Romaria é uma das músicas ícones que são consideradas imortais. Elis Regina foi uma das melhores intérpretes. A música fala da realidade do povo brasileiro, povo sofrido que abraça a religião como uma forma de aliviar suas dores.

Caipira vem do tupi guarani, língua indígena brasileira e significa de dentro do mato. Ou seja, é a pessoa do interior, da roça, de sitio, lavrador. Acho.que para portugueses na época da colonização a palavra seria camponês. Pirapora do bom Jesus é uma cidade paulista cortada pelo rio Tietê onde se faziam e acho que ainda se faz as romarias para lá. Por isso citada na musica junto com outra cidade de romarias Aparecida do Norte também em São Paulo. Pira = peixe, pora = pulo, ou seja pulo do peixe ou lugar que o peixe pula em tupi guarani. Sim, um jogo de palavras muito inteligente em caipira pirapora nossa Senhora de Aparecida! Aí ele está dizendo que é um sujeito humilde trabalhador do campo mas que vai expressar sua fé nas ou na "Romaria" em uma dessas cidades.

"Trem" is literally "train", but in this context, "trem da minha vida" it means "my f*king life": "Please lighten up my so sad life". The song itself is a prayer from a rural person who "doesn't know" how to pray and is desperate for some kind of help, like many of us Brazilians are.

Nesse trecho eu nunca entendi "funda" como verbo, mas como adjetivo de "trilha". Ou seja, invertendo ficaria: "o trem da minha vida ilumina a trilha escura e funda". Gostei da sua interpretação, faz muito mais sentido.

The refrain is like a prayer, it plays with words " ilumina a mina escura e funda o trem da minha vida", means "light up the deep dark cave, the train of my life"...the thing is that word "train" in the state Minas Gerais means "thing". In the end he says that he goes to some " romaria" ( religious procession) that somebody told him to do...he goes there but doesn't how to pray...

Giselle, o trem não tem nada a ver com o "trem" dos mineiros. "Fundar", no sentido de inaugurar, criar; então é uma figura poética que significa " Ilumina a escuridão onde estou e me dê novo rumo para seguir a minha vida". Trem no caso significa um trajeto a ser seguido.

Eu interpreto dessa forma e nao vejo absolutamente possibilidade alguma de interpretar a palavra "funda" como um verbo (fundar o trem da vida, como achar que ele esta pedindo pra Nossa Senhora fundar o trem da vida, pois se ele esta exatamente descrevendo uma vida ja vivida e suas experiencias? Acho a palavra muito mais proxima da interpretcao de uma mina escura e funda onde o personagem se encontra em sua solidao e tristeza. "Ilumina a mina escura e funda, ilumina o trem da minha vida." "Trem" pode ter varios significados poeticos. De acordo com o que o personagem descreve, em sua solidao, e vindo de uma familia como ele descreve, e indo participar de uma procissao sem nem mesmo saber rezar, como uma forma de ter esperanca de mudancas, a palavra se aproxima mesmo do adjetivo "fundo". Renato Teixeira escreve de forma muito proxima ao jeito de falar do povo simples de Minas, Sao Paulo etc. A mencao a musica sou caipira pirapora nossa, Pirapora é uma cidade de Minas ou ele pode estar se referindo a Pirapora de Bom Jesus em SP pra onde romeiros se dirigem em procissao ao santuario de Bom Jesus...ou ainda outra procissao, aquela regiao ali tem varias cidades que faz parte do roteiro "caminho da fé" onde os romeiros passam em procissao rumo a Basilica de Nossa Senhora de Aparecida. Quem ja conversou com Renato Teixeira acha mesmo que ele é dessa regiao do interior de Minas ou SP, ele fala com sotaque da área. Mas como falei inicialmente, eu interpreto de uma forma e vc de outra, e é assim que deve ser. Nao creio que vc deva me corrigir nem eu a você, diferentes interpretacoes de textos como esses devem ser bem-vindos.

Good afternoon Frank, so, to explain to you about the *Caipira, pira, pora*, we have to explain each word and then show the logic of that "word game". First, the words: 1) Caipira = It's a "nickname" for the persons who came from the rural area, country, stuff like that. It's also important to mention that the traditional Folklore in Brazil is pretty strong in those "non urbane areas", wich leads us to the next word; 2) "Pira, Pora" = "Pira" Is the ending of the "caipira" word (but it can also means "flame"), wich starts the "word game" trading to "Pora". Now "Pora" is the ending of the word "Caipora". That word is a non spoken part of this "word game", let's see what's "Caipora" means; 3) Caipora = Deity of the "Tupi-Guarani" tribes (native people in America before the colonization, still living until nowadays). To them "Caipora means "Inhabitant of the jungle". In the modern Folkore Caipora is considered as the guardian of the Florest (it can be really mean to those who disrespect the Florest).

@@Mastermint You only said another possibility, it can be it...but the word in the music isn't "Pirapora"....In the song it is said "Caipira, pira, pora, nossa senhora de Aparecida". So, to me my guess is closer to the truth, and you must remember that this is a religious/spiritual song, so it makes all the sense (and I really like it if it is the way I think) that the author wanted to quote one Deity from the native american indians Tupi-Guarani.

@@Gabrielnobre ok, but "Pira" means "fish" in tupi in case you want to stick to indigenous meaning of the words. Also, there's no language as tupi-guarani. It's tupi or guarani, the same way that it's italian or portuguese, and not italian-portuguese, spanish-portuguese, english-german, etc... I think that the music writer just find that it sounds good... people tend to think everything has to have a meaning in a song. Everything must have meaning in a song, but not that kind of meaning that you can/must express in significant words. Some word games are just word games, and don't need to have a "logic of the word game". It's a game, and if it sounds good, it's a very pleasant one. Let's see some possible ethimologies of the term that you can find in wikipedia: "Existem várias explicações etimológicas para a origem do termo "caipira", sempre a partir da língua tupi: ka'apir ou kaa - pira, que significa "cortador de mato"; ka'a pora, "habitante do mato", a partir da junção de caa (mato) e pora (gente); kai'pira; kopira, que significa "roçado" ou "roçador"."

Frank a música tem várias referencias, inclusive no arranjo, a simplicidade do homem do campo. Alguns dos barulhos que você observou no começo são apitos que são comuns aqui no Brasil que imitam sons de passarinhos.... no refrão se você reparar tem um acendo na cúpula do prato que faz referencia aos sinos da igreja... eles tocam na parte fraca do tempo do tempo do compasso. Como a colega falou no comentário abaixo, tem a referencia a peregrinação... o autor da música, Renato Teixeira já deu diversas entrevistas falando que a música é uma espécie de retrato das lembranças dele dos peregrinos (romeiros) que vão todos os anos a Basílica de Nossa Senhora Aparecida. Inclusive existem palavras na música que ele coloca na música da forma como o caipira costuma dizer, com alguns erros de pronuncia.

All I'm going to write here is my interpretation, but, being a Brazilian, I hope I can help you understand more about this song that seems to touch a mysterious part of the hearts of all who were born in this land. "Romaria", the name of the song, are small, very fervent religious processions that take place in the country. Something like this can be seen in the movie "Central do Brasil", which nominated Fernanda Montenegro for the Oscar for best actress. The first verses refer to life in the interior of the country, very simple in rural areas, where there is a lot of poverty, but also a lot of faith and hope. "It's about dream and dust, the fate of just one, like me lost in thoughts riding my horse. It's a noose and a knot, a jiló (a bitter fruit) of this life fulfilled in the sun", a hard life under the sun. "Caipira" would be something like "hillbilly" in a somewhat sloppy translation. "Pirapora" is a Brazilian indigenous word that gives its name to some cities in the interior, but it's more like a very beautiful wordplay with "caipira". "Nossa Senhora Aparecida", or "Our Lady, The Appeared" is the patron saint of Brazil, with a history surrounded by mystery, as her image appeared in the waters and brought abundance (search through history). The chorus then is an appeal by the simple person from the rural interior to the patron saint, who asks: "illuminate the dark mine and found the train of my life". Here I interpret another play on words. "Train of my life" compares life to a train, which travels on the rails, towards somewhere. I see "funda" being used as "deep", or "illuminate the dark deep mine", but that it attaches to another sentence with another meaning of the word: "foundation", or "found the train of my life". The second verse talks about the difficult life in which the announcer's father worked in the fields all his life and his mother lived alone, and the brothers lost themselves at the expense of adventures (addictions, gambling, perhaps), and who invested and gave up, and if there's luck, you've never seen it. In the last verse he says that he went to the "romaria", to the pilgrimage, to ask for peace in the troubles, but that as he did not know how to pray (showing the simplicity of the rural people in the face of a supposed greatness of the God who awaits their prayer) he came only to show his gaze, the look of someone suffering, who does not lose hope in the Mother of God and her mercy. I want to end by saying that no matter what state in Brazil, what social class or whatever, this song seems to awaken a mark that we have, of living a painful life, but full of hope.

Elis Regina was, in true, a great regina, a eternal queen of brazilian music. No one sings like or better she did.

Romaria (name of the music) is a kind of pilgrimage or a long procession, people from the small locations in countryside do. It usually happens in fields with a lot of nature. It is why there are bird sounds. The priest sway bells and people hold candles. The people who attend these processions are humble from countryside (called caipiras in Brazil). The guy in the song is also a cawboy wandering on his horse, thinking about his family, his unlucky life and praying for our Lady, as he was in the procession. Somebody told him to pray asking for peace and lucky. But he doesn’t know how to pray. So he just want to show his gaze.

This jump was called pirapora by the natives. Pirapora is also the name of a city in the state of Minas Gerais. Hello Frank! If you ha've never listened to "Aquarela do Brasil", don't longe more to do it. There is so many versions of song, that should be the Brazilian National anthem. My favorite version is that one sung by João Gilberto, Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil. Tom Jobim did a very nice as well.

La musica, la chitarra contadina, gli uccelli, la Romaria, il pilgrimage alla madonna di Aparecida, patrona del Brasile, che era centrale nella loro vita. Nella vita dei lavoratori delle mineraria di oro, dello stato di Minas Gerais. “Signora illumina la mina scura e fonda. Elis é minha cantora brasileira favorita. Isso porque ela não cantava só com a voz, mas com o coração, com os olhos, com a alma! Igual a ela não existe, mesmo 40 anos após sua morte. Sinto uma saudade esmagadora de uma mulher da qual não fui contemporânea. Isso mostra como a música, ainda mais as feitas com emoção profunda, transcendem tempo e espaço.
