I think I know what happened to the cake. When you put the baking soda, which was your leavening agent for the cake, into the hot honey and butter mixture, it foamed up and you killed the baking soda leavening power. So the cake didn’t rise. When I did bake cakes when my kids were little it wasn't the cake flavor that was so good it was artistic. I made characters such as blue clues , Clifford the big red dog, trains, power rangers. The cakes were beautiful, but I had to add extra oil to the recipe to make them easier to shape, so the taste was okay but they looked beautiful.
