Thanks for joining me today! I hope you don't mind the glimpse of my space... and joining me as I get through the items that will find new homes. What areas of your home are like this??

The better question is "what areas of your home aren't like this?" Lol Just kidding 🙂 To be honest, though, my apartment sounds more like your description of your garage. I have a lot of things that are essentially shoved in my closet, under sinks, and under the bed that I need to go through. Getting the energy from somewhere is a huge struggle... especially in the winter. I know I'll feel a lot better once I can go through everything, sort it out, donate things that have piled up, etc. But it's sometimes it gets too overwhelming, and I just give up for a day or so then I try again. All this reminds me of the question, "How do you eat an elephant?" And of course the answer is "one bite at a time." My "bites" are more like chunks that I need to break down into smaller pieces (tasks).

I inherited my moms 4000 sq foot home and good lord, she passed in 2017 and im almost at the end of going through things and finishing the process. I have the small attic over the garages and one bedroom which is packed to the nines. I am finally at a place where emotion is no longer involved and i will be parting with things that dont serve me. After years of crafting in a corner of my bedroom, Im finally gonna move into one of the spare bedrooms and set up my craft room. Its gonna be a fun spring.

Here’s a suggestion for items that are sentimental, but running out of space. Take full pictures (all views) THEN decide if the items can be donated, etc. This will give you the opportunity to still be able to look at them, but give yourself room. You will also be giving yourself the opportunity to write down a description and a memory and keep them together in a book or in yr computer. I’ve done this with some of my precious memories (I have 7 grandchildren) and I only kept the things that really are my heart sing.

I found you again a few weeks back and was so confused when you said husband, smaller space, not garage. Etc. I'm so glad I watched this video. It caught me up, kind of. Congratulations on the marriage. I'm so glad to follow you again. Thank you for your inspiration.

Hello Norrine, 9:25 I have a suggestion for your husband's childhood things why not just take a picture of him with each of the items put them on a flash drive or make a scrapbook of all his memories he can write a short story about it " on my 10th birthday I got my first catchers met in 1972" and he can go see it anytime he feels nostalgic and it will be there forever. A fun project to do for him and he can use all the supplies you have already. We use what we have and use what you got. Then maybe he can keep half of the most sentimental things to him and sell other items on eBay too. We can probably spread out the furniture throughout the house for Moms favorite things the more we do that the more open space u both will have. And you will have that little closet and maximize the space for your things. I can see a door hanger with hooks for the inside or out to put things as well. I don't know how he will feel about it. Hopefully you can sweet talk him with persuasion. This is what I'm going to do like for my clothes before I get rid of them due to out of style or they don't fit or simply haven't worn in while and I need a new wardrobe. I will take a picture while wearing a piece of my favorites then save to my SD card n boom. And then donate those clothes to safe nest a local charity that helps women of domestic abuse. then I'll go shopping for something new for my extra space closet n it's a very small one compared to my old apts walk in closet. Things do change in life non is permanent so we compromise and improvise. Btw I did clear out a space of clutter of my bedroom and it just felt so good and it was right before I went to bed. LOL😂. I celebrated🎉 too. Like u say take baby steps I really enjoy all your ideas and videos Let us know how it works out. ❤❤❤

Your honesty and sharing your process, including the questions, is so welcome! Everyone’s situation different, letting go is harder for some than others. A suggestion a professional organizer gave me (over the phone) that has helped me the most with sentimental items we suddenly see after they’ve been out of sight for a long time, and that hit us right in the “feels,” was to put the item where we see it and walk by it multiple times a day. It will lose some of its charge and then we can make a more clear headed decision about what to do with it. So the letters from my first love waaay back when, the little stuffed cat that my mother had in her last days, the two small statues that she loved, and so on, were put where I saw them every day, just a few at a time, and after a while they didn’t make my heart clutch or eyes tear so much. Then I was free to think and decide. But when they first came out of a box that hadn’t been opened in years, they carried far too big an emotional charge for me to make decisions on the spot. And they kept their power if they were put back in the box. They needed air; I needed to see them and breathe more easily. Hang in there!

I'm in a similar situation. My husband moved in with my MIL a year ago when her health declined so much she could no longer live alone. I started to gradually move in by April, she died in May, and I fully moved most of our household items in by July. We have been decluttering and redecorating since then. We have totally different taste in decor and crafting! I was thrilled to have a room of my own for crafting, but it contains her old craft stuff and surplus furniture. I keep the door shut so I don't have to see it. I'm overwhelmed every time I go in there! My husband is no help because it bothers him to see her things. I am frustrated and annoyed, but I'm not pushing it because I understand he's still grieving.

I’m so sorry for the loss of your loved one I have never done a KZread video but would like to make one on cleaning out a loved one’s home while grieving. My parents were married for 63 years. Mother grew up as an Alabama share cropper & often didn’t have shoes. So when she married her Hunka husband Daddy in Ohio who in her mind was rich she started to buy all the things she ever wanted. Flash forward to her passing suddenly in 2019 then Daddy following in 2021 I was left with caring for daddy until he passed as well as cleaning the house that was floor to ceiling in every room. The 1st task was making it safe for daddy to get around. He only had a path for so long. Then we had to delay her memorial for a month because we had family coming from around the country & the house was embarrassing. So we did what we could & thankfully they had a great room addition so even though it was still visible by all the company at least we could host a needed time for the family to gather. There was no help on KZread for this situation so I just figured it out. Needing to shove down my own grief & handle all the financial surprises was a lot but it can be done Anyhow all this is to say I get it. My suggestion is to put all like things together then pair down to what really means something & relocate the rest. Yes for your husbands childhood memorabilia have him display it around the house the memories when he sees it will be comforting. I have taken any childhood toys that I loved & combined them with my husband’s toys & children’s toys then packed them with Christmas decor. Every year my husband sets up this adorable display with a decorated tree with all our & our children’s childhood ornaments. We basically take a small portion of or house & it becomes a toy land. All our company oohs & ahhs over the things that take them back to their own childhood memories. It’s a great way to celebrate the past each holiday season. Thank you for so many of your great tips I have used many. Hang in there you’re doing great & your new space will no doubt look fabulous when finished!

He’s considers it HIS room and comes in every time I start to organize. ‘What are you doing, mom? Don’t be messing with my stuff!‘ ‘His stuff’ is a large doggie crate with a big dog bed in it under one of my crafting tables, so there’s nothing to mess with!! Also, we just moved my in-laws into an assisted living facility, but many things have been moved into our house for my husband and his siblings to go through. Would love to 'meet' your husband! You are so happy and you positively are glowing! The hardest thing is to 'get rid' of memories. One solution is to take a picture of it, and scrap it. Make him a scrapbook of his cherished memories. One think I am learning, as I navigate getting older and wiser (Gen X here) - is it is just stuff. When the time comes, which I hope is not for a long long time, I don't want my family to have to deal with stuff. Well - except my craft stuff! haha. I actually did purge ALOT of craft items when we moved 2 hours away into a new house. That being said, it's been a year and I still have boxes in the garage, a full craft room in one of the bedrooms, and still no place to put things. Oh Norrine, I would LOVE to have you as a neighbor!

I’m having to take a lot of my craft items out of my studio to make space for a wall easel to paint on. I’ve temporarily decided to put away my decor to keep a few extra bits in my room. My plan is to set up a maker space in my dining room. I’m currently redecorating and waiting for hubby to clear out his stuff from the dining room. He works away a lot and I can’t control how long it will take but I can box up my decor/unnecessary stuff for now. I hope you get your room sorted soon as clutter can really effect your creative mojo.

I know what your husband is feeling. I’m the same way. I moved from a 3 bedroom house with garage to a one bedroom apt. I had to get rid of a lot of things that I didn’t want to bc they were precious to me. What I decided to do is take a picture of all my treasures and picked one out of 10 to keep and then went though everything again and got rid of more until it became manageable. I still have pictures of everything so I can look at them and still reminisce. I sold a lot of it and was able to have money in the bank to spend on new things that I need now. It’s a win win win. I hope this helps your husband to let go of some things. I feel like I accomplished something as well when I saw space around me. Thank you for sharing. 💝🥰🤗

When his parents died, they had an entire house that had saved everything for over 45 years. I am still working on downsizing our house because he brought so much of his parents' stuff here. I want a quick solution, but it's just 1 box at a time

Memory items are so difficult to deal with! Thanks so much for sharing! Question-can you modify the dresser across from you? Paint it white, maybe update the drawer handles, and use it for much needed storage. Use more tension rods on the right side of it, or create a “hutch-style” storage system around/in-front-of the mirror, or slide the mirror back behind it and build or thrift a shelving unit to sit on it. Seems there are a ton of storage possibilities with that dresser! You could make that an entire video! Bless you with your storage plight!

Well Miss Norrine aka The Crafty Organizer..... I think you are doing really good. It is hard when you are invading someone else's space and now they also have to make room for you in THEIR space. When the day comes that life settles down some and you guys do buy another house together.... you will know what you have, what you need and you will find a place that can take all that in. I love your question..."What areas of your home are like this??" Ahhh, my, uh, my, and my, well my..... All of it!!! Well just about. Here is my problem, I never know what room to hit first, I never know where to start and once I do start by the time I am another room or two away... that first one seems to be the catch all and is back to where it was. I don't collect alot but I do collect coca cola. I am addicted to the writing of Coca Cola. So my kids for years cop out at birthday, mothers day and christmas and buy me something cheap coca cola. So because they are from them, I have them all on 2 small shelving units. But the collection does have a big bite on my kitchen and dining area (we don't have a diningroom in this house). And I always leave my craft room for last by the time last comes around, it is more than Chaos in there. So this time I am starting there first and I am going to try real hard to do a room every 2 days as I think each room needs 2 days. It is almost spring time and I want to be done with spring time cleaning and enjoy it cause it lasts very short here before we are hitting 100 degrees.

I appreciate you sharing your temporary craft space.I understand somewhat of what you’re dealing with having your husband’s mother’s things. My father-in-law passed way back in 2009 and my husband filled the attic and his outer utility room with much of his dad’s things (which was only a minute amount of what he had). My husband still hasn’t cleared any of his dad’s things to this day, much to my chagrin. He’s kind of turning into his father’s son. Scary! Meanwhile, I seem to have outgrown my craft room and did a big purge last year. I need to re-organize things again due to thinking I would actually get into mixed media, which I haven’t. I moved some of that further away from my work area and moved other things closer. I did follow your advice on that. ☺️

But, I thought about a hospital bed table on casters. The problem $125 and up. I just need something like that so I can work from bed after my kids are in bed... if you come up with any ideas I would love to see them. This could help many who are short term or long term in bed status. The lap tables are just to small to barely open a book and I am putting crafty spins on bullet Journaling so hanging edge storage for pens etc. Would be helpful. But the lap desk not so much...Just an idea...

This is just my observation. When your video first open it does look cluttered. If you removed the greenery and just regular decor items , from the video point of view, it would less stressful to view. It is just a thought share. You do what you like!

Very nice. You have your work cut out for you. Very nice. I am not signed up for your patreon, I cannot afford it. I live in a nursing home and do not have the extra money. But I do enjoy your channel so well. 🩵🌹🛠️🪜👍

Hi, a Norinne! I loved seeing your new space. It still looks functional, to me. I get my craft room where I think I like it, use it for a while and then make changes that work better. I enjoy having the space so much but dream of a big space. I suspect, if I ever do have a bigger space, I will still have an ever-evolving craft room. Thank you so much!
