Honestly, as an EJ fan since the Elton John album was released I must say... THE BEST thing about (70s) EJ is.... THE BAND. The most underrated band of all time IMHO. Nigel Olsen's drumming is always one of my top favs (at the start of the band, it was just Nigel, Dee, and Elton), Dee Murray on bass... again so underrated, but one of the first players that played bass much like a 6 string electric guitar, Davey Johnstone is that guitar player that supports the song maybe better than anyone, but can jam out on killer solos (I just wish there were more of them and longer, but hey it is what it is.), and of course Elton on Piano and harpsicord (sp). Then there is EJ's voice, so wonderful and iconic.

So much greatness, but the way Elton can rock the piano is the best, bar none. The way he intertwines piano on most of his songs is beautiful.

Was ground-breaking for the radio to play a song this long.

Elton went from folky/pop star to Rock and Roll king with this album. You say you know "Candle in the Wind", "Bennie and the Jets". Have you heard the title track? It's probably my favorite Elton song. "Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting" is a must hear, if you haven't heard it already. His version of "Pinball Wizard" is great! "Medley: (Yell Help...)", "Grow Some Funk of Your Own" and "Billy Bones and the White Bird" all have a prog rock feel to them.

Listen to all his albums up through 1975's "Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy". What a streak of great albums.

“Love Lies Bleeding” is a type of flower (and Brit’s do love their flowers) so it’s an interesting juxtaposition of a phrase if he meant it another way. He does talk about his roses in the first line.

Elton John has a huge catalogue chock full of nothing but awesome greatness. And out of all of them, this... THIS one is my absolute favorite. Hands down. At the time it was released I was already a huge fan of King Crimson, ELP, early Genesis, etc. and I never expected him to bring prog elements into his pop-rock style much less do it so expertly! I was blown away the first time I heard it!

This is my favorite Elton John song and album. To tell you the truth I'm like you, though his hits are good I've heard them too many times to go out of my way to hear them again. Perhaps I could listen to "Daniel" again, which is currently my only Elton John request.

Elton and his original band at their prime, top tier talent left to do what they wanted under the studio mastermind of Mr Elton, no time constraints or label bigwigs looking over their shoulders. The big bucks of his future transition into pop god ruled over creativity

Sir Elton with a bit of prog thrown in...tasty indeed The production/engineering was ahead of its time, sounds like it could have been made today

Elton and Bernie's range is just staggering. From the country western/mellow TUMBLEWEED CONNECTION to All the way to Captain Fantastic and Rock of the Westies. Then there's great hits like SACRIFICE and I GUESS THAT'S WHY THEY CALL IT THE BLUES. HIs work on the Lion King is iconic. And there's tunning songs like TICKING and INDIAN SUNSET which will surprise you. You could spend a year or two exploring his vast catalogue.

Best song off his best album. It's great when he starts the live show with this. Berzerkely Greek Theatre summer 1984. Only F----n $20 "I wonder if those changes have left a scar on you. Like all those hoops of fire that you and I passed through. You're a bluebird on a telegraph line, I hope you're happy now. Cause if the wind of change is coming down your way girl, you'll make it back somehow". He's retired now.

Wayne, though someone else plays the synthesizer here, you might find it interesting that on some of the other songs on this album, Elton plays mellotron and organ in addition to piano. For next song, my favorite is Saturday Night's Alright For Fighting, but I'll suggest Philadelphia Freedom. Its got great instrumentation including flute, horns and strings, and a standout bass line. Another fantastic song.

Good reaction for 2 great songs by Elton + Bernie + band. For a deep dive w/o all the hits gor Elton, I recommend Tumbleweed Connection, his ode to American West + South plus Live 11/17/70. Elton + the band rock out here, it was broadcast live on WABC radio NYC @ 10:00 PM (as I recall).

I would react to anything from his early albums. One of my favorite albums is "Tumbleweed Connection". I would do "Where to Now, St. Peter?" or "Come Down in Time" or a live version of "Burn Down the Mission" would also be great.

As far as I know, this is the only piece of this style by Sir Elton. I would love to be wrong and hear of similar if there are any. That said, just about everything by this lineup is fantastic. If you can, go back and do even earlier albums. You won’t regret it.

Ok, deep rabbit hole. But from ‘71 thru ‘75, Elton had the world bythe throat,”. But when he fired his amazing rhythm section in Dee Murray and Nigel Olson, he blewoff one of his feet and fucked with a band that had given him 5 hit albums in a row. That band was never as good after that. He later found success years later when he started writing for Disney movies. Try thesongs, “Have Mercy On TheCriminal”, “All The Young Girtls Love Alice, or “Ticking”. The ARP synthesizer used on this track was played by engineer David Hentchel (Pink Floyd, Henesis).
