    The lack of builtin ethernet and the use of a proprietary cable is the most asinine thing they've done with the new revision, especially when Oleg Kutkov reverse engineered the dongle and it's just a passthrough for Dishy and the eth connector + magnetics and few passives IE nothing special. @@johnkean6852 that doesn't make sense. Do you know how internet works? An ISP provides service to an address and the modem decodes that signal they send you. It also is assigned an IP thats used by your ISP. Your router then disperses that signal and has its own IP used on your LAN or WLAN. The satellite is connected to a modem router combo and the modem router combo is plugged into wall power only. Your ISP can't send you internet service through power lines. The dish itself receives a signal from a satellite and that signal is decoded and dispersed to the end user via the modem router combo.

    The roaming being on is both good and bad. It's going to screw people over who live in popular areas when their cells get flooded by roamers dropping speeds. That said, Starlink has been bizarre on what constitutes a "full cell". If your getting 130mbps download, your cell isn't even close to full yet Starlink marks them as full (why!?). Starlink did the same thing with the lower latitude US states, fully serviceable but they refuse to send out dishys and activate service there for over 1+ years after service actually worked there. There is a lot to hate about Starlink's rollout process and policy but if you get it and it works, it is the best thing ever, at a very good price.

Both of them are charging more than Starlink at the same speed. A lot of USA's cities doesn't have fiber optic in their infrastructure. There is no upgrade plan at all. Well, here in Norway it's often quite easy and cheap to get fiber if you live in the countryside, quite simply because we've had robots stretching fiber optics along the power lines since the late 90's. It's actually more difficult to get decent internet and speed in the city center, used to have 1gbs up/down, but now I "only" have 500/25mbps.

    that's a lot harder to find out then just saying that. falcon 9 launches are about $9 million (or less) + cost of the satellites, half a million each. you can put 40+ into space at once. in the grand scheme of things, that's pretty affordable. you also get the added benefit of less government control (censoring, propaganda, blocking, etc) Then if you wanna run fiber everywhere, you do have the added benefit of there being pre-existing fiber, but fiber cables (for residential use) is about $1-$6 per foot. hundreds more for better cables. add in labor and the sheer amount of people and distance there is to cover and the price quickly adds up. You also need technicians literally everywhere to fix cables and other issues. the biggest issue would be "the last mile" and cost the most. and it would be especially difficult in rough terrain or weather (Siberia, Himalayans, etc) SpaceX says it would take $1 trillion for worldwide coverage, and while I couldn't find an estimate for the same for fiber optics, I'm certain it would be more or similar, but with higher operation costs. SpaceX literally has their own rocket, they can launch at the cheapest price, and usually that's just the cost of fuel. I'm not exactly sure which is more cost effective, but SpaceX obviously can afford it, so it seems like it's that route that works the best.

    @@godofnothing520 In many places it's getting harder to get broadband - and fiber has been out of the question all the while. My friend had to back out of buying a house 2 doors down from his existing place because ATT is no longer allowing new DSL accounts. They wouldn't even just move his existing account. The house already has a copper phone line, they just don't want to deal with the overhead of providing broadband to rural areas anymore - telling them to switch to their hot new wireless internet access point, except that they don't even provide cell service out there. Starlink is the only option for my friend out there and he'll have to wait for another year at least the way things are going. Yes, fiber on the ground is faster, but it also requires that it exists. Starlink will exist virtually everywhere on the globe you could find yourself, no wires or fiber required. No ground routers to maintain, just pure data transfer through the sky. The delay of transmitting to low earth orbit is only milliseconds more. This isn't geosynchronous satellite internet we're talking about where there's 500+ millisecond round trip time.

    Idk how you could be on the fence about Starlings long term prospects? Global satellite internet is an awesome thing they're definitely going to achieve and also very lucrative. They may be pushing back dates but the progress is still extremely fast.

    "Global" You mean just the USA? Business it's better to use fiber, normal people.. just use fiber, if they can't afford fiber they can't afford starlink Unless they plan to reduce the monthly price to $30 or less then it's not going global

    I calculated the capacity versus the footprint of each satellite a year or so ago. I can't remember the exact figures but it was something like starlink can handle one customer per two square miles of land..

    I live in a semi-rural place with no cable. We now get wifi from the cell provider. I have a neighbor in the same boat. We're kicking around getting a starlink setup and "share" the wifi and split the costs. We shall see.

    I pre-ordered Starlink for my mother's address and recently went active in April. Hooked it up and when it has a good lock on a satellite, it's BLAZING but I've seen it go down to 10mbps down too so I have a feeling her area isn't fully saturated with enough satellites but I think average I see 80-100 down and 10 up. The ping times are all over the place too. From 60ms to 110ms, per the app. HOWEVER, it stomps Windstream's 5Mbps/0.4Mbps DSL connection since they refuse to run fiber on her road despite being given tons of money to do so...

    I am still waiting on starlink, but in reality with price increases and the time it's taking, 4g lte may be my opinion . I use it now with one of the RV plans which I bought for 65 a month and my 100 gig TMobile hotspot which is 50, and I have useable internet , not 100 meg, average 30 meg down and 11 meg up. it's enought to work and watch TV. tmobile just added new towers so my 5g signal , is there, and with my booster my 4g is max.. I may switch to tmobiles internet next year if starlink does not deliver , I could cancel the hotspot and the RV plan and it's 50$ a month. I tested it here, and since it has priority I get 80mb down and 15mb up. plus it has hardwired ports .

    I hope you setup a raspberry pi and collect up/download speeds over time. I’m worried that Starlink will throttle the speed over time for roaming connections. They’ll treat roaming connections as a lower class service giving preference to people who are subscribe to that geographical area. QOS type rules. Say at 6pm everyone in that area sits down to watch some Netflix. Any roaming connections could get throttled or even disconnected.

  • @dwild92

    @dwild92

    They are treating roaming connections as less priority one, it's part of their user agreement: > Service at Secondary Locations will be best effort and users may see slower speeds during times of network congestion. Obviously they aren't getting priority, that's for the people that bought the service at that location, not for the ones that bypass the waitlist. There's a finite amount of bandwidth they can provide at every location and that's a good way to handle this situation.

    I got my Starlink back in March and it's been working great. I get anywhere from 50-180Mb/s download. (It fluctuates a lot, which is to be expected with satellite.) Ping times are usually around 25-35ms. We've had about 6 devices streaming Netflix and KZread for hours, and never had any problem. It completely quit working for a little while one day, but I imagine that was network maintenance or some such. Overall, it's been great. I can finally play games online. I can download a many-gig file in less than an hour, as opposed to the several weeks it would've taken with the 4G hotspot we were using before. The price increase sucks, but it's worth it, because we simply don't have any other option. (Weirdly, my account says my bill due this month is $25. Don't know what that's about.)

    Wow... Writing this on September 21 2022. I am in Spain, I live in a rural area, and I ordered Starlink last Friday (4 business days ago) and it is arriving tomorrow. I just had to pay 390€ as a one time fee and I will be paying 70€/month for the service. Where I live I have no fiber, ADSL is rudimentary, and 4G is weak and 5G non-existent; Starlink is by far the best option. The whole ordering experience has been completely flawless and quite pleasant. It is shocking to see how bad it was, and how far Starlink has come since. I guess I will see how the product and service actually are on the practical side tomorrow. Might give an update here
