Thx for showing this. Yes, one of the genetic problems he had was A-1 antitrypsin which causes COPD/emphysema which began many yrs. earlier & at some point he needed using an inhaler to help him breath. On his '68 special sit down song Heartbreak Hotel he coughed a few times & at about 1:49-1:51 he said hold it, i’m out of breath, wait a minute, but then he just continued on. Somehow w-all the serious physical problems he managed to push on. He did say that many people are depending on him (meaning all the people in his employ) & he felt obligated, along w-the fact that he just plain loved the stage & the fans.

you're so right. he was pushed, prodded, and almost forced to 'go on stage' whether he was physically well or not. I believe there were too many hangers on, and too few 'truly care' people. the guy next to me in the Memphis Fire Dept. dispatch office, early afternoon on 8/16/1977, got the call from Graceland...send ambulance STAT. within 3 hrs we were getting calls from around the world wanting particulars on his death. very sad day for Memphians, and a good portion of the English speaking world.

Well .... actually .... he wasn't the first to have such fame. I believe a classical pianist was the first. The first to do touring concerts and have girls following him and fainting over him and collect souvenirs, like his discarded cigarette butts, handkerchiefs, were grabbed and treasured. His name - Franz Liszt. They even coined a name for it, look up Lisztomania. On the other hand, I wonder if Paganini was the first? Liszt was inspired by Paganini's flamboyant performances. But all this does not take away anything from Elvis. Elvis is the KING of rock and roll, his voice and moves just fitted the music so perfectly, but of course he himself will acknowledge he was inspired by black music and their performances, and one of the things that is so endearing about him is that he did not take himself too seriously, there was always that cheeky smile, something many impersonators miss. He was also possibly the handsomest singer to ever grace the stage. As Whitney Huston said "When Elvis enters the room you don't speak to him, you just look at him".

just finished studying out that last concert and it is true. i luv Elvis as much as anyone, but he was slurring his words when he spoke, at times. he was overweight but not that much, really, as compared to todays standards. he seemed nervous, and said so on stage. only played a set that lasted just over an hour. according to his handlers he was concerned that he wasn't up to his high standards for the upcoming tour. yeah. sad to see this as it was his last performance but also as to the lower caliber performance he gave. Lord. And his daughter and him are now reunited, i guess. thank you Rory. i appreciate your thoughts. watchin and diggin it from an old rock an roller in Gatlinburg, Tennessee. U.S.A. go with God. peace.

Is it the CBS TV special you're talking about? I've heard the real last show - the Indianapolis one - and it's much better. It still sounds like "a 1977 show" but it's as good as he could possibly get in his last couple of years (the fact he went well past the 60 minute mark, and included Bridge Over Troubled Water, says it all).

@@Grithron2 , yeah, brother...10 minutes over. Compared to Elvis at the height of his powers...the last performance, just wasn't as high a caliber. Still good, but he was capable of oh, so much more. Wish we could have held onto him longer to see another great comeback from the drugs and the weight, ect., alas, it was not meant to be. There will never, cannot, be another Elvis Presley. America lost her King. The world lost an icon. Lisa Marie lost her Daddy...We still love and honor the great singer/entertainer. The man. The legend. Now he belongs to the ages.

No The CBS special was not his last show It was his last **recorded** show. He did a few more after that. His last show was in Indianapolis. For some reason they used footage from the CBS special but we're speaking about the Indianapolis show.

Not much «revelatory» about this. Elvis’ shows were usually about one hour +/-, both on the road and in Vegas. In Vegas he sometimes did only 45 minutes, the hotel more people around the gambling tables. Warm-up acts were common in the 70’s, as it is today, nothing new there. His last show in Indianapolis were one of the better ones on his last tour, strong, powerful voice, and Elvis seemed to enjoy himself. Till the end, he was one of the biggest concert draws in entertainment, often topping the Billboard-survey over the concerts that drew most people, and generated most income. In June 1977, the only place he should have been, was in a hospital. Instead, on the 17th august (the day after he died), he was to embark on a completely sold-out tour (12 days). Ironically, Elvis the person was in in a critical physical condition, while Elvis the legend, just kept on thriving. In my mind, he was robbed of just enjoying life, the guy that started everything, as we today know as rockn roll, the celebrity culture, and you name it. He was a phenomenal performer and interpreter, just too bad he was kept in a box, never having a chance to expand his enormous talent.

Obvious error - not "narcotics" - he was more into speedy drugs, the prescription version of course. (You've heard all those shows where he's gabbling his announcements and filling every musical space with cha-cha-cha type noises - there's the proof!) Privately Elvis was talking in his last weeks of breaking with the Colonel, and going back into hospital with the aim of overcoming some of the drugs he'd become dependent on. But he had a psychological addiction to performing, and receiving the adulation of his fans. And it was probably too late anyway. His heart and his liver were both on the verge of packing up - the question was which one would go first? Predictably for someone born with Hirchsprungs, a difficult shit sealed his fate.
