...FACT: more flowers were shipped to Elvis' funeral than any time in the US....that STILL stands as the record for a single funeral!

@leroyleach7581: That's correct! What surprised me was that it was all possible within two days. Elvis was buried unusually quickly because the city of Memphis asked the Presley family to do so.

@@christielysdale1815 There is a video where you can see that employees later gave away all the flowers to the fans after the funeral. When all the flowers were given away, thousands of fans looked for leftover flowers because they wanted a souvenir of the day. just beautiful!

I'm a third generation Elvis fan. Born in 1984 but my grandma and mom were huge Elvis fans. On the day the announce Elvis was dead they dropped everything and drove to Graceland from South Carolina. They are in that crowd somewhere. The whole world stood still that day. And all these years later we still remember and love Elvis. Thanks for a great reaction and for keeping Elvis alive

The world stood still the day Elvis died. People wept for days and Elvis movies and music were played on TV and radio all that week. Everyone remembers where they were when they heard the sad news. The outpouring of grief was universal and worldwide, barring the haters.

I was on my way to a night class at my college when the radio announced his death. I cried so hard but had to go to class. There were people in the hallways crying. The school decided to end classes and sent us home. My heart still hurts from losing such an amazing human being.

It still saddens me to watch this all of these decades later. The whole country mourned for Elvis the day he died and in the days ahead. Our first international superstar; such a warm, charitable, captivating human being and performer. Bill Medley and Elvis were good friends. FYI in case you didn't know, Bill Medley was one half of The Righteous Brothers. Happy Heavenly Birthday, Elvis.

My wonderful mother would surprise me once a month by showing up at my junior high school to take me out of school so I could go with her to the Army base to the commissary to get groceries. Then we'd go out to lunch. Aug 18, 1977 was one of those special days and on the drive towards Ft. Campbell, KY the radio in the car blasted an emergency bulletin. The announcer said Elvis was dead. My mom pulled the car over and we were both just dumbfounded. I was 13 yrs old. I knew Elvis well as my mom and dad had many of his albums. My mom actually saw him at a gas station when he was stationed in Germany while enlisted in the Army. My father was also stationed there. She said she didn't have the nerve to approach him that his handsomeness left her frozen where she stood. By the time people realized who he was, he jumped in his car leaving with girls chasing after his car. What a tragic loss. I hope he realized how much he was loved. My mom passed Aug 18, 2001, same day as Elvis so many years later. I'm 60 years old now and will never forget that day.

The weight of the world was on those narrow young shoulders from the first performance. That has not changed. Elvis changed the world around him in immeasurable ways. The weight he carried then, and carries still, is beyond comprehension. He carried it as long as he could.

Same here, but I was 9 years old. Lisa's birthday was Feb. 1, 1968 and mine was one day later. My whole house mourned Elvis as though he were a family member. No other celebrity before or after had that effect. As a 9 year old I cried my eyes out and mourned with my family. I can't imagine how Lisa felt. This hits especially hard all these years later because of Lisa's death date coming up. The day that Elvis died, the whole country stopped. I remember it as though it were yesterday.

Estimated 80,000 people showed up by the end of the day. The world stopped. It was unreal. It was announced over a speaker in the store. My mom dropped her items and we left, immediately turned on the radio in the car and it was being talked about. The tears welled up in her eyes. Got home and the phone was ringing, it was my Grandmother in tears. I'm now a fan. Its inexplicable. Vicki

This was so poignant and beautiful. They had to round up those white limousines from neighboring states. My mom and sister attended the funeral and rode in one of the white limos with Gary Pepper and his mother. I had never seen this video with the tribute songs. It is wonderful. Thanks so much, Rory. I always put Elvis music on for my children and grandchildren for their naps. Something about his voice is soothing and comforting to everyone. I was there the weeks after he died and it was mayhem. People from all over the world were knocking on our doors wanting to talk and share their grief. ❤❤❤

Every flower shop sold out. It was so hot people were fainting in the street. Flags all over the country were half mast. I cried for two days. It was awful and so sudden. Thanks again for this tribute. Soul man James Brown said by his casket and Cried for 2 hours Ann Margaret sat with casket also. Crazy times.

interestingly enough, the first one to get to Graceland that day, was the God Father of soul, James Brown, who loved Elvis and sang spirituals together with him. He sat by Elvis casket till they had to remove him. He said "There will never be another like that soul brother". Ann Margaret who loved him even after she married Roger Smith also rushed to Graceland and was alone with is casket for a while. Up until his death Elvis sent her flowers on opening nights in Vegas, when flowers didn't come she knew something was wrong. Everything in the country paused. It was crazy. I was a 33 year old married mother of two, my husband was also a fan. We thought about going to Graceland but we couldn't work out the trip from Virgina to Tenn. Bill Murray talks about traveling to Graceland and standing with the people outside of Graceland. After he died, years later, composer and singer Paul Simon, spoke about taking his young son to see Elvis Grave and he said "I unexpectedly started to wept". Stevie Nicks said she saw his grave and wept. Why does it still sting , I can't explain it. Thanks Rory

Nice video. It breaks my heart every time I see the pictures from the funeral. It is so wonderful. if you can put it that way? I think everyone understands what I mean! I watch it sometimes because it's nice to see how the world loved Elvis Presley. The press wrote at the time: "For the first time the entire world mourned for one single person at the same time. The world loved Elvis"! According to the press, it was the third largest funeral in the world up to that point. There is a video with Elvis' father where you can see that there are thousands of telegrams from all over the world: including from statesmen from all over the world, from royal families from all over the world, from politicians and from the Vatican to the Presley family.

Vernon Presley opened up Graceland so that the public got to view Elvis’ body. «men, women and children left the casket like they had been hit in the stomach. Most were crying, some not able to utter a sentence, totally grief-stricken». News report describing the scene. His death was a major news story in the 20th century, impossible tofathom for the new generation. He was a household name, a man that millions thought of as a family member, a living legend, a canvas that everyone could paint their own picture and fantasies on. Norwegian singer, Benny Borg, upon hearing of Elvis dying, commented; «it was the first time that I’d ever seen people openly crying reading the headlines in the newspapers, totally amazing».
