Elevons for Newbies!
Elevons for Newbies!
This video will cover elevons for newbies, and discussion of what elevons are, what elevons do and how to install elevons in your RC model airplane.
Note that the demonstration RC aircraft, my origianl design of the square flyer, can be built from plans downloaded here:
drive.google.com/drive/folder...
The majority of airplanes use three different control surfaces to control flight. Elevator for pitch, rudder for yaw and ailerons for roll. In a tailless delta wing aircraft, the aileron and elevator control functions are performed by elevons (the word is a combination of elevator and aileron). Note that from a pilot viewpoint, the controls (pitch and roll) for an elevon aircraft are flown the exact same way as for a conventional aircraft.
Today's computer radios, such as the Spektrum DX6, make the use of elevons extremely easy to implement. In the video, I will demonstrate the Spektrum DX6 setup for use of elevons.

Love the square flyer. Looks like a flying old school album cover. Thanks for the info

I am a newby and found this very helpful, I'm in the process of building a pizza box flyer (plans by leadfeather on rcgroups) even tho I'm not to the servo install yet it's nice to know ahead of time, thanks for taking the time to present this

Luca: Glad things worked out! Tim
Thanks this was a great explanation. As long as I can use elevator in a turn then I have plenty of maneuverability. I can just see landings being a little bit harder without rudder for fine touch in fast fixed wings. I had an idea this was how it worked but you made it easy and I have same radio currently.

Thanks. I dont use this for rc planes but I use this in a plane building game.

HA HA, every time your Wife yells "it flies", it reminds me of Frankenstein, "IT'S ALIVE". I think she was surprised it flew.

Hi Tim, Thanks for you video, I found this very interesting as I am new the RC planes. Recently I built a similar type of plane with only the elevons and no rudder. During my test flight, every time I tried to turn left or right the plane spins. From several experiments and crashes, it seems I need to slight turn to the desired direction and also lift up the plane while doing so. However, my experience is limited and found that turning any direction is a problem and I just can't get it right? Could you share your experience or techniques for turning with just elevons? Thank you.

Hi Zosla: For normal sport flyers, no real need for rudder in flight (although rudder helps ground ops a bit 😊). Turns with elevons should work just fine. See my foam board F-22, no rudders just elevons. My guess, almost for sure, is you have way too much elevon throw which is putting you into a spiral really as opposed to a spin. Reduce control throw and I think you’ll be OK. Tim
i have a question, in conventional aircraft design the ailerons are in main wing, and elevator in rear wing, can the ailerons move in opposite direction of elevator for giving better pitch movement so plane can become super manurable or it may crash?
@TimMcKay56

Smit: Moving ailerons like that would really not work, as the main function of ailerons is for roll control. If you would like more pitch authority, either make a larger elevator or give the elevator additional throw. Tim

Hello, quick question. I fly quadcopters normally and the roll seems backwards on wings. Aka roll left, on controller and elevon left goes up on craft. That means it rolls right? This opposite to quads?

you never showed us what happens to the control surfaces when you corner the sticks!
