Elite Dangerous | Dry Commentary | Paid Ships, Prebuilds, and Perverse Incentives

Ойындар

Frontier Developments recently announced that they would begin selling early access to new ships, and instant outfitting packages that players can buy to jump directly into high level activities. This presents an opportunity to look at their plans, and make some suggestions about other ways that Elite Dangerous can generate revenue that avoid direct impact to the play space.
We should definitely and respectfully let them know when we don’t like something, and more importantly, vote with our wallets when they don’t listen. What is happening to elite is not a crisis, but time will tell if these decisions bear good fruit.

I think for E.D. selling new ships like S.C. is a good ideal, because this should help them in making missions and add new ideals for game play! We all know that any business needs to have in coming money to stay alive and I don't have a problem helping E.D. in this way as long as I can get something real good in return! 😮

That was the most rational analysis of the situation i've seen on youtube yet. Personally, i would consider this move evil only if the game was just released and all players would be starting from zero, then buying a pre-build ship would provide them competitive advantage and could be considered "pay to win". But since 90% of existing players have already everything fully engineered, this is more like "pay to catch up" which is much less evil. As for the monetization, i think the best solution is to simply sell new packages of new gameplay and content. If they made for example a Ship Interiors DLC, it would be win-win for both sides.

Thank you for your insightful video and the thoughtful discussion it prompted. It's refreshing to encounter discourse that approaches the issue from a strategic perspective. I've noticed that some content creators tend to shift the goalposts, deflect arguments, and focus on less substantive aspects, which can detract from meaningful dialogue. I wanted to bring to your attention a matter that may be of interest. There appears to be a concern regarding the interaction between free rebuy mechanics and premium ammunition within the game. This phenomenon, commonly referred to as "tactical reload" or "death reload," results in premium ammunition being replenished at no cost upon player death, effectively perpetuating an unlimited supply of premium ammo for pre-fitted ships. Given the potential impact on gameplay balance, it may be beneficial for the development team to explore possible solutions or adjustments to address this issue. Your consideration of this matter would be greatly appreciated.

I've partly addressed this issue with this "Ideal Elite" video: kzread.info/dash/bejne/go513K2upJCrdM4.htmlsi=ZrPVqaM37ojqI_EB These videos deal with the support economy system from which ammunition, hull repair, and fuel prices are derived. The tactical reload bug is a really bad exploit when dealing with PVP encounters, especially when opponents are flying smaller cheaper ships. Most people taking advantage are using it for PVE, but the initial materials expense is high enough that only advanced players can take advantage in a really abusive way. If Frontier ever gave us a PVP focused prebuild this could be a problem, but it would be no worse than using an event awarded ship for the same purpose. I don't think the Fer De Lance has ever been as an award, but the Alliance ships and Federal Dropships have. I don't think there is much risk for abuse overall, at least, not in a way that would break the game worse than it can already be broken. Regardless, this bug should be patched to close the loop. If I ever see it on the issue tracker, I'll give it a vote. It would present an excellent opportunity to highlight issues with the support economy overall.

New ships with Interiors. Interiors only accessible while landed, or during SC. I'd buy that.

I am happy with the current proposed changes. I am a little concerned that there is talk of making Power Play more integral and only in Open. Open is my default but I have no interest in PvP combat. The ability to switch to my Sqn Private Group in CG systems and Titan Systems when they are full of gankers is valued.

Haven't played in years. Just gettting back into the tutorial now. That beeing said 'gankers' felt to me like the only real threat and the one or 2 times I came across one I welcomed them. (Of course I lost after mere seconds, but it's nothing you can't compensate)

what you will realise, once more people play in open: most people arent gankers. the community seems like it, because everyone is afraid of the few that lurk in deciat and the starter zone, therefore, only the gankers remain in open. populate space again! players unite!

I’m a 2016 starter, at that time I bought elite, star citizen and no mans sky…elite was by far a my type of space sim that fed my gaming needs. At the time I made the engineering grind part of the game play loop, everything had to be ‘A’ class and level 5 engineered . It was a time where owning a cutter or anaconda took around a year or more to gain both the rep and credits . It was a real achievement, there’s the issue right there…unless you’re hooked into the thargoid narrative which I’m not, there is little to actually achieve . After 8 years and 10’s of 000 hours with 34 ships a fleet carrier and approximately 40bn in credits with nothing to spend it on. I would love to stay in the game and play daily, but it’s got stale, no new mission types for years, no new features or mechanics for years, again unless it’s thargoid driven. No new ships for years either. Now Im realising why…they’ve probably always intended this new business model. The only way I can see my spending real money for in game stuff other than cosmetics is if they include Odessey suit and weapon upgrades. Lastly, I used to play in open, until the cheaters found their way into the game using mods and or trainers , and fdev never fixed multiplayer to a level where we the players could actually have the kind of space battles they so dramatically and cinematically sold it when they were enticing the console players. Sadly fdev have either failed or messed up every release or update I’ve known since 2016. It’s not surprising share values have crashed, nor surprising that they need a new business model to survive. ..let’s hope they get it right…interesting commentary thanks for sharing your thoughts on this.

I'd buy the opprotunity to name a planet or system, and have an arx subscription for a warehouse on a station

An arx sub for a (stationary) warehouse is an interesting idea. It would give folks who haven't finished the FC grind a way to store stuff (like eng unlocks), and as long as it was stationary, wouldn't constitute a definitive advantage over FCs. I'd possibly even use it in tandem with the FC, if only to briefly store items while switching to a ship with no cargo to scout markets and stuff while away from my FC.

i think what they are doing is clever, this is not pay to win despite what people think, buying gear that is available through normal game play does not give any advantage to players, allowing players who would not join elite due to the work needed to build ships to get ahead a bit could bring in these new players.

  • @adrianwilliams6577

All I do is drop goods to stations, same with community goals. The wait to get access to the good ships without ARX will be a long one, horrendously more so for those wanting a better Cutter without spending real cash.

TBH.. ive been expecting F-Dev to stop sales and announce the closure of servers. For 10 years they have kept servers running, paid staff and made expansions from the sales of the game and expansions with a little help from selling arx. I think their current approach at trying to keep the servers running, make a few dollars and keep the game being developed is a much better way than other companies have and would do it. Nothing they are selling is 'Mandatory' or overpowered. Everything can / will be able to be bought for in came currency. The Python mk2 will be available to those that dont want to wait as an 'early access' ship. Should they have release the 4 new ships they have talked about as a type of 'upgrade pack' like some companies do? so you have to pay for the pack before you can have access to the ships? The way they have done it is voluntary. I bought this game in 2015. I have since spent money a total of twice. Horizons and Odyssey. Everyone that already had Horizons got what could have been sold as an expansion by itself, Beyond, for free. No other game i have has lasted this long for such a small outlay of real life money and no continued monthly payments. Anyways.. i dont understand why F=Dev get so much hate. Im sure they do value constructive criticism and fresh ideas though. They provide a service Its up to you if you use it or not. Just MY opinion. Youre welcome to have your own.. we all have the right to agree or disagree.

They are not "Automatic Field Maintenance Units" and they never were. They are "Auto Field Maintenance Units". The operative word (Auto), presumably short for Autonomous-meaning you are able to repair your own ship. FDEV never said or intended them to be 'automatic'.

As long as you can get everything without paying, there is nothing wrong with having ALL ships be available for a price... people have been bitching about engineering grind for a decade... now they say they will allow you to bypass the grind and everyone is still bitching... lol
