The Meaning of the song: the singer is waiting for his woman on the other end of the telephone to pick up the line and he's expressing his loneliness as he waits. The way the song begins "Hello. How are you?" line make it clear that he is on the telephone waiting for an answer. The transition into the full stereo effect on the "lonely, lonely, lonely, lonely, lonely nights" line expresses the sadness and loneliness of the song. The next line, "that's what I'd say" underscores that the song's listener (you) has just been listening to the sad telephone call and the singer's deep pain. the entire song occurs while the singer is on the line, waiting for the line to be picked up. There is remarkable feeling to the song, as if the caller is waiting and waiting for an answer while pouring out the pain and loneliness that he is feeling.

Nice comment, Whitney, but I don't think he's talking to us, he's talking to himself--and at one point, the operator, asking her if she could let it ring longer.

E.L.O. stands for Electric Light Orchestra. Jeff Lynne who is the main singer is a genius and is also a great producer. He comes from my home city of Birmingham, UK and E.L.O. have loads of great songs. One of my favourites is 'All Over The World' which makes you want to dance and sing. Jeff Lynne was also a member of a super group called 'The Travelling Willburys' with George Harrison (The Beatles), Roy Orbison, Bob Dylan and Tom Petty.

Huge band when I grew up in Ireland mid 70s . Their music wasn’t totally MS at the time . Lead singer has written many hit songs for other artists which I didn’t know until recently. Early , Early ELO had a different style music to what became their signature sound . Orchestral backing and Jeff Lynne’s high pure singing voice . I regards his voice as one of the finest in pop music . He still performs in his mid 70s . And ELO had a Wembley London concert where his voice even at 70 was better in than his debut album with Telephone Line .

I was born in 1971. ELO is one of those bands that I heard in the car with my mom and generally on radio as one exists in a grown up world. You hear what the adults around you are listening to. There are a few ELO songs that I wouldn't want to exist on this Earth without knowing. Telephone Line is one of those songs. It is beautiful. It is a gift.

This song was written in the 1970's , some 30 years before modern cell phones existed. Telephones in those days were all connected by a line (electical wire) and had an operator that could assist you with contacting a person on the other end of the phone. Also, if you were not near the phone when someone tried to call you, you would never had known that they tried to call you.😢😮

Electric Light Orchestra (ELO). Jeff Lynn is the singer. Very underrated voice. Great band. I honestly think the video performance detracts from the recorded song. Try listening to the music (no video) and follow along with the Lyrics: Hello, how are you? Have you been alright through all those lonely, lonely, lonely, lonely Lonely nights? That's what I'd say I'd tell you everything if you'd pick up that telephone Yeah, yeah, yeah Hey, how ya feelin'? Are you still the same? Don't you realise the things we did, we did Were all for real? Not a dream I just can't believe they've all faded out of view Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah Ooh-woo-ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh Doo-wop, doo-be-doo-doo-wop, doo-wah, doo-lang Blue days, black nights, doo-wah, doo-lang I look into the sky (the love you need ain't gonna see you through) And I wonder why (the little things you planned ain't coming true) Oh, oh, telephone line, give me some time I'm living in twilight Oh, oh, telephone line, give me some time I'm living in twilight Okay, so no one's answering Well, can't you just let it ring a little longer, longer, longer? Oh I'll just sit tight, in shadows of the night Let it ring forevermore, oh-whoa Yeah, yeah, yeah Doo-wop, doo-be-doo-doo-wop, doo-wah, doo-lang Blue days, black nights, doo-wah, doo-lang I look into the sky (the love you need ain't gonna see you through) And I wonder why (the little things you planned ain't coming true) Oh, oh, telephone line, give me some time I'm living in twilight Oh, oh, telephone line, give me some time I'm living in twilight Oh, oh, telephone line, give me some time I'm living in twilight Oh, oh, telephone line, give me some time I'm living in twilight

@@whitneyestate1402 Whitney, his name is spelled, Lynne, not, Lynn. However, I do agree with you that the video detracts from the song, that it's far better to just listen to it whilst staring at a photo of the album cover. Or a lyrics video, like you said, but I think that can detract from appreciating the music, as well. Maybe because English is not their first language, I would make an exception.

ELO is short for Electric Light Orchestra. Its so named because of the cellos and violins which no other band featured at the time. The telephone line is a reference to actual wires that made up the telephone system in the 70's when this was written. There was no wireless technology. Back then when we called someone it rang until you stopped if no one answered. There was no voicemail or call forwarding. For another really fun ELO try Mr. Blue Sky.

The premise of the song was the distance between the lead singer Jeff Lynne and his wife while the group was on tour or recording an album in another place and they were apart from each other. You have to remember that when they recorded this song in the mid 1970's that answering machines or voice mail was not widely available. It was common that when you called someone that if no one was home, the phone would just continue to ring, and you would hope that someone answered. I'm old enough that I remember that time, and trying to call someone to express my feelings or apologize for a wrong doing and hoping that the person on the other end would answer.

You should see these 2 ELO self titled megafans trying to figure out what "turned to stone when you are gone" means and confidently decided its a compliment like she's a statue! Back in the day, we didn't have cell phones...we had telephone lines. So it was fairly common to refer to your telephone line, kind of like just saying someone's cell wasn't answering or your cell phone call could not get thru, etc. We also had party lines, which were shared telephone lines and sometimes you could inadvertently pick up someone else's conversation on the telephone. We weren't able to direct dial long distance calls even within in the US, we had to dial 0 for the operator and ask her to make the call for us.

In fact, ELO is Jeff Lynne. He writes all the songs, he sings all the songs, he produce all the songs and he is a multi-instrumentalist. Since 2014 he makes music under the name "Jeff Lynne's ELO". And on his new records he does nearly everything on his own. In 2014 he and his new formed Band played in front of 50.000 people in London's Hyde Park and in 2017 he played in London's Wembley Stadium in front of 62.000 people (have a look on KZread). And his voice seems getting better in his old days. A musical genius, in a row with Paul McCartney and Brian Wilson.

First off, I love your reaction and emotions. I grew up in Miami and was raised on classic rock n roll in the 70’s and 80’s. What I love about “Telephone Line” is this song could never be written today. Beyond Jeff Lynn’s musical genius, the nostalgic music and lyrics hit particularly hard when he says to the operator “can you just let it ring a little longer, longer”. In the 1970’s there was no answering machine or voicemail, cellphones. No social media to check the love of your life who just broke up with you is on vacation or just got back. If you weren’t home, your option was to run to a pay phone and put some dimes and nickels in it and call where? If the person disconnected or changed their home phone number it was a hopeless situation. When someone broke up with you back in the 70’s, they would get in a taxi and you would never see them again. No one to text 5 mins later I’m sorry. Within a week they could have moved to the other side of the world and you’d never know. That’s what makes this song and lyrics so heartbreaking back in the day and why songs like Telephone Line can’t be written anymore with this sort of nostalgia. Keep up the amazing reactions!

@@itsmira-j You are, indeed. ELO had more Top 40 Hits in the US and UK combined during their 15-year career from 1972-1986, than ANY OTHER BAND in the world over that same span! I think your next ELO song should be, *"Evil Woman".* As I said in a previous comment, do not use music videos, they detract from the song. Just use the photo of the album cover (Face The Music) that's in the thumbnail for the song. Be sure to use that link, because others cut the song short. The image on the Face The Music album cover is of an electric chair....that's the one you want.

Way too many bands who at least DO sing live and not give you lip sync for your money, can't say the same, ESPECIALLY 50+ years later! You are most definitely in for a treat and what the heck, you can't go wrong with "Evil Woman", there's a reason it is on my 'off the top of my head ELO starter songs' 😉

@@Chiari_Queen_T I think reactors should always react to the studio version of a song first. And then for those songs they really love and want to see them performed live, do a separate reaction another day to the song played live. So maybe after they react to the studio version of, *"Evil Woman",* they can react to the killer 2017 Wembley live performance of the song? ps~I saw them live in '78, loved it!

The song is about a guy who is trying to contact the girl he loves who has moved... She has decided not to pick up the phone or she has given him a false phone number.. Either way the song is about the loss of love and the devastation caused.. This same group later did another song with a the same theme but making it more clear.. The other song is called ""Calling America"" if you listen to it you will be able to connect the two songs without any trouble.. here it is... kzread.info/dash/bejne/rIFosdGTqtW8kaw.html

.................."TELEPHONE LINE" ........{Electric Light Orchestra Lyrics} Hello! How are you? Have you been alright through all those lonely, lonely, lonely, lonely Lonely nights? That's what I'd say I'd tell you everything if you'd pick up that telephone Yeah, yeah, yeah Hey! How you feelin'? Are you still the same? Don't you realise the things we did, we did Were all for real, not a dream? I just can't believe they've all faded out of view Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, ooh-ooh Doo-wop, do-be-doo-doo-wop, doo-wah, doo-lang Blue days, black nights, doo-wah, doo-lang I look into the sky (The love you need ain't gonna see you through) And I wonder why (The little things you planned ain't coming true) Oh, oh, telephone line, give me some time I'm living in twilight Oh, oh, telephone line, give me some time I'm living in twilight Okay, so no one's answering Well, can't you just let it ring a little longer, longer, longer? Oh I'll just sit tight through shadows of the night Let it ring forevermore Yeah, yeah, yeah Doo-wop, doo-be-doo-doo-wop, doo-wah, doo-lang Blue days, black nights, doo-wah, doo-lang I look into the sky (The love you need ain't gonna see you through) And I wonder why (The little things you planned ain't coming true) Oh, oh, telephone line, give me some time I'm living in twilight Oh, oh, telephone line, give me some time I'm living in twilight Oh, oh, telephone line, give me some time I'm living in twilight Oh, oh, telephone line, give me some time I'm living in twilight

ItsMira-J Sounds a bit dated, remember this song came first out in 1977. Listen and react to the live concert version from Wembley arena 2017 as ELO are a great live band with much focus on a great light show.

I thought he is ringing his ex wanting to let her know he misses her and is lonely and wants to get back with her ,he knows that she probably doesn’t .She isn’t answering the phone so possibly is dodging him ,but as long as the phone keeps ringing he’s still has hope for getting back with her ,opposed to a probable hard no if she answers .

Hadn't heard this song since my childhood. First time I heard it was in my uncle's '68 Camareo on a green 8 track tape with several other artists on it. Crosby, Stills and Nash's 'Our House, Heart's 'Barracuda'; America's 'Horse with no Name. Sometimes, I miss those care free days, not to mention the variety of music then. 'Don't Bring me Down' was a huge hit for ELO. For a fun quirky song check out BOC's abbreviations for Blue Oyster Cult 'Godzzila' Unfortunately, there was another group called Blue Oyster Cult, which had a similar vocal harmonies. . 😂😂😂😂

The blank, emotionless reaction to this song betrays your lack of musicality. I’m sorry, but quality music of this style is just not for you. Maybe concentrate on music more suited to your own taste.

@@itsmira-j I give you the opportunity to prove otherwise of course, but I’m just saying it as I see it. During the song, there is virtually no reaction. I understand that music released recently has no emotional element for the most part and that as a result, young people are unfamiliar with emotional music as a result. I had no intention to disrespect or malign you but the dead-pan reaction leads me to the conclusion that you have no innate musical appreciation.

@@itsmira-j OK so your initial reaction to a song is to absorb it dispassionately. How compelling do you imagine that is to the viewer? Reaction videos are successful because viewers see an emotional connection to music that they appreciate at a deep level. Basically, if you want to make this a successful venture, you need to display genuine appreciation for the music. It needs to be obvious to the viewer (faking it will not work of course, unless you are very convincing). I wish you luck.
