know what they mean but its nearly universal. also there are different types of sirens but thats another topic. also some county emergency offices sometimes dont use the signals for their listed purpose. and sometimes only use one. it really depends on what state and county and what they wanna do and what they know about sirens and what not

Went to basic training at Fort Leonard Wood, MO... I can never unhear the fucking doorbell siren they use for general alerts on that base. Somewhat better than the high-ass monotone G# wail they use for weather alerts that bores into your skull, but there's still something kinda profane about THE doorbell sound, the one that is also used in a lot of clock towers, being used as an alert tone for everything that's NOT a weather alert...
