    Simulation theory is interesting as a thought experiment, but ultimately self defeating. Think about it. If this reality is indistinguishable from a simulated reality, with no way of proving either way, it simply doesn't matter which reality we're in. With no mechanism to investigate reality itself, we simply have to accept that this reality, simulation or not, is the reality we're currently in and just get on with it. We just won't ever be able to know. Rene Descartes asked a variation of this question in his Cogito with 'How do I know I exist ?' His conclusion was the famous quote: 'I think, therefore I exist'.

  • @marce11o

    @marce11o

    Yeah, its arbitrary, like any other arbitrary idea - God, the afterlife, etc. The simulation appeals to wishful thinking. It pacifies existential anxiety. So there's a motive to believe it. Its woo.

    Not quite because if you think of the universe as "Infinite" or having Infinite computational resources then anything can be possible, a simulation must have Limited computational resources. The universe will be like a box of a set size, and whats in side that box is based on the computational resources available. So if we stick around long enough we could figure out ALL THERE IS TO KNOW, "complete the game". If this is the real or "Base reality" then we can not. It's also theoretically possible to test if there is computational limits by finding out if there are limit's to the amount of different strong interactions among elementary particles.

  • @TeslaNick2

    @TeslaNick2

    8 жыл бұрын

    Distraction Gaming Reasonable argument, but in your 'complete the game' scenario, great we get to find out we're in a simulation. In your 'base reality' scenario, we still never find out either way. I would conclude from your argument we would be best to assume this reality is the base reality until proven otherwise (which would describe my position).

  • @mouthpiece200

    @mouthpiece200

    8 жыл бұрын

    Theres no reason the base reality couldn't have basically infinite computing power, allowing our reality to go on forever and yet still not be the base.

    2:36 "This (reality we are living in) FEELS real but obviously it is UNLIKELY is real..." A medium described this matrix like concept with similar terms: “Every human being senses an inner longing that goes deeper than the longings for emotional and creative fulfillment. This longing comes from SENSING that another, more fulfilling state of consciousness and a larger capacity to experience life MUST exist.”

    We should give this man all of the money out there and just let him build a perfect world. Also, the human brain hallucinates with great ease, experiments show that people who are conditioned to believe they are under going a stressful, bone piercing laser treatment, will imagine the burning pain, even when it's just a laser pointer on their skin. We humans aren't impossible to fool about what's "real" by any means. With the power of suggeation, the mind will cling to what it completely believes is "real".

    6 жыл бұрын

    He can't, because like everybody he's not enough smart to compute psychology and philosophy in his brain under the pressure of the hate and accusation of pretention. Solving the human problem (wich is mainly violence, physically or economically or any other way), is attacking the human itself by explaining him that he's dumb, and showing him the way he doesn't want to follow. I tried, all my life, since school. I only have mockers around me. Today, I'm learning terms like "spectator effect" to add some material in my explaination to describe how the fuck people were insulting me or punching me in school class, while noone was moving a finger. But only my OWN explainations that I made since 25 years, can describe the whole reality of jealousy and hate against smart individuals like me who always seen more things, understood more things, and tried to explain how to do differently but always been mocked and accused of pretention. Even love was being mocked all the time, and people saying me "pfff, you're a fool, you believe in that ?", or "you will see", or "you can't know if you love the person before fucking with her", etc. All of you, suckers, were expressing materialistic and hedonistic way of life throught sex, making "nerds" to be seen as "virgin" and finishing to be ones because of your social exclusion. So how do you want a nerd like Elon Musk, who didn't fight anything or he would have been socially excluded, to understand what he simply tried to FORGET ? Hahaha, it's a joke... So, politic is just giving to antagonistic points of view the possibility to fight each others perpetually and to make the good guy to suffer for eternity : when one guy build something interesting to solve a problem, an other douche from the "RIGHT*" political side destroys all and build a new problem. How do you even believe that politic will save the human kind ? * (in France, that's how we call the political camp who wants to make money BEFORE making social improvements, at the opposite of the LEFT side who is more progressive).

    Money is not just a number in a database, that is just how money currently is administered, but money is in fact a measure for value, and value then is a measure for both market conditions (demand/supply) which value fluctuate around the cost price of producing items/goods which then represent the amount of socialy necessary labour.

    This is actually like the movie Synecdoche where the actor's journey in creating a magnus opus blurs the line between reality and the world by populating the cast and crew with doppelgangers. Where projections of his life and people in his life were realised by the cast and crew, and new projections of him are then dealing with new projections of them and vice versa.

So, what exactly is my 'problem'? If the question put out to Mr. Money-nuts isn't answered (neural lace insertion) then you want me to come to terms with the idea that I am 1) already a robot, 2) will be a robot, or 3) will have foreign parts 'somehow' implanted in my body : . . . through the veins & arteries . . ." Not true... there have been times in my dreams when I realized I was dreaming, it always ends with me waking up... this simulation theory seems to me to be in the same line as the deist argument that there is a god watching over us which I don't believe either. Fun to talk about any of it but my money is on the fact that we are real, not simulations, there is no god or gods and this life is all we have.. I know a lot of people get a kick out of debating these issues but seeing as they can't be resolved I live my life under the assumption that I am real and better get busy living...but I do see the attraction these theories have...

    What I can’t seem to find any answers on is how us being in a simulation would affect our afterlife? If we are just characters in a simulation, would our consciousness seize to exist after death, or would it just restart & we begin again?

    I read recently that those who think very long (too long) about consciousness can easily be swayed to panpsychism and then later they go further and turn even to idealism. So a simulation or idealism seems almost that same suspicion that nothing is really what it seems. Recently someone seems to have proved that the information needed to simulate our universe would be too big, has something to do with quantum mechanica.

    I was taught from my earliest recallable memories that my shared perception of the material world, form, matter, or what I experienced via bodily senses was reality. I am now convinced the opposite is true. If I can see it, touch it, smell it or taste it, then it is merely passing illusion experienced as pleasant, unpleasant, extreme, subtle, and for any perceived amount of time in which the experience last...not comforting at all. This world does not seem to have been made for an experience of safety and comfort. Maybe there is such a place but form seems to mean limitation.

    One very interesting theory about this is the one explored in the game SOMA, where there are two scenarios of simulated reality in a near future where the Earth is uninhabitable after a meteor impact. One is about a human effort of preserving their consciousness forever through a simulated reality inside a server they want to send into space. So these survivors, at a underwater station, take brain scans of themselves and upload their current mind status into this server. In fact what happens is that, since they are actually making copies of their minds through the brain scans and not actually uploading in the strict sense, they end up with two simultaneous, independent, living consciousness of themselves, one in the physical world - their bodies - and one in the simulated reality. The result is a very - VERY - intense debate among the survivors whether the 'real' consciousness is the one that got copied into the simulation or the one still living in their bodies. The game explores a lot into this. The second scenario is about this AI responsible for running most maintenance systems inside and around the station, that after realizing the impending doom on these humans, tries as hard as it can to preserve their lives, acting independently and rogue-like and keeping these people in a state which we wouldn't exactly call 'being alive'. The AI experiments different approaches to achieve this goal and the result is twofold. First it creates a version of the simulated reality which the survivors eventually use to create their own simulated reality, secretly takes its own brain scans of the survivors, but instead of uploading copies into the simulation uploads their minds into actual robots, in the physical world, in order to 'preserve' their lives. Interestingly enough, most of these copies don't seem to realize their state, that their are not humans in the first place, and despite their obvious physical forms, they behave as if they were humans and all sorts of complications result from this. The second, at a later point, involves the AI interfering directly on their human bodies, creating some sort of parasitic, perpetual beings, these 'survivors' living now in their own distorted reality. Philosophically speaking, this game has many aspects worth consideration when we think about what defines us being what we are. Is life and consciousness only real while we have our hearts beating, or we are just as real and alive even inside a simulated reality? From the point of view proposed in SOMA it makes no difference whether we are aware of the simulation or not, it's all about being and feeling alive, no matter where or how. If you felt interested about this game you should, apart from obviously playing the game, watch the official live action shorts they've made to expend the history line, search for 'SOMA - Transmissions', well worth the time.

    Am not a genius in building structures but when he says building tunnels i gonna be a cost issue, it seems like a very big cost issue. We have to factor in that we are building tunnels for long term sustainability hence in the future, tunnels will be the means of transportation and everything. This means that we shall have large masses of the ground 'hollow' hence some unforeseen geographical challenges. Hence revolutionized architectural principals

    Scientists and mathematicians have wondered why math can explain elements of our "reality". It is quite obvious- our "reality" was designed with mathematics, with a very complex code. Physics and chemistry obey the same code. It appears that the only deviation from prescripted material is by consensus or by will. Will may override the code but in context of this reality.

    Future transportation? Imagine a 1 dimensional universe. In order to move from point A to point B, one has to move along the line. Now imagine if the line is bent such that A and B touch each other. Then one can move from A to B in a flash. Imagine a creature in that 1 dimensional universe who has a friend (god} in the 2 dimensional universe where that 1 dimensional universe is located. That creature can ask (pray) his 2 dimensional friend (god) to bend their 1 dimensional universe so he/she can magically leave point A and appear at point B instantly. Or his/her friend can get fishes and loaves at point B and give it to him/her at point A. We can extrapolate this scenario to our 3 dimensional universe. The shortest way to Alpha Centauri is to go through the 4th dimension and just magically appear there in a split of a second.

    Outside of the "laws" of science being identical to code, I believe a tangible clue is in the property we call Inertia. The change from a static mass to a dynamic mass may require a finite time interval that would signal the basic operating speed of the "computer" running our reality.

    I really like the simulation theory...We will get to a point where we can simulate complete lives, or even complete with universes ( unless we are hit by some physical bounds)...And then we will have some planets in those simulations which will have their own living organisms..which might become intelligent enough to create their own simulations and then the cycle will go on. And that is what elon is talking about. We all could just be a simulation

    I have been stuck on Elon Musk and the simulation theory or the lack there of for over a month now,I am actually very new too elon musk vidoes,ideas and the simulation theory or hypothes should I say. Now let me first say i am not the most intelligent man or the most unitelligent either. The thought of this being a simulation built by a vastly more intelligent life form then ourselves is mind blowing and life changing if it is indeed true. But the possibility of us "humans" being in a simulation is actually very high in my personal opinion,what if instead of death being the ending of the persons life,it is instead actually us waking up too what we believe is base reality or what we think it really is.

    It would only be feasible if the city hasn't been made yet, that's the trouble with the world, cities and towns ETC have just been slowly upgraded for hundreds of years, well expanded. Cities and towns basically need levelling, they need strong under ground tunnels, garbage disposal tunnels built underground, tunnels to move goods around instead of lorries, no cars? solar panels integrated. They are so inefficient, it's like using a car from 30 years ago and trying to make it great, but keeping the chasis/ structure the same. This will never happen in reality OFC unfortunately.

    That actually strongly relates to what he was saying about designing the ideal rocket as your starting point rather than trying to base your rocket design off of those that already exist. It's a matter of viewing a problem in the most simplified terms possible, finding the optimum solution to your idealized system, and then trying to apply that solution to the real world. It certainly would result in a lot of innovation, and I love that. It's an awesome way of thinking. But you're right in that reality often would interfere - for instance, when you are trying to build an optimized city, but there's already a preexisting city in your way.
