@glenvalley4326 Great uncle Ski was a Wehrmacht soldier in the east, early in the war and into Russia in 1942. He went to Belgium in 1944 and to many German cities and villages. He and his friends surrendered after a brief fight with the British and was still found out to have been in the east. The Germans were good record makers. Intelligence was easy to confirm the locations of the mechanized infantrymen during the war. He was given to the Russian as they demanded all living soldiers had a debt to pay. He was tried and convicted of invading the motherland and stealing chickens and rye and sent to work camps for 6 years. He was repatriated in 1951 making him lucky man. He was able to be sponsored by our American family and lived in Connecticut until 1985. That being said just because Wehrmacht and SS made it to the west was no guarantee you would not be shot, beaten to death, or starved after it ended.

@@shawnamericanrebel5676 They actually held out in a tiny pocket in Normandy after the allies already had taken almost all of France, also, while, yes, the 82nd took 47% casualties, and the up of 9,000 casualties, the German Fallshirmjäger took 100% casualties, as they almost never got new troops, because Hitler viewed them as useless. And yes, the American airborne divisions did have a difficult time, but the fallshirmjäger didn't go through 1-10th as tough of a time as the 82nd and 101st. If anything, they went through a harder time, for example, in the battle of Crete, they took 6,000+ Deaths, also, in France 121,593 enlisted men and 2,827 officers were their total casualties. Also, in Crete, they had to land in dense forests, where most of them were caught in the trees and died. In France the Allies landed in fields... Also, they didn't get their "A$$ Kicked by the U.S. ARMY" if anything, it was the other way around, in 1944 a German Fallshirmjager (Paratrooper) division fought of almost an ENTIRE CORPS of British and American soldiers. While being extremely outgunned, and, as I've said, outmanned, and they didn't surrender either, eventually the German high command ordered them back, but the American operation (Not D-day, D-Day was very much a win.) was still technically a failure. People of all sides of the war need to be respected. Most German soldiers just joined to protect their country and family, or, as what actually happened to most, were conscripted.

My great great Grand Pop fought against both the Fallschirmjäger, and the Leibstandarte [LSSAH] in the battle of Crete. Pop always was very clear that these two German fighting formations were the most brilliant and ferocious he has ever gone up against, and he was really up against the very best. One other point Pop always says is the LSSAH and the Fallschirmjäger treated Allied POWs as they were meant to be treated, with respect, admiration and according to ROE's in theatre. The Germans were really quite innovative with respect to a wide range of in theatre developments in terms of a tactical level, but also with respect to their sub/machine guns, their use of cams, which as far as I know started with the Spanish Civil War. The Paratroop element arguably set the gold standard that was to come especially for the US and UK. And they could fight hard too, arguably on a par with the elite Waffen SS Divisions like Leibstandarte and Das Reich. Rescuing 'Il Duce' thanks to the brilliant Otto Skorzeny as leader was one of the greatest examples of their work in modern war time. The modern German army, although various government's/the left have tried and succeeded up to a certain limit to remove any and all physical NSDAP symbols and references to some of Germany's greatest fighters on land, sea, and air, but there is a heavy WW2 presence in terms of framed pictures and history taught in officer schools. Also memorabilia that is kept within afore noted military barracks. And the same cap patch has been retained since the reformation of the post war German armed forces, and then merging with the East German Armed Forces, however obviously the German flag replaced the swastika. The German Paratroopers in just my opinion don't receive the credit, the respect they well over due and then some. Elite fighters that revolutionised fighting in theatre tactics. And could also climb/fight in mountain terrain.

Johnny Vaught I PCS'ed to the Berlin Brigade from Ft. Bragg as many airborne troopers did in the mid 80's. We were scheduled to make a few jumps with a German airborne unit in West Germany in order to earn a set of Fallschirmjaeger wings. For some reason it never happened so we were given the chance to earn the German marksmanship badge (Schutzenschnur ??) which was a cool looking consolation prize.

Sure did! The Russians tried admirably during that time as well; didn't do so hot. The US KICKED ASS in that area with General Bill Lee developing the Army Airborne doctrine in the late 1930's. From the WW2 combat experience after jumping, often spread out and alone in small groups, emerged the "Rule of the LGOP'S": Little Groups Of Paratroopers. Small bands of young American soldiers, pissed off, well trained, armed to the teeth and lacking adult supervision taking war to the enemy. Airborne All The Way!

Now Prussia, Gdansk, etc. is owned by Poland and they deserved that after loosing millions of millions of innocent people because of actions of your German army, who only could fight versus weak and unarmed people and countries. Netherlands was a weak defended country. There is nothing brave in killing innocent people or an army which is 10x smaller than yours.. When the German army after ruining 10x weaker Poland, Netherlands and other countries, met the US Army and then Soviet Army, who had the same weaponry and tactics, they lost. No it didn't. The Germans had allies plus they plundered every single nation they occupied and they got beaten by UK, US and mainly USSR but sure. Keep living your wannabe nazi dream that Germany alone fought against the whole universe.

I am fascinated by the German army. They're seem to be very disciplined and well trained soldiers. Unfortunately their leaders lead them in a wrong command and result in defeat. I admired the WW2 German soldiers!

what blows my mind is that they jump without no shoulder risers, so zero ability to steer and you basically fall flat on your damn face because the point of attachment to the harness. and here i am bitching about the t-10 and t-11 chutes. also they only jumped with pistols and had to retrieve their equipment from canisters. Mad men
