ELP at 50! Carl Palmer reflects on ELP at the Isle of Wight in 1970
Музыка
Today - August 29, 2020 - marks the 50th Anniversary of Emerson, Lake & Palmer's "world debut" at the Isle of Wight festival. Although the group had done one warm up show in Plymouth, the Isle of Wight (and its subsequent documentary film) introduced the band to a massive global audience. From that day forward, everyone in the music community knew the name: Emerson, Lake & Palmer.
Were you at the Plymouth or Isle of Wight show? If so, please share your memories in the comments:

Thank you for everything Carl! Well all miss Keith and Greg. I'm 62 and you're still my all time favorite drummer! Long live ELP!!!!
One of the greatest drummers ever!! For some reason Rolling Stone never mentions him in their greatest drummers while mentioning Tommy Lee. That should tell you what kind of writers they have at Rolling Stone.

Absolutely! RC
There are good drummers, there are great drummers and then there's Carl. There has never been a drummer with his raw talent and mastery of the instrument and I doubt there ever will be. Yes, Isle of Wight was the big break they needed, but the talent of those three boys was not going to be hidden for long. God bless you Carl, and Keith and Greg. You gave us music that can still bring a tear to my eyes 50 years later!

He influenced my decision to take drum lessons and his parents deserve alot of credit because it's clear that they believed in his talent.
Thank you Carl for carrying on the legacy. You are truly a great musician and man! Stay safe. Here's hoping that we'll see you very soon. ✌🏻❤️🤘🏻
ELP has given me happiness for over 40 years and seeing Keith, made me make the decision to be a pianist. Thank you, Carl, and I hope in your memory book you will count the why in parentheses 74/77 that made them lose momentum. With respect and affection, I send you a big hug.
Love Carl - what a sweet person not to mention he IS an incredible drummer!!!!!!!!!!!!! I remember being on the subway in New York when ASIA was pretty young - only myself and - there was Carl - I sat across from him -I did not say anything - I really didn't know what to say. So now I'll say it: Carl you are my earliest inspiration for drums - God bless you sir for giving me so much encouragement through your excellence.
Thank you carl!! ELP will always be a legendary band. RIP Keith and Greg🙏🙏💖💖💖
Carl palmer= the greatest drummer ever! As the theme from James bond: Nobody does it better🎤 Jan from Denmark
Hi Carl. ELP is my all time fave band. First time seeing you guys was at the Long Beach Areana Feb 6, 1974. Blew my head off and dedicated fan ever since. Was also at Cal Jam 1. God bless Kieth and Greg and God bless you Carl you 3 have brought me so much joy in the last 46 years.
😎👍❤🇬🇧🇺🇸🥁🎼 GO CARL GO!!! Happy 50th Anniversary ELP! Keith & Greg rest easy, we all miss you!
Still play Fanfare For The Common Man in my local band as a tribute to ELP. Being a drummer myself, Carl Palmer has always been one of my favorites of all time.
One of the greatest concerts ever (for me) was ELP at the Long Beach Arena for Brain Salad. Massive, beautiful, technically amazing, musically brilliant...three little guys on this huge stage making more music than I'd ever heard in my life. Thank you Mr. Palmer! (Glad I wasn't tasked with lifting your kick drum!)
50 yrs later still the greatest band ever!
Fantastic!!! Thank you Carl! Stay safe❤
One of the best drummers in rock history
Thank You Carl for carrying the torch. ELP was always my #1 band i must hv seen them @least 20 something times . Montreal Olympic Stadium , & 2nights before @ Maple Leaf Gardens & speaking of Gardens @ MSG in N.Y. i would go every nite they played . The 1st time i saw them was @Asbury Park Convention Center in N.J. They never played a bad show 2 & 1/2 to 3 hours of just spectacular music. Hey Rock & Roll Hall of Shame Wake Up!!!!
Cheers, Carl! Love hearing your recollections, thanks for sharing! We're on fire here in California (and not in a good way), on top of a plague, so please stay safe, and here's wishing everyone good health and happiness, and a much better 2021. Looking forward to seeing you then. Meanwhile, enjoying your music every day, as usual!
Saw him play live with ASIA in the 80's. One of the greats!
ELP introduced me to classical music and I never looked back. Palmer may be the only drummer from his generation still working because the culture of drugs and alcohol destroyed alot of careers and lives. Thanks for the memories and I will always cherish my ELP collection.

Was ahead of his time for drumming and a healthy lifestyle. In 1977, video showing his exercise regiment at a time sex and drugs ruled.
Love you man!
ELP are my favourite band and if there's one event in music history I could attend it would the incredible range of artists assembled at Isle of Wight 1970, but alas I was born too late!
That was the 2nd album my dad played for me and my brothers your a great story teller as well as the the drummer I've ever seen and I play a little bit lol
I was there! Fantastic set with a cannon if I recall.
ELP FOREVER. HELLO CARL! HAPPY NEW YEAR!
Whoever was responsible for assembling that lineup of performers deserves to be knighted. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Isle_of_Wight_Festival_1970#Performances
I agree with the previous comment, Greg Lake was one of the greatest drummers of all time. He was a power house and a very technical drummer too. I love listening to ELP as it brings back great memories. I will look for the Isle of Wight festival with ELP’s short performance as I’m sure it was amazing. Cheers.

Greg Lake wasn't the drummer.
ELP💖 talent, talent and talent! Thank You, Carl is emotion heard about that past time, amazing!
Good stuff! I visited Advision Studios in the summer of 1974 after high school graduation. No one was booked at the time and the engineer gave me a tour of the 16-channel board and the room where Tarkus and Trilogy happened. Don't remember being offered any 'am o chaise tho.
I am really almost speechless! I was only 14 years old! OMG, what is happening? Well, I do know I will have ELP in my soul for life and afterlife.. Many memories of many shows...and even Carl Palmer's ELP Legacy opening for 'Yes' in San Diego not long ago...but I hope if they stop here again, they will have a keyboardist (in addition to or instead of a guitarist) . Either way, I won't complain.
Seeing the full videotape of ELP's performance on the Isle of Wight would be like a dream! There only some short fragments around. :(

There is a DVD titled "ELP The Birth of a Band at the Isle of Wight Festival 8.29.19870" Probably available at Amazon. This has several interviews and the songs featured include, Pictures, Take a Pebble, Rondo and Nutcracker. Approx 70 minutes long. The Carl Palmer Band ELP Legacy shows are great and I highly recommend the show if it comes to your neck of the woods.
great story! thanx carl :) let´s buy a time machine and see the whole festival again :)
