Elf DLG Review | HobbyView

Is that an Elf in your pocket or are you just happy to see me?
Watch as I take another shot at DLG flying after my first one met an unfortunate end.

I like a man that is honest about his mistakes :) Great review, thanks for sharing, you've convinced me to have a try the ELF.

I'm a relatively experienced DLG pilot. I must have hundreds of flights on my Elf by now, maybe more. I can't really disagree with the review, as it flies very well for its size. However, I have a few comments.: -After a while, if you're not really careful, the back edge of the nose cone and the forward edge of the fuselage can get a bit bent where they meet, which is annoying. -IMHO, the model is too light. However, that's easy to fix if you can find the space for a little lead. Recommend you get the smallest receiver you can find. Also, a single lipo around 150 mAh will probably let you fly for an hour or so. Anything larger and you may need tail weight! -If you use D-47's, you'll need to restrict the elevator throw if you don't want it to be super sensitive. (I may have the c.g. a bit further back from the reviewer, though.) When you restrict the travel, any errors in the servo's position have an increased effect on the stab's angle. With a smaller servo, maybe you could use a servo arm hole that was closer to the center, and get less throw mechanically, though I'm not sure which really small servos are accurate. I've been thinking about making a taller stab mount to make room for a longer "horn", giving less throw. -My Elf has a bunch of separate guides for the pushrods. I suspect these are quite draggy and they are definitely easy to knock off. Recommend using thin walled, bondable teflon tubing instead, if you can find some. -Recommend using epoxy to glue in the pegs. Both of mine have come loose. The best epoxy will be a kind that's meant as glue rather than for laying up composites, and will set slowly. It might be a good idea to put the rudder control horn in with epoxy as well, and maybe a few other things. -The model is small enough that it's easy to put in the care in one piece. However, don't put the model where you'll elbow the tail when you turn around while backing up. My Elf is currently out of service until I do the repairs. I've made a small case from foam board to protect it, but on that occasion I was too lazy to use it. I wouldn't be making all these comments if I hadn't flown the Elf a lot, which means I really enjoy it.

Had mine about 5 years? Very high quality and we'll worth the money over cheaper makes. Bit of a struggle to fit all the electronics because of so little room. I have many models, but I get so much more enjoyment out of this because skill and thought are needed for a decently long flight. It's very strong, once because of receiver failure and once because of the elevator linkage slipping, it ploughed into admiringly soft grass about half inch in depth with no damage! Really wished they would make one with a slightly longer wingspan, so you could have a larger choice of servos ,receiver and battery, also, you could fit alierons, if the same company would make this larger model, I would buy it yesterday!

  • @HobbyView

I used a Hitec Rx and single 3.7v Lithium battery. The Hitecs have no problem running on 1s LiPos. The Spektrum specs say their receivers will also run on 3.7 volts. But I've never tested it.

Hydrogen may be much lighter than helium, but both are very light compared to air, so the extra buoyancy isn't that much.
