Emergency Radiator Hose Repair -EricTheCarGuy

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

While shooting another video the upper radiator hose sprung a leak in the Fairmont. Not wanting to buy a new hose, I did a quick repair. Even thought this happened at the shop (lucky me), I feel you could do this on the side of the road or in a parking lot if you had to. In fact, about a week later this happened in a parking lot and I did the same fix with the Leatherman I keep in my glovebox. You are correct that replacing the hose would be a more permanent fix, but as I pointed out in the video, I'm going to be replacing the engine anyway and at that time I'll install new hoses. You can also do this repair with heater hoses or other cooling hoses if you have enough hose to work with. One thing to note, you might want to inspect your radiator hoses periodically for softness or dry rot. It can prevent an incident like this from happening in the first place. Lastly, if you have oil leaking onto a hose like I did, it's a good idea to fix the oil leak to prevent further damage to the hose.

As a teen, I was broke down on the side of a dirt road with a busted radiator hose. A old man stopped to help, and he used two hose clamps and a piece of metal from a beer can to patch it. It got me home that day and I've carried a couple of hose clamps in my car ever since.

Eric, to first state, I'm not critiquing your water vs antifreeze choice lol. water actually cools better then antifreeze. However I did get a little worried when you added cool water to the radiator going into a hot engine.. from experience, I've seen a guy add water to a hot engine and when he started it the block went from 210 degrees to the cool water and cracked and destroyed the engine.. warm water is preferred to avoid that. in conclusion, great video man keep them coming!

Great tip Eric! I had once had a car with a "leaky" head gasket and I was stuck on a road trip. I drove several hundred miles by stopping at McDonald's every 20-30 minutes and refilling cooling system with water for McDs! Made it home, did the head gasket job, car is still running!

Whenever I got a coolant hose leak I find that the simplest cheapest and easiest way to permanently fix it without having to spend sometimes even a $100 for new hose assemblies, is instead a 5 dollar fix: welcome to a simple hose coupling. It costs about 5 bucks and comes with two clamps and u can get one for about any size. What I do is simply cut the hose in half with a razor where the leak is, insert the coupling between the cut, clamp em back up and there ya have it , good as new, no tape, no worrying about it coming off because this is exactly the method the factory uses at the end of the hose, you're just doing it in middle. Good luck! Was surprised not to see anyone on KZread mention this 🤔 Ps: if ur stuck on the side of the road the easiest way to get back home would be taping up the leak with whatever tape u can get ur hands on (many rounds, use the whole roll if yall have to!) and if u have no tape just wrap a towel or cloth as tight as u can and then just loosen the coolant cap enough for some air to get out so u release the pressure on that tape or cloth. Then fill up reservoir with water if u have no coolant. (Make sure u don't leave that water in during the winter as it'll freeze up)

If you notice how loose the hose is going back on to the water pump even after the end was trimmed back, this house would still need to be replaced. Clearly Eric has different plans for this car but the average viewer with this problem should pay attention to that factor and replace the hose soon. Thanks for the video!

This happened to me this morning an hour away from my home. Forgot cell phone cause I was rushing to get out the door, and also forgot a daily carry backpack with some stuff that would have really helped out. Also 2 days prior I replaced a different coolant hose. The one that popped this time had a 3-4 mm hole in the middle of the top radiator hose. Made it to a kwik trip and got the cheapest duct tape you can imagine and 4 gallons of water. I had some 3 strand tarred bankline in the car also. The hose was hot so while the car was sitting the hose steam dried. Wrapped around the full length of the hose 5 or 6 times then about an inch on both sides of the hole I put one strand of the 3 strand bankline and tied a canadian zip tie knot and tightened it as tight as it could go and then did another 5 or 6 wraps of duct tape around it. And me and the old girl made it an hour and 15 min home ! Couldnt believe it. I think the fact the duct tape was the cheapest possible actually helped me out because it was kind of stretchy and more pliable than good duct tape. I just put it on as tight as I could and she held on. I dont think name brand duct tape or gorilla tape I have in my daily carry bag (that I forgot to bring also) would have stretched and followed the contours of the curved hose that well. Also mine was dead in the middle of the hose.

Some high temp mastic tape is also a life saver if you end up with a rupture say in the middle of the hose. Apply it with plenty of tension and it holds up seemingly forever. That said, replacing it with a proper new hose is most ideal but if you can't get one in a timely manner this is amazing stuff for the job!

one time out in the middle of nowhere (Buckeye, AZ) my capri 5.0L started to leak coolant out of the small elbow hose on top of the water pump that goes into the left side of the motor. Without any other options...I waited until it cooled, shortened up one of the hoses to the heater core, and used the piece as the new elbow. Of course, it kinked, and it was tough to make it curve into that tiny space, but it worked and got me to my destination :)

Eric, for an electrical and electronic related video, a back up camera system install would make good material. It would give you an opportunity to use your soldering tools, haha.

I like ETCG this topic is one of the most that has happened to me I cross the us border and it happened as Eric I cut the hose and fix, there's mighty tape as they said on those info mighty tape does not work very well,90% of car broke down is on the road so I like to be prepared, with extra hoses, tape, wires, clamps, water!basic tools!some flares!if you got roadside assistance good but it dosent hurt to have xtra spare parts even a fellow driver need a help. So xtra, hoses or universal, belts, cables, oils, water.even water detergent spray for when it rains spray inside the rotor, spark plug cables, alternator with caution.silicon spray too.

A thought just crossed my mind. When you replace the engine--presumably with a V8--is that radiator going to be able to cool it sufficiently, or will the radiator have to be replaced, also?

I would assume he'd replace the radiator with an appropriate one for whatever engine he decides to put in there... The current radiator definitely isn't designed for a V8.

LMacNeill Given his plans, I doubt much of anything will be stock under the hood...

Also, don't even bother trying to use that tape they have to patch coolant hoses. It usually comes with those emergency kits, with cheap jumper cables etc.

This would have been usefull a few days ago when my Huyndai(3.0 V6) started boiling on my way to the ER. End result, a blown headgasket and bent valves. Water leak busted my fan, had to hotwire it directly on the battery so it would run, almost didn't make it home, engine knocks and runs like shit now. Could also be that the fan broke, hence the boiling.
