Às vezes, as pessoas não entendem a forma de interpretação de Elis, principalmente quando se trata de canções de protesto, porque tem que compreender o contexto social-político daquele momento, bem como as emoções que o artista sentia vivendo aquele momento. A Elis tinha se enrolado na bandeira no Festival de Montreux e quando voltou o Henfil ficou putíssimo com ela por isso, ele perguntou se ela não tinha noção do que estava acontecendo, dos desaparecidos, dos exilados, dos torturados. Ela, então, pediu pro Aldir Blanc uma música que falasse de tudo isso mas que acenasse uma esperança. Quando ela foi apresentar a música pela primeira vez, chamou o Henfil e ele ficou na primeira fila, quando acabou ele falou que aquele seria o hino da liberdade, do fim da ditadura, como foi mesmo. Tivemos uma aula sobre essa música na faculdade, com uma historiadora que fez mestrado e doutorado sobre música.

Eu sei que Elis e Henfil tiveram um atrito antes (1973, eu acho), porque Elis foi "convidada" a cantar o Hino Nacional nas Olimpíadas do Exército, pra se retratar de ter dito que o Brasil era governado por gorilas. O Henfil ficou puto e a enterrou no "Cemitério dos Mortos Vivos", na revista O Pasquim

Em 1979, nos meus 16 anos, assisti ELIS ao vivo no Centro de Convenções de Fortaleza. Saí de lá me perguntando, como bem fez Caetano Veloso no Espetáculo Falso brilhante (4 anos antes), COMO É QUE PODE UMA PESSOA CANTAR ACIMA DOS LIMITES HUMANOS?

Rendeu sim. Aldir há mais de 10 anos tem roda do seu aniversário com milhares de pessoas tocando só Aldir por 5h. 80 a 100 músicas por aniversário. Todas as gerações do samba e do choro presentes, Camila dele... as novas gerações todas gravando ele, ele gravando com as novas gerações, quando ele tava internado lives de 7h de duração cantando só Aldir com os grandes todos participando. A família depois da morte participando das lives, participou das rodas e agradecendo justamente a felicidade dele de se festejado diariamente por geral

There was never a Militar Dictatorship in Brazil. The people "exiled" were or communist (in that time commmunism was forbidden in Brazil do illegal) or were terrorists like former Impeached president Dilma Roussef, they killed people and promote a series of violent acts that were ended when all terrorist were out of Brazil like FHC former president, Roussef, Jose Dirceu, Jose Genoino, Lamarca, Marighella,Franklin Martins among others. Clarice Herzog who is part of the lyrics "choram Marias e Clarisses" was the wife of Walter Herzog a journalist that support and hide armed terrorist in his country ranch. This is why he was captured and killed for. All these terrorists were part of a huge coup with Cuba and URSS back in 1964. The army reacted and stopped the left coup . Unfortunatelly in 1985 the state return to the people and since then the Lenin Decalogue is being applied in Brazil. So just since 2016 we are recovering the country from communist hands. Thaks God!

Oh god, i cry every time i hear this song, specially this version... so powerful to us, brazilians, full of meaning and layers. Also a very significant song in the military government period here... the lyrics references some artists that had to move to other countries during this period. So emotional, specially nowadays, when we are living a horrific time here. Very very sad, but also, in a certain way, very much hopeful to hear this again.

I came here to say the same... If you want to hear a newer and better recorded version of this, you can hear Maria Rita's version. Although it's not Elis herself, they have a very similar style and Maria is also a great artist worth checking.
