Very sad to hear that the ferry has moved. Several years ago in 2009 while I was still living in the UK I drove down the coast from Prestwick and took the ferry over to Belfast for a daytrip. I thought it was most convenient for folks coming off of the train to get right onto the ferry. I must agree with Vicki and say the station nearly looks like a ghost town now without the ferry as its neighbor.

Well said Vicky about the demise of the train-ferry link from Stranraer. On the first day of the Eyjafjallajökull volcano eruption in 2010 I was to fly back home to Northern Ireland from Newcastle. With flights cancelled my travel plans transferred to rail. So the following day I had one of my best days travelling - East Coast from Newcastle to Glasgow via Edinburgh, then Scotrail from Glasgow to Stranraer, followed by boat to Belfast. The train from Glasgow was packed and they had to put 3 units on to accommodate the passengers. On arriving at Stranraer the platform was 4 deep with people awaiting the train back to Glasgow. It would not be possible to do this now, which is a pity. But even in Belfast, the ferry does not link up with the trains. you have to rely upon a shuttle bus to the main bus station.

I lived in stranraer for fifteen years & used it to travel to ayr for college. One of the biggest reasons for the station's rather distressed condition is because it's in Dumfries & Galloway & they have a very anti-rail stance. There used to be a line from Dumfries to Stranraer that was known as The Port Road & it used to be a very active part of the Scottish network until closure in the mid sixties. In the nineties there was proposals to re-lay the port road as an alternative to endlessly maintaining the rather over-used A75 road. However, Dumfries & Galloway council refused to give permission. I don't understand the main argument against it but it certainly has something to do with the buses

It seems so penny wise and pound foolish. The ferry passengers are hugely inconvenienced (and a number probably choose not to take the ferry because it's not so easy any more), the station suffers, businesses close, etc.

SB Trains, Planes and Drives Yes I've used the old HSS ferry from Stranraer to Belfast (now withdrawn and scrapped) before it was taken off, and the current crossing from Cairnryan (the replacement port) more recently, also the more seamless coach package (which is also available from Edinburgh) through to Belfast, so I can compare all three. There is a bus service from Stranraer to Cairnryan, but all rail/sail passengers from Glasgow or beyond are now encouraged to change at Ayr onto the coach.from thete, indeed all through ticketing is routed that way. It seems by what Geoff said that the town of Stranraer has suffered a bit by losing its status as a port, at least the railway line has remained open, though I suspect the trains are a lot quieter. At least ferry passengers can now just use the more frequent electric service to Ayr, rather than the much more sparse diesel trains to Stranraer, but then you've got over an hour's journey on the coach, plus the inconvenience of an additional transfer at Ayr, at least it's on the level there, with no stairs to climb, but it's not ideal, and the Ayr-Stranraer section of line has become redundant as far as boat passengers are concerned, with the coach more or less paralleling the railway line all the way to Cairnryan. As far as I know there are no plans to open a station in the Cairnryan area, to offer a shorter transfer from train to ship (like Luton Airport Parkway to the airport). At least the remaining passengers on the infrequent trains to Stranraer don't have their trains crowded with boat passengers any more, so it's a bit less hectic for them, but that's not really looking at the bigger picture is it?

6:38 What The Fuck has Happened to Stranraer ferry terminal, ita been destroyed and neglected. they have taken the Welcome to Stranraer sign off the Station Canopy, the walkway has been removed, the terminal is so neglected and the buildings have been destroyed, it looks like Chernobyl and the railway future is uncertain because they removed Stranraer to Glasgow via Kilwining and on Sundays Services only go as far as ayr I always remember going from Glasgow to Stranraer via Kilwining on 2 4 car Class 156, get to Stranraer and jump onto the ferry to Larne and then Belfast. Since ferries aren't there anymore I don't want to go Stranraer anymore Stranraer was always gateway to northern Ireland and you went to Stranraer for one reason to get the ferry to Northern Ireland The Services had passengers for Stranraer and passengers for ferry, with ferries at Fucking Cairnryan, there's not many passengers on the Train to Stranraer 7:20 its so sad watching the train leaving Stranraer but the ferry terminal in despair and I agree with Vicki speech about Stranraer ferry connection, Passengers now have to get Glasgow to Ayr train and then Coach from Ayr to Cairnryan to the ferry, but Stranraer Services were the train to get the ferry to Northern Ireland and line had a purpose, If Dr Beaching was here today he would closed this line when ferries had left Stranraer. I agree with nightw4tchman Comment AND the reason why the ferry doesn't run from Stranraer is why privatising individual sectors of transport doesn't work! All Transport apart from Airlines should be Nationalised that includes the Railway, Coach and Ferries. Like the Good old days when we had British Rail, National Express and Sealink British Ferries. Dover to Calais was where you could see the difference between Sealink and P&O as they are two company's but run differently, P&O is Privatised and runs on profit while Sealink is Nationalised and runs as a company for the Public. I don't have problems with P&O Ferries because they are the only privatised ferry company I like so they can stay. I like the Ferries that went to Stranraer (St David than Stena Caledonia) (Galloway Princess) and (Stena Navigator) I don't like there replacements Superfast Ferries its too much, it looks like a casino ferry than a Ferry. I feel very sorry for the Town of Stranraer, the Ferry terminal and the Railway and also the people who worked at Stranraer ferry terminal its so sad, Stranraer operated ferries from Stranraer from 1861 to 2011, 150 years of ferry's operated at Stranraer Also Cairnryan and Stena Line, THANK YOU FOR FUCKING STRANRAER UP YOU BASTARDS

Stranraer is one of those places that seems to be screaming for its station to be closed and for a new station to be built closer to the town centre. If the ferries aren't running from there anymore, then you ought to bring passengers into the town itself instead - would definitely help the high street out. Personally I'd like to see services from Dumfries (and destinations beyond) reinstated aswell.

When you do All the Stations (Ireland) Na stáisiúin uile (best not to use on NIR) you will of course come across Larne Harbour station which has also suffered with the preferred route being Belfast now rather than Larne which like Cairnryan also does not have a direct rail link. You will also have to get off at Sydenham across the bypass from George Best Airport to see the way to get to the terminal. Interconnectivity isn't so much a strong point outside of some of the bus stations in Northern Ireland these days.

Stranraer for many years used to be where the ferries from Northern Ireland (Larne & Belfast) would dock in Loch Ryan along with Cairnryan a few miles further up the road from Stranraer. All the ferries to Larne & Belfast from South West Scotland now go from Cairnryan and the docks at Stranraer have been closed. Stenalink and P&O were the ferry operators. As far as I am aware P&O are still doing Cairnryan to Northern Ireland. Maybe even Stenalink as well.

The bus connection from Ayr to the new Cairnryan ferry terminal is actually quicker than it used to be direct to Stranraer on the train, The problem with it is if like me you travel with your dog then as the connecting coach service doesn't carry dogs , you have to go through on the train all the way to Stranraer Harbour and then make your own way to the ferry terminal. The last time I went there was a service bus which connected with the trains but Im not sure if its still runs to the station nf its a long walk into the town centre.

It's cheap flights that did for Stranraer ferry terminal: foot passengers switched to flying Glasgow-Belfast. The new terminal is better located for cars and lorries, as it avoids traffic having to go into the town. Best thing that could happen now would be to relocate Stranraer station nearer the town centre. Not saying I agree with Stena's decision but I do see the logic from their point of view.

Although it seems daft to have the bus to Cairnryan run from Ayr, it does make sense - from Ayr, the bus gets to Cairnryan _quicker_ than the train gets to Stranraer. There are also a lot more trains to Ayr, including regular direct trains from Glasgow, so it's very easy to adjust the times of the buses to fit the ferries, without ruining connections or having to re-cast large sections of the timetable to make it fit. (So with that in mind, you do have to wonder why the buses are timed to arrive at Cairnryan often 1½ hours before the ferry is due to depart ... foot passengers shouldn't need that long to check in!)

I know, talking about buses on a train documentary but I can't help but notice all the Optare Solos you've seen in Scotland on the streets They're like the Pacers of bus enthusiasts. Some love them, some hate them

They look really similar to VDL Citea LLEs, which are the Pacers of Finnish bus enthusiasts. Some love them, some hate them. Personally I’m one of the people who hate them.

Any chance you will add a "least used stations" episode along the Ayr-Stranraer line? Could you investigate how passenger counts have declined since the demise of NI ferry service from Stranraer, and if there are any efforts to improve facilities and traffic on the line? Cheers!
