"Emergency, Emergency, Emergency" Amtrak Cascades 513

www.yardlimit.com
Just south of Everett, Washington is the small town of Mukilteo. There’s a commuter station for the Sounder, but Amtrak doesn’t stop there. It’s also a quiet uncrowded place to video trains, especially on the weekend. This morning I stopped there, hoping to catch some freight activity, but the Amtrak Cascades 513 was running 45 minutes late so I knew I could catch that also. I noted on the Amtrak App that it had departed Everett so I knew it would arrive shortly. Instead of an arriving train, I heard “Emergency, Emergency, Emergency” on the scanner.
Fortunately this was a close call, but it delayed an already late train. Following the Cascades was BNSF 6664 pulling a short intermodal train down to the docks in Seattle.
Thanks for watching!

By definition it's a radio scanner. I think what you want to ask is if it can scan other frequencies. Yes. You can program in the frequencies you want to scan. It will also pick up transmissions that are 'close'. I have a number of railroad frequencies programmed in, in addition to local EMS frequencies. You can hold it on a frequencies so it doesn't scan. That way you won't miss part of a transmission you're particularly interested in. I lock mine on the NMRX dispatcher frequency because that's closest to where I live now and the most relevant to my railfanning. I also find that scanning EMS frequencies is often depressing.

+PRESTIGER33 I understand. The problem occurs when something like this happens; someone is drunk and they almost get hit. In New Mexico where I live sometimes, a kid was walking home from school down the tracks because it was the quickest way home. He had his headphones on and never heard the Amtrak coming up behind him. Of course there are people that commit suicide by train which happened in Edmonds, WA last week. They obviously don't care if they are trespassing, but they also have no idea the trauma it causes the crew that hits them. I heard that on the radio once and it was hard to listen to. Thanks for watching!

  • @chris.smitty33

+Yard Limit Right being drunk is more rare compared to suicide. A few days ago 2 people were killed by an acela between branford CT and guilford CT. Im sure it was suicide as they did not state the reason. Then about a month and a half ago some guy at Mansfield station ma committed suicide and the whole station got closed and had to be completely cleaned. You can guess why. It was 125mph regional train. The headphones thing is just a another big story. That is just complete ignorance and stupidity. I actually know when trains run in my area. Ive got my scanner out to listen to dispatch and everything. Plus i usually do it with a friend of mine thats very knowledgeable about the railroad. Anyway though nice talking :)
