John Hunt Morgan's men took down Union flags from homes and businesses during a raid in Lexington, including this one. The Lexington Observer and Reporter wrote on November 22, 1862, that "an estimable young lady of our city ...Miss Ella Bishop, ...snatched from their grasp a beautiful flag, ...held on to it in defiance of their efforts to get it from her until their departure."
