Eliud Kipchoge is a Kenyan long distance runner, and the 2016 Olympic marathon gold medallist. He has been described as “the greatest marathoner of the modern era”.
He came to prominence in 2003 by winning the junior race at the IAAF World Cross Country Championships, setting a world junior record over 5000 metres on the track and then becoming world champion at the 2003 World Championships in Athletics. An Olympic 5000 m bronze for Kenya followed at the 2004 Athens Olympics and he took another bronze at the 2006 IAAF World Indoor Championships.
A series of silver medals came, starting at the 2007 World Championships in Athletics before another runner-up placing at the 2008 Summer Olympics. He was fifth at the 2009 World Championships but again reached the podium at the 2010 Commonwealth Games; he was second behind Moses Kipsiro in the 5000 metres. He has won four medals at editions of the annual IAAF World Athletics Final and is a five-time 5000 m finalist at the World Championships.
His 3000 metres best of 7:27.66 ranks him as the 12th fastest at the distance ever and his 5000 m best of 12:46.53 makes him the fourth fastest ever in the event.
David Bedford OBE is an English former long-distance runner, whose athletic career spanned the early 1970s. Post retirement he served as race director of the London Marathon until 2012, and is the Chairman of the IAAF Road Running Commission (since 2012), as well as sitting on the IAAF Cross Country Committee as the UK Athletics elected representative.
Bedford held the 10,000 metres world record, improving it by 7.6 seconds with his time of 27 minutes 30.80 seconds in 1973. He also held the British records for 3000 m steeplechase and 5000 metres. He usually ran in distinctive red socks, which later led to a well publicised dispute about the use of similarly attired runners in advertisements.

I met Kipchoge at a cafe in Nairobi a week after the Berlin Marathon shoe incident and he was waiting to get his US visa to go see Nike in the US about the defective shoes. Nike was in a panic and had summoned him. This man is a special human being, humble and modest to the core. I am honored to have met the only human on this earth who has run the times he has. I was utterly humbled in his presence. A truly great man with an amazing energy and presence.

I agree, i think it has to do with the extreme patience required in running 20 miles all the time and not going too fast in the beginning. a lot less patience required in running 400m repeats for 5,000m training. The gratification also comes in smaller quantities as you can race 5,000m a lot more frequently than the marathon
