I went to McMaster University In Canada for Engineering. We had a compulsory environment and sustainability engineering course. My professor would not stop talking about the scarcity of water. She even confidently said that 'wars will be fought over water'. It's funny to look back about how I was actually paying to listen to someone spewing such nonsense, but it's not just her. I remember as early as elementary school them teaching us about how little 'freshwater' we had, only 2% is drinkable blah blah blah which is not strictly untrue... They just never tell us about desalination or any other solutions, only instilling us an irrational fear of scarcity.
@brilanto
Ай бұрын
With more utilization of solar (or wind) power the energy becomes so cheap that desalination becomes economically (and politically) feasible. Still, this time has not come yet (thanks to the fossil and nuclear lobbies). But it is a splendid (tendencially inevitable) initiative of Elon, and evidently one of the next subcompanies of Tesla... Imagine (mobile) plants at the coast even in underdevelopped deserted or island countries desalinating like oil/gas drilling platforms, even loading oil tankers on their way back.
@yvanpajevic9680
Ай бұрын
Desalination is not practical on an industrial scale. Too expensive. The key is making energy cheap. Once we can make desalination cheap, it will solve a LOT of problems....Elon is being positive (which I agree with). However NO ONE has presented a CONCRETE solution yet...not even Elon.
@CMAzeriah

@@CMAzeriah How you figure that? Solar is dirt cheap to build and maintain. You can build as small or large solar-farm as you like, and it contains no risk. It also produces cheaper electricity than nuclear. Only downside is it does not provide electricity 24/7 but batteries mitigate that. Better have a mix of nuclear and solar. Maybe in a couple of decades we can get cheap electricity from fusion... but who knows....

Though these people are correct to raise the *concern*, because without the concern, what would drive people investment into desal etc technology? That is because the UK infrastructure development has been minimal so that dividends can be paid to shareholders resulting in sewage contaminating the rainfall. Ofwat, the UK regulator, has allowed £85.2bn to be paid to investors since privatisation (according to report today from University of Greenwich). When the companies raise more money, with the pretence of building infrastructure, it gets creamed off to shareholders. Shareholders argue they will not invest in a company that does not generate returns, thereby making water and sewage companies unsuitable for privatisation. Which was exactly what was said when it occurred back in 1989. Supposedly Ofwat polices them but it is toothless.

The main problem is that for around 70 years now, the US government has confiscated any patent that could replace oil as energy source. There are around 6000 confiscated patents. Why? @Farzad Wjat do you think, should we as investors sell before the vote? And then buy the dip? I am frustrated to see, that such an awesome company like Tesla can be threatened by corporate America and its burocratic sharks. My fear is that Elon will step down as CEO when the vote is negative. And then the stock will surely hit rockbottom. Dont you think? Since I cannot vote (I contacted my bank and its definitive I cannot! I live in Switzerland LOL!) I am in a pickle. I love Eon and his simplistic was he evaluates potential. Once we know that the potential is there all we have to do is figure out how to set up the needed infrastructure. RIGHT NOW THE HOME BATTERIES DO NOT MAINTAIN THEIR POWER DENSITY AS THEY AGE, AND THE ORIGINAL ENERGY STORED DEGRADES OVER TIME. ... AND NO ONE SPEAKS TO THIS ISSUE, AND IT WILL ADD TO THE COST OVER ANY REASONALBE LONG TERM INTERVAL.

Elon is such a great, personable and intelligent communicator. Solar power is bound to gain extensive use for everything until we add fusion that will add even more possibilities. Solar has the added advantage that it can be distributed/decentralized. Thanks Farzad 🙏
Why are there so many video cuts?
It’s interesting there’s a water forum in Indonesia. Bali is overrun with plastic that leads to the oceans, seawater around beaches has E. Coli and the country has less than half its original forests left. I don’t think they’re genuinely concerned about their water.
"There are huge non climate effects of carbon dioxide which are overwhelmingly favorable which are not taken into account. To me that's the main issue that the earth is actually growing greener. This has been actually measured from satellites the whole earth is growing greener as a result of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. So it's increasing agricultural yields, it's increasing the forests, it's increasing all kinds of growth in the biological world and that's more important and more certain than the effects on climate." ~Freeman Dyson, Institute of Advanced Study in Princeton, New Jersey.
Gigawatt??? As far as I know, in close to ideal conditions, our solar pannels generate 1 KILOwatt-hour per m². Unless we somehow make them better by a couple orders of magnitude, his rough estimate is way off. Also, they need maintenance and need to be replaced every couple of decades.

I’ve been wondering exactly this, why don’t we have more desalinization plants in arid places by the coast. Instead of having to pipe the water from the places where it rains more, why if you’re in the coast and have all that sea water available aren’t governments investing more on desalinization plants
We also have to stop wasting water. We use a lot of water when we shower and when we flush a toilet. There should be a sure way to purify that water by a series of evaporations and filters.

It's really expensive to desalinate. Where do you get the idea that it isn't? Whether it is by reverse osmosis or distillation, it takes lots of energy. In the case of desalination, it takes lots of energy and materials. What gives you the idea that it isn't expensive.

Forests have a good relationship with water quality, knowing how to manage a forest and plants, with the right methods, can use plant water as an excellent nutrient for the body
Wen some one says 70% water they are couting with the land under the water?
PFAS and micro-plastics in the water will also have to be dealt with. Solar + batteries + elevated storage/gravity recovery would be an unstoppable combination.
Atmospheric Water Generation (Condensation Harvesting) powered by solar will also likely play a role in regions remote from oceans, rivers, lakes, streams, and groundwater.
Sounds like me making up shit in an interview
Rando asks water questions, Elon says something about Solar.
Bali ?! Gosh, so much happen there...
No way, building water infrastructure removes water scarcity
The underutilized and/or wated significant amount of solar energy is heat. Storing it for reuse will solve many problems.
Solar is awesome in concept but I'm still concerned about the various factors that impede the power collection. Dirt / sand blowing onto and covering the panels, snow in northern and southern regions, Hail storms that have destroyed whole fields of panels, the panels that were floating off the coast (in Dubai i think?) were all blown into the shore and many were destroyed. There's a few things i think need to be sorted out but after that the main thing, and probably even more important technology that needs to be sorted out is Power Storage / Battery Technology. Solar and wind power generation is great but they are intermittent and so you need to store power somehow in the system to compensate for when the power generation is low or 0.
can you brief us on how you measured that ? I’ll bet you cant
Aptera is doing this now with a solar ev they're launching next year! The future is solar energy as we progress towards a type 1 civilization. Keep the optimism!
