Elitewheels DRIVE SIX Long-Term Review

About Elitewheels:
"Since 2013, Elitewheels has focused on the design and production of lightweight carbon fiber bicycle wheels. As we manufacture the wheels in our own factory, we have no need to outsource production. Because of this, we have more control over production and quality control. This allows us to adapt very quickly to an ever-changing market and better provide to the needs of our customers. Our goal is to change the way you think about carbon bike wheels by delivering premium products at radically fair prices." - elite-wheels.com
DRIVE SIX:
"With full carbon spokes, DRIVE SIX wheels provide more direct power transmission. In order to adapt the wheels to more complex road conditions, every detail has been optimized."
In this video, JOM Of the Gravel Cyclist crew provides a long-term review of the Elite Wheels Drive Six wheelset. Tech specs, tyre inflation, rim measurement, and the ride / review experience are covered, and more.

Continued from above:
"DRIVE SIX has stunning looks and great aerodynamic styling. One-piece design with 6 carbon spokes increases rigidity and power transfer values. Carbon spokes transmit power more directly than steel spokes, so less force is needed when climbing and accelerating. Silver decals with hand-stacked marbling set the DRIVE SIX wheels apart."
"With its hookless full carbon and tubeless ready rim, DRIVE SIX is compatible with 700*28C-700*50C tires."
Gravel Hub:
"The hubs of DRIVE SIX is made of 7075 aluminum alloy material. The freehub is designed with a ratchet mechanism and comes as standard with 36 teeth. DRIVE SIX gravel version comes standard with a center lock braking system."

Thank JOM. The shape reminds me of the Skyway Tuff wheels I had on my old BMX bike as a kid.
I ended up buying these and so far so good. No weird whooshing noises. They sound pretty normal and the rear hub isn't too loud. Pretty quiet actually. They're decently light and are a good fast wheel set. IMHO, at a standstill they kind of look chunky and slow but they're absolutely not. I wanted something that looked a bit different for my new wheel set and they definitely fit that description. Lots of good comments from my riding buddies and everyone thinks they look different but cool. Job done!

Loved that little curly haired bugger in the General madness. So funny.
Great, great review. I think I'll get some... my only "quibble" is that the spokes themselves don't seem to be aerodynamic in the direction of travel, and appear squared off perpendicular to rotation. But still a very great review. Thanks.

Hello Dave, no idea how these wheels perform in a wind tunnel, would be interesting to know for sure.
I like those wheels and was considering them. But, then I bought a Cannondale.
Fantastic review, love the detail. You mention plans to run these with 32mm road tyres further up the comments. I am considering similar, but a little weary of the hookless setup. I'd be interested in your experience so far, if you've any observations (good or bad) to share.

They work well with 32mm but you have to keep the pressure low. I ride them low 40 psi, which is perfect for my body weight, no problems. If you have Instagram, here is a link to a reel I recorded riding the wheels with 32mm Goodyear Eagle F1 tyres - instagram.com/reel/C3QaJxkRlMT/?igsh=MXhhZjg0Nmc5NjVtNQ==
Main question for me, can you combine their 16:54 road levers with their MTB derailleur to setup 1x, managing 48 x 10-50 (like SRAM)

I believe the hubs are sourced from a third party such as novatec powerway or bitex.
Hi, I appreciate the review, as Elite themselves have not been able to provide me with any customer service questions- whatsoever. Big disappointment, and makes be concerned about a response from them about my warranty, if needed. But I do like the wheels, especially considering that the price seems fair. There is something else that I find a little odd....you are only one of a couple of reviews of this wheel that I can find, I wonder why that is? Also, you mentioned that you feel that a 28" tire may be too small for the wheel, which is what many road bikes would use. Since you did this review on the bigger gravel bike tire, can you show us a small video of the same wheels with 28x700c tires being mounted on them, and let us know about the ride climbing a steep hill, and a nice, fast descend? If not, I completely understand....this is not your responsibility, I don't know why Elite themselves don't have any good information out on this wheel for us to see, and be able to decide on. But the weight capacity claim of 285 pounds on a 1450 gram wheel at $1299 minus 15% with a 3 year warranty sounds pretty good, just would like more roadbike related drive 6 wheel information. Thank you....

This review was on gravel roads, however, I am going to roll them soon with 700c x 32 Goodyear Eagle F1's as I showed inflating in the video. I think they will be pretty sweet for road riding, but keep in mind, they are a hookless rim, which isn't for everyone.

Hello, thank you for the review. In about a week I will have my Drive six wheels on my Basso Palta bike. I have a Continental GP5000 32mm is it good with this wide wheels? Because a one bike racer told me it's too wide on a 32mm tires, it's a dangerous solution. So I'm a little scared. You don´t show ride on 32mm. Thank you for your answer.

Hello, I have ridden 700c x 32mm on these wheels since this review, but be careful of your tyre pressure. These wheels are hookless, and I am not a fan of riding road tyres on hookless rims, due to the higher pressures involved.

Hi JOM - I'm just about to pull the trigger on a purchase of these wheels to be an all-around wheelset to go on my Trek Domane Gen 4 (bought that as my new "unicorn" "do-it-all bike" on your recommendation last week) ;-) I like the unique look of them. Pretty cool looking actually. So, what do these wheels sound like when riding? I had a set of Spinergys way back in the day and those big solid spokes made quite a unique whirring sound at speed. Do tell...

Hello there, I tried to record this but wind noise prevented that. From time to time, you may hear a low volume helicopter type sound, perhaps in a cross wind, but generally, they are pretty quiet in my experience. Quieter than Spinergy Rev-X (I still have a functioning set), and older tech Corima 4-spoke wheels. Don't forget to use my coupon code if you decide to buy yourself a set.

How do these wheels perform as road wheels?

Very well, but they are hookless, so that means keep the pressure down. I have ridden them many times with Goodyear Eagle F1 tubeless in 700c x 32mm. Off the top of my head, low to mid 40's psi has been perfect for me.

@DaveCM

They are pretty light for the price and given how wide they are. They are at a very competitive weight. Not to mention a gravel wheel that is robust.
@glennoc8585
Жыл бұрын
Tbh I thought the weight was pretty good considering the 5 or 6 spoke wheels are never really lighter than 1400g in a wide format. I had tuffs on my box as a kid and the benefits of not truing wheels was hard to beat. I'd definitely consider these wheels for a gravel or mtb build.
Aren´t they too stiff for gravel? I am considering buying them but concerned about they can feel 'unconfortable'
@GravelCyclist
Жыл бұрын
I spoke about this in the review, no. Set your tyre pressure for your body weight, they were quite fine, IMHO. I see too many riders with over-inflated tyres, and then squawking about their harsh riding wheels or bike. Pneumatic suspension / tyre pressure, the biggest factor to a comfy ride, and in many cases, traction.
