Elusive Glitches: The Story of Early Explosives

Ойындар

Glitches such as Barrier Skip and Moonwarp are considered to be Holy Grails of 3D Zelda Speedrunning. In this video, I recount the story of the Holy Grail for The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D. A trick known as Early Explosives.
Live speedruns at www.twitch.tv/gymnast86
Twitter: MrGymnast86
The footage used in this video comes from a number of sources. Any footage of the original game came from either ZFG or Exodus122.
ZFG: kzread.info/dron/k9RA3G-aVQXvp7-Q4Ac9kQ.html
Exodus122: kzread.info/dron/eXfxAI74Iy1W8_2P8Shd9w.html
The footage of Ocarina of Time 3D starts out being upscaled on the emulator Citra. But recording footage on Citra turned out to be very time consuming, so instead I opted to record most of it on my own 3DS (this is why the video quality seems to get worse after the deku tree cutscene clip).
Some of the concepts I explain in this video are greatly simplified. Here are links to more technical explanations:

I mean it is technically a victory in an any% finish scenario. There still isn't a way to get explosives early from what I have gathered. Whether or not that "matters" idk, but I would assume early explosives would be pretty useful for something like 100% maybe.

To be fair to Grezo (I never thought I'd say that) I'm pretty sure Navi dive wasn't discovered yet when they made this game. So the only way to dive through the water was cucco dive and cuccos are only in the daytime version of Kakariko. So it makes sense from a stopping sequence breaks perspective to only put it there at day... Makes no sense from a game design perspective though, since you can see it from above.

@@unclevivid9028 I know I'm 2 months late but I'm commenting anyway. This is a terrible mindset to have. The whole Elusive Glitches series is about making skips of things that are currently impossible to do. For the longest time barrier skip was impossible to, but that didn't stop people from trying to find a possible way. Even if Early explosives isn't useful in any% runs anymore, if found it could be useful in 100% or all dungeons. Who knows, in the future it might be found that you don't even need Farore's wind to wrong warp. There might be a glitch found where you need explosives but an't have a bomb bag in your inventory. We just don't know. In the original Oot, there were many glitches found that had no use until later. Ocarina items for example. It was found that you could use any item as an ocarina relatively early on, it was a fun glitch but had no use. Not until wrong warping was discovered. Then all of a sudden this simple glitch became a key component of the much larger glitch.

would finding a consistent "explosives early" setup at this point be any faster? depending on how difficult it is to execute, it might make the route easier, and it is no longer a holy grail, but would it shave any time overall?

Realistically, I would think not. First of all, many "clip out of bounds" glitches take comparatively little time to actually perform once consistency is obtained. It's why they tend to save so much time in the first place, regardless of the game. Second, employing Explosives Early requires travel to a tertiary location in the chain. Having to detour to get Explosives Early takes time, but if you can Skip Explosives (by clipping) then said detour isn't even required. So you're saving time on that entire chain of events. ----- Which, I want to highlight the video's own stated times. Explosives Early was expected to remove about 7 minutes from the 40-minute consistent times. Skipped Explosives winds up regularly saving 8 minutes. This means someone who would pull Explosives Early would need to find somewhere to save a full extra minute to remain competitive.

@@onijester56 it was simply that one little question stuck in the back of my head after the video. as great as a happy ending is, it fails to encourage glitch hunters, and if that tiny ray of light existed, it would help make up for it. i have no experience pulling off either skip in the video, but set up time is something to consider for both glitches. it was only mentioned briefly, but i did hear him claim that the death mountain fairy skip was difficult and finicky to set up, so it is theoretically possible that a detour could be faster if a consistent method was found. I also thought runners liked having back up plans, which even a slower explosives detour could provide for marathon runs.

@@cullenlatham2366 I know I'm about 2 months late, but I'm going to comment regardless. Glitch hunters are a dedicated section of the speedrunning community who've taken it upon themselves to find glitches no matter what they are or how significant it might be. While their search can be focused like trying to find explosives early or whatnot, just because an alternative is found doesn't mean they will stop searching for it or glitches in general. There are many glitches that are found, but don't have a use until much later. A good example would be Ocarina items from OoT. The ability to use any item as an ocarina was found long before it became relevant, it was a fun glitch but wasn't really useful at the time. Not until wrong warping was discovered. Then all the sudden this small glitch became a key function of a much larger glitch. You also have other categories to think about. I'm pretty sure early explosives would be useful in 100% runs of the game or an all dungeons run. Even if not, it could be useful in a future glitch that requires you to have explosives, but no bomb bag, we just don't know. This is why any glitch that's found is worth the investment, no matter how seemingly insignificant it seems. I would like to say while I'm not a glitch hunter myself, this I think is the mindset of many a glitch hunter at least to some degree.

@@yppahdalg2397 i was speaking mostly from that same mindset of trying to find the value of it. I was seeing if there was any hypothetical advantage to finding it fast for those of us who only have a casual interest in glitch hunting. If there is hope, that leads to inspiration. with the "happy ending", there is less reason for would-be glitch hunters to look into the scenarios that could result in such a development. The other side of the coin is that anyone actively glitch hunting for the game will now put early explosives lower on their bucket list as an alternative already exists.

the downside is that with a solution comes a lack of motivation for potential glitch hunters that watch the video to continue (or start) hunting.

SO the reason why you can't save 7 minutes is because a glitch is 4 seconds too slow due to items despawning faster? Dude, that just... really sucks :(

Makes me wonder if we should add new criteria to finishing a game. Right now it's get to the credits asap. Credits warp are OP in that regard. What if it was changed to 1. defeat the final boss, or get to some scene after it if those exist, and THEN get the credits.
