Elton John - Song For Guy

Музыка

This video for Elton’s only principally instrumental single was shot on the set of the Australian music television show Countdown and broadcast on December 1978. Elton explains in his autobiography ‘Me’ that the song was named after Guy Burchett, a 17 year-old messenger boy for his company who had died in a motorcycle crash “at virtually the same time I was writing the song.” Farewell Yellow Brick Road Tour band member Ray Cooper can be heard playing wind chimes and shakers on the track.

I delivered newspapers in my early teens and struck up a friendship with another delivery boy. Our paths used to cross in the mornings when we collected our delivery loads. The other lad also had a motorbike which he cherished. Our friendship was brief as one day when I went to collect my delivery the owner of the newsagent informed that this lad had died the night before in a motor bike crash. Though I was upset it didn't register too deeply at the time but over the years I think of him from time to time and wonder how his life would have panned out if he was still alive and how unfair it was that his life was cut so short. This was 50 odd years ago and I still think of him from time to time.

My mum was diagnosed with early onset dementia this year, age 56 . Doesn’t know me anymore, doesn’t recognise me . I used to listen to this song in my early twenties when I was stressed or worried, or scared - gave me comfort . Six weeks ago I found a cassette tape of my mum’s titled ‘relaxation’ - same song, same age - she would have been early 20s too. Listen to it now when I miss my mum, makes me feel she’s still with me in some sense .

When may grandmother died with 56, i had 8 years old. After the funeral, i entered in the room of my uncle to take a book off his shelf. When i opened the door, i saw him sit in his armachair with eyes closed listenning a piano song. After many years, i started to like Elton John's music. One day, i was running around a big lake in the city where my grandmother once lived and in some new coffee shop this song was playing. I entered, bought a bottle of water and asked the attendant which song was that. Song For a Guy, he said.

As a heavy metal fan, I've never bothered to listen to this type of music, but I must admit, Elton John was a genius in his own right. This track is quite moving and a great tribute to the lad who died. Some of his early stuff was really good and I respect the comments of those who have lost loved ones. It's great that a song can do so much to uplift the soul and bring back those memories. Thanks Elton Bill

May be it is spiritually enchanting. In late 70s this tune was released. I've always felt it a melancholy tune with Elton singing 'life isn't everything', which I thought was about someone who had died - didn't know about the story until now. Strange of the few pop records my mum bought, somehow she bought this and I'd play it repeatedly. So it's very special to me. Thanks. ♥️

Since I was young, I really love the song melody contrast between the calm, down to earth sequence and the then ethereal, heavenly and magic part. It just really drive our state of mind into putting our entire life memories into perspective.

I’m not Elton john fan, it’s not that I don’t realise how talented he is , it’s not my type of music but this is a masterpiece of music , guaranteed to make me cry somehow. When I learned who guy was , it made sense to me why I cry. I can guess that this music , this track could mean an awful lot to a lot of people. ❤️.

A lot of people don't realize what a genius he is along with his depth of catalogue because he usually plays the "hits" or well known songs that everyone knows which is a travesty really as a lot of his lessor known songs are even better

All kindred spirits here after the Crown, searching for this incredible almost forgotten masterpiece. I did not know Elton John did this one, I was 7 years old at that time and heard it often on the radio. Nostalgia at its best. Being part of the Commonwealth, most UK pop culture and this song was big In South Africa, and then sanctions came along several years later..The Crown did a magnificent job showing that story.
