"Elvis Enters the Army 3-24-58, Negative Trims" (1958, Frank Koza Collection, 16mm, B&W negative, sound)
Singer Elvis Presley is processed into the Army on March 24, 1958 at Fort Chaffee, Arkansas. He talks to reporters, fills out paperwork, and gets a physical examination. Elvis' parents, Vernon and Gladys Presley, are seen briefly, looking dour. The day was dubbed "black Monday" for his fans by the press.
The singer entered regular Army service as a private, rather than joining Special Services, in which he would have entertained troops.

    His poor momma. She hated every bit of that & stressed about him nonstop. Imagine having the most talented human being as your son & then he gets drafted into the army. It breaks my heart to see a family so close get torn apart under such stressful circumstances.

    In the movie Loving You in a dance scene Elvia and both his parents are visible. Also footage of them exist when Elvis played the Tupelo Liveshows in ‘56. So this is not the only footage of them together. But sinde Gladys died a few months after this day, I suppose this could be the last footage as a whole family.

The footage from Loving You wasn't exactly Elvis together with this parents but I get what you mean. This new footage shows how close Elvis was to his Mother when they look at each other.

    Couldn't agree more... Totally unnecessary n as the daughter of a career military officer I'm shocked they allowed private press on base at all... The military had it's own press corps there... I agree that , even if the military wanted to foster goodwill, being filmed in such an invasive manner was totally inappropriate! I would imagine , maybe not in 1958, but today if this happened ... N I don't think it would, all the other troops filmed would have to give consent to be in the film....

  • @Embracing01

    @Embracing01

    He did, that's the biggest mystery for me about Elvis, where the hell did he get those looks from because to me he did not look like a normal human being, no human has such a perfect shaped nose, cheekbones, eyes/brows, chin etc, and it doesn't matter if you're black, white, caucasian, chinese, indian, etc, everyone has a flawed face, but he didn't, his face was like a work of art sculpted from stone. It's like he wasn't human or was of a different race of human that we don't know about. Elvis is often likened to a greek god of the statues of Apollo, but they were supposedly myths, but looking at Elvis with his striking resemblance to them it makes me wonder whether they actually existed. But how do two random white American's people produce a child that grows up to look like a statue of a greek god? lol.

    @@kay8698 That is the way the new Elvis movie tells it but it's not actually true. He was never forced to choose between jail or the Army. Elvis had to register for the draft at 18 like everyone else and then he got called up for duty. He probably could've gotten a deferral, because he was the primary breadwinner for his family and his fame caused a lot of problems while he was in the Army, but he decided to go ahead and serve his time like everyone else.
