Embracing HIGH DYNAMIC RANGE for Epic Sunrise Shots

Sunrise is probably my favourite time of day for landscape photography but it's also one of the most difficult to get right due to the unpredictability, brief shooting windows and high dynamic range that almost always accompany it. In this video I show you my approach to dealing with some of these challenges and how you can weild high dynamic range, shooting directly into the rising sun to create dramatic and unique looking images. If you have any thoughts on the image I captured or have your own methods for shooting situations like these please pop them down below in the comments. Thanks very much for watching and don't forget to subscribe if you are new round here. Cheers :-)

    Great video and a cracking image James, I like how you pre planned it in your head and talked us through your thought process. Autumnal colours, bring it on! Cheers. PS bracketing in these types of situations really is worthwhile and can save headaches when it comes to editing, even if with mirrorless we can see the image in the camera !

    Nice work James. Here's a tip to keep your boots dry from the dew. In the US, I use a product called Snow Seal. It goes on as a heavy wax and rubs into the leather and stitching (with your fingers) and in a few hours dries and hardens and water proofs the leather. Great stuff for leather hiking boots and dry feet. I have used it for years.

    Another great video, James, and thanks as always for such great content. The image is superb, and the sun star is amazing. I totally agree re the remote shutter release.I find myself using it for all my astro stuff, and increasingly for my daylight landscape stuff, too. If you're trying to capture a moment, that delay can be the ruin of a potentially great shot!!

    Hi James, great image. Would have loved to see the post processing. Totally agree with shutter releases as opposed to shutter delay. When you are trying to nail the timing(sunrise, sunset,seascapes,etc) the shutter delay just doesn't help.

  • @JamesBrewphoto

    Videos filmed out on location (in nature) are the best ones :) The sunstars of the Nikon 14-30 look better than the stars of my Fuji 10-24 ... Yesterday I was waiting for the sunstars at sunset but a cloud destroyed the vision I had in my mind.

    Thats a cracking image, i suppose thats the advantage with a full frame camera, the dynamic range helps enormously to get that superb shot, which you certainly got, the detail and colour in the derelict buildings was beautiful, a true masterclass in how to achieve a great image, and if people cannot learn from your expertise the they will be advised to take up a new hobby like train spotting, Ha- Ha, regards, Colin.

  • @JamesBrewphoto

    @JamesBrewphoto

    Thanks Colin! Very kind of you to say. The dynamic range on the Z7 definitely helps with shots like this but with good bracketing there's no reason why a crop sensor couldn't deliver the same...maybe just more images and more processing. To make life simple with high dynamic scenes, this is why I stick with FF 👍

    Quality post, super image, good choice of music, James. Worth the “stupid o clock” rise and midges. Your familiarity with the venue and mind’s eye preview put all the elements together (save for the lack of boots😁). Some folks would add starburst in post as special effect, but not sure results would show authenticating lens flare. Good point about reliable cable release. Ever try the alternative of smartphone-based remote app? Cheers.

  • @JamesBrewphoto

    @JamesBrewphoto

    Thanks Paul! I actually intend to return in around a weeks time to shoot the same image again (weather permitting) but from a different angle with the sun more over the centre of the scene. I feel there is still potential to unlock at that scene. It's a location I visit all the time and know extremely well. Add starburst in post...never! You will know by now that is absolutely not me at all 😂 I have tried snapbridge to control the camera but frankly it's not seamless and reliable enough. I prefer my £5 cable release 👌

    Wonderful shot James! I prefer this compared to your previous one in the same location, you managed the blend in post in perfect way! Just a question: which kind of exposure measuring did you use for the shot of the sun? Matrix?

  • @JamesBrewphoto

    @JamesBrewphoto

    3 жыл бұрын

    Thanks Gabriele. I just kept the camera in matrix - for landscape shooting its very rare I move away from it to be honest. The nikon tends to shift the balance in the matrix exposure towards the focus point which in circumstances like this gives a degree of weighting to what's important 👍
