Elon Musk's NEW INSANE Motor SHOCKS The Entire Industry!

Elon Musk has JUST revealed Tesla's Next Generation Motor which has shocked the entire automotive industry. Tesla's motors are some of the most advanced and efficient in the market, with a focus on energy, efficiency, and sustainability. Their new powertrain engine is said to undercut competitors with a much cheaper design that will be 2 to 3 times less in cost. Tesla's next generation Permanent Magnet motors have completely ELIMINATED Rare Earth Metals and will reduce silicon carbide in the microchips. This is game-changing as these materials are expensive and are sourced from areas that could have environmental and social impact. Tesla's new electric motor design also uses hairpin stators which will better power the rotors, improving efficiency, heat dissipation, and power output. Elon Musk's insane drive unit is finally here and will mean GAME OVER for companies like Toyota, General Motors, and Volkswagen. #tesla #ElonMusk #electricmotors

Rare earth metals should really be called 'expensive to isolate and purify' metals. They are not rare as such - in fact they are quite abundant. It's just that they are not well concentrated in traditionally minable areas of high concentration. Also, the individual elements are often all mixed together and the extraction process is expensive. Nevertheless, if tesla has made a 'permanent magnet' out of some other material then this will make a big difference not just in the automotive industry. I wonder what it is?

But of course, now that ELON adopts it, it is HIS PERSONAL invention, it is HIS PERSONAL innovation that will revolutionize human existence. Like his rocket engines are pretty straightforward standard engines, nothing really fancy, or like his Boring Company that would revolutionize the drilling of tunnels 10 times at fast for 10% of the cost ended up buying standard boring equipment and drills tunnels just as slow and just as expensive as any other drilling company. I think it’s an oversight to say that Elon started the company. Martin, Marc, and Ian were the ones that got the company started and producing the first roadster. Elon came on board with a huge cash infusion and naturally his work has pushed the company along to where it is today ( as well as the work and genius of an incredibly talented team of engineers). It’s always a little hard to hear the people who had the vision and put in the hard work to make it an attractive investment for Elon to get involved, being overlooked.

Hairpin windings are far from a new technology I served an apprenticeship as an "Armature/Motor Winder" before progressing to engineering, one of the first rewinds I was part of the team winding was a hairpin wind & that was in 1970. All of the statements about hairpin winds are true & in the 1970 it was a very manual labour intensive process but very suitable for modem robotic manufacturing. Couple this with our modern day infinitely variable inverter drives & is a logical progression of technology.

The "back of the napkin" model on cost is exactly that. It is not precise. I spent 25 years working for a major Japanese automotive manufacturer and the math is actually pretty close, BUT it is only based on observation of vehicles' cost, and not necessarily due to any engineering or manufacturing cost targets. ICE's cost what they cost, and each engine is used in many different models at many different price points. If Musk can get a Model 3 delivered for under $30k, then consumers will move his direction in droves. He knows this, and is what is driving innovation targets. Currently, however, as is well known, Tesla is a "luxury" vehicle and is limited in its consumer acceptance. So, his value proposition is a serious one. Can you imagine a Model X at the same price point as a Honda Pilot, or a Model 3 at the same price point as a Toyota Camry? That would obviously be a major coup!

For anyone wondering what the new permanent magnets are, most likely it's Tetrateanite. Tetrateanite is a rare earth MINERAL, composed entirely of common elements, unlike rare earth magnets. So while tetrateanite rarely occurs on earth, it's quite common on asteroids where it formed over millions of years. Last year however materials scientists figured out how to create tetrateanite extremely easily and released the information to the public, allowing for the bulk manufacture of the material. The recipe is this, 49+% iron, 49+% nickel and a doping of phosphorus, pour molten mixture into a mold, and cool in the presense of a powerful magnetic field. Tetrateanite magnets are stronger then Neodymium magnets, far far cheaper, and way greener to manufacture.

Here where I live in Canada we start climbing as soon as we leave the city up the mountains with the temp below 0 and lots of snow. Tesla has about 130k employees, while toyota has 370k employees. I bet tesla has more engineers than toyota despite being half the total size. Legacy companies are all ran by business people who protect the overhead of multiple layers of managers. Tesla replaced managers with software that allows engineers to self manage everything: projects, administrative tools, purchasing tools/materials, customer feedback/returns, realtime factory line monitoring, realtime test result monitoring, realtime supplier monitoring, etc. Tesla calls it "digital self management". This means engineers make all the decisions at tesla, not a manager who doesn't understand engineering. Tesla can move way faster on anything because there aren't layers of management to hold dozens of meetings before an engineer gets to act. Instead engineers act immediately to address any issue and get to make the decisions a manager used to gatekeep.

The only reason tesla even went public is because they had no other way to raise funds after the 2008 collapse. Going public is likely elon's biggest regret. All his other companies have stayed private. I would expect tesla to only do a stock buy back if elon has worked out a way to go private but he needs there to be less shares in the market to make it work. Otherwise there are too many things for tesla to do with that cash to keep accelerating the company's mission. Mexico is now slated for up to 10billion dollars in investment. About the Hairpin windings- it doesn't seem that unique except that the process is being used to create the stator, rather than as usual in an old DC motor rotor. Watch the rebuild process of a automobile starter in India- they (under very difficult conditions) dismantle the Hairpin windings, anneal them, skillfully bend their shape, cleanup the rotor and commutator, and solder them back to the commutator. It remains to be seen if the new magnets are scalable, and that they are heat resistant enough. If so, it would reduce the cost. I don't see that happening until they have fully tested the motor under all conditions.

As far as a threat to freedom and movement, technology advancements continue to reduce cost and increase range. That's not done happening. Whereas there will be a day when it's petroleum that will be so expensive it will be only attainable by the wealthy, due to its diminishing supply and increased cost of extraction.

Putin has already made nuclear powerd ice breaker boats, so they can spend months out there searching, there are many spots where he has sent military and they are guarding the areas so common sense says hes found oil. theres more oil untapped then we know what to do with, you thinnk its supply is limited because you have been brainwashed by the Elites to pay more for less and think converting to EVs is a "must" and YES by supporting EVs you are basically supporting the banning of gasoline. you cant have it both ways sorry. you are 100% against EVs and willing to boycott them to try stop anti gasloine laws to take hold, OR you are Pro EVs helping to get ban gasoline. you might not think you are doing this but you are with your wallet

Tesla is driven by innovation. This new system is even a new vertical integration or should I say progress toward complete vertical integration. All without loosing sight sight of usefulness and affordability. I describe this process as ultimate-practical trough pure innovation or engineering unleashed from from ignorance. It is almost as if Elon already knows the estimated future.

Elon has done nothing but copied someone else’s work. Built on others improved yes original no. Ford was the first one to build everything in house from the rubber trees for the tires to the coal to power his plant. He controlled everything but the railroad for shipping and he tried to buy that.

I think tesla will still use induction motor, with little modification in the rotor design, not standard squirel cage type, just be more conductive and better cooling. The insane thing is, the rotor is water cooled, they can flow fluid to spinning part, that is a cool insane.

Elon Musk gets far more kudos than he deserves, as did Steve Jobs at Apple. The company was incorporated as Tesla Motors, Inc. on July 1, 2003, by Martin Eberhard and Marc Tarpenning. Eberhard and Tarpenning served as CEO and CFO, respectively. Eberhard said he wanted to build "a car manufacturer that is also a technology company", with its core technologies as "the battery, the computer software, and the proprietary motor". Ian Wright was Tesla's third employee, joining a few months later. In February 2004, the company raised $7.5 million in series A funding, including $6.5 million from Elon Musk, who had received $100 million from the sale of his interest in PayPal two years earlier. Musk became the chairman of the board of directors and the largest shareholder of Tesla. J. B. Straubel joined Tesla in May 2004 as chief technical officer. A lawsuit settlement agreed to by Eberhard and Tesla in September 2009 allows all five - Eberhard, Tarpenning, Wright, Musk, and Straubel - to call themselves co-founders. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tesla,_Inc.#History

The robot do such a great job of assembly, I was wondering, when the car gets older, maybe they could use robots to dis-assemble older cars, keep what works, replace what doesn't and if structurally sound, could be resold as refurbished, at a lower cost? Of course the AI would have to have the software updated. If we could harness such manufacturing efficiency to build things, why not to dis/re-assemble older models. Just daydreaming, "Don't have a cow!" (Bart Simpson)

@9:50 the claim they "are not sacrificing performance at all" is not substantiated by the logic. These are a new generation, so they can be more performant than previous designs, but still not as performant as if their own generation design had incorporated rare earth elements. I think this needs to be specifically addressed. "more performant than previous generations" is not the logical benchmark to see if including rare earths or excluding them has no impact.

The problem with ANY permanent magnet, rare or not, is the fact that it is not permanent. They all loose magnetism, as is the nature of magnets. The more you use it, the more it looses. The more it heat-up, the more it looses. To get it back, normally requires a super-high blast of EM-fields. Which is how they are created in the first place. Rare-earth magnets tend to have more power, but are also more sensitive to heat. So, going to normal magnets, will instantly offer longer life power, at the cost of slight weight increase. Adding some kind of back-EMF pulse, can provide some additional power-gains, after losses. (Like a temporary power-restoration to the magnets.) The cost is, obviously, power to do that. Every component is there to do it, within the motor itself. Ultimately, he is working towards getting these things into the mid-level consumer market, so that ALL prices can be reduced and even more parts can become "universal", or "swappable". You don't get good availability by making only specialized parts for specialized people. You make them for "the masses", and offer "upgraded parts" to the high-rollers. This places more shops in more locations, and more ways and people to fix them, everywhere.

Musk reminds me of Ford but on a much higher tech scale. to succeed you search for better ways to build and lower costs. however, Ford went bonkers in later years and the company nearly died. hope that does not happen to Musk and company. the Chinese are coming with hi tech, great design and lower prices. will dominate the market. Tesla will survive. others will not. the future is electric but with brownouts. utilities are not doing enough, now. great presentation.
