Elian Gonzalez Press Conference with Marisleysis

Фильм және анимация

On Easter Sunday, April 23, 2000, the Gonzalez family gave an emotional press conference on C-SPAN to discuss the seizure of young Elian Gonzalez by federal agents from their home the day before. Leading the speakers is Marisleysis Gonzalez, Elian’s 21-year-old cousin, who issues a heartfelt plea for justice and demands that Pres. Bill Clinton and Attorney General Janet Reno stand before her and explain and “not to stand in front of other people and try to eat their brains with lies.” Just before she stops after 12 minutes, she demands of the assembled reporters, “Don’t get tired of listening to what I have to say.” (She had been speaking for about five minutes before I started recording.) We then hear from Donato Dalrymple, the fisherman who rescued Elian from the seas, and then from another cousin, Georgia Sid, who’s considerably briefer than Marisleysis. I stopped recording just after the lawyer, Roger Bernstein, began to speak. Marisleysis’ harangue is quite an astounding document of someone speaking entirely from the id--raw, unfiltered, and unedited. And heartbreaking.

You want an answer, lady? Try looking in the mirror! You and your family refused all peaceful options. You left them no choice! More so, Elian was not your child and he was not an orphan! It's YOUR FAULT this happened!

He hung out with Fidel on an almost regular basis. That's fucked up. His dying mom did not want that. She definitely died in vain. We said, fuck you dying lady, you're welcome, America.

His mother (r.i.p.) is not here to confirm that. For all we know that boyfriend of hers may have forced her to get on that boat. Also, Elian missed his dad and wanted to be with him. Even if his family had remained in America I'm sure he wouldn't have cared, as long as he was with his dad

Marisleysis admitted years later it was a mistake keeping Elian away from his father. Today she has no interest in seeing Elian even though he wants to come to America and visit his relatives.

These relatives were just doing this for worldwide attention. Elian is not only their child, he's not an orphan either. And these people rejected Janet Reno's offers for a peaceful resolution. They left her no choice.

The federal courts decided that he should be with his father, therefore she should have taken him to his father. In that picture, the INS agent's finger was not on the trigger and the gun was pointed away from Elian and Donato, yet Donato tried to say that the gun was pointed at his head. He was going to milk the publicity as long as he could. Look at those crocodile tears.

Inform yourself prior to opining. The Gonzalez family was summoned by government officials to pick up the child who had been found alone in a raft in the ocean by an American fisherman.

Putting the politics on the side, when mom is missing the custody goes to the father a world law. All this is because Ellian's father like any other father wanted his son and Castro as always took advantage of it.

i have always felt that it was morally reprehensible for the right-wing leaders of the Cuban exile community to use the plight of the then-five/six year-old lad as a means to rekindle their longstanding political feud with Fidel Castro.

Apparently Juan Miguel Gonzalez was offered a Green Card with a pathway to U.S. citizenship, but he turned it down to live a privileged (By Cuban standards) honorary Cuban citizen life in Castro’s Cuba🇨🇺.

@@emmanuelespataro3139 With all due respect, i strongly disagree. The plight of then-six year-old Elián ought never to have been made into a political football to be willfully exploited by the right-wing Cuban exile community as a means to rekindle their longstanding feud with Fidel Castro. That said, i simply could never endorse the Cuban government's systematic stifling of political dissent.

The late Elisabeth Brotons ought to have consulted with her ex-husband as to the whereabouts of their son when she accompanied her boyfriend named Lázaro Munero on the extremely perilous journey through the Florida Straits. indeed, Brotons went to extraordinarily great lengths to humiliate her ex-husband Juan Miguel González through underhanded means.

It's been some years since this happened. Every time I see this story it reminds me why not to vote ever again for a democrat. The community and the family was played by the Cuban government and the Clinton administration played right into it. It was a victory for the Cuban government. This was never about the little boy or his father. This was about a political victory for the Cuban government over both the US government and the Cuban exile community. Sad story but the best thing to have done would have been to call the dad and tell him we've taken good care of him, call off the Castro dogs and come and get him, sit down with us and meet with us in our home over a loving family dinner. But we all know the Cuban government would never have allowed that. The risk of defecting was too high if the dad, his new wife and new child had all been allowed to actually visit the family in their Miami home. They were never even allowed even off the plane, the kid was delivered to the plane and the plane took off shortly thereafter. He was delivered like a Pizza to the communist regime. The family and the community were played.
