MORE ABOUT SCRAP MECHANIC!
Here’s the deal: you’re a robot maintenance mechanic en route to your posting on a fully-automated agriculture planet. Your job is to take care of the worker robots as they work the land, sending the food they produce to the metropolitan planets. Thing is, close to touchdown your spacecraft loses control and crashes, but since you’ve got luck on your side (erm…), you survive! You’re stranded though, and at first glance you find that not everything’s quite as it should be. The Farmbots working the fields have gone crazy, and now there’s only one way to stay alive: using your quick thinking, your creativity and your wily knack of turning your surroundings to your advantage.
Let’s pop the hood and see what’s on offer right now:
Gender!
Choose between playing as a male or female mechanic.
Parts ‘n’ Blocks!
Scrap Mechanic comes loaded with over 100 parts. Some with unique shapes and sizes, but all giving you the power to basically create anything you want.
Interactive Parts!
The interactive parts that let you put your creations in motion represent the very best and most exciting parts of Scrap Mechanic! With a wide range of parts and an array of functions from gas and electric engines to thrusters, sensors and buttons, you’ll never be bored with the tools at your disposal!
Handbook!
Your Mechanics’ Handbook is your trusty educational friend, with you from the start and dying to be read! Flip trough its pages at your leisure to learn the basics of building in a easy way.
Connect Tool!
The tool that brings everything together and makes it all happen. A must for any true mechanic!
Lift!
Lightens the load when building creations with physics in mind. Let it lift you - and your creations - higher!
Sledgehammer!
Whack loose parts and watch them fly. Smacking physics around with the hammer is great fun.

I don't fault you for getting bothered with the grind. I've been working on a truck myself, a sizeable vehicle-but still, just a relatively small construction, and the grind already feels overwhelming at times (admittedly that might also be due to being built out of metal 3). An entire base like the one you're building Now I'm perfectly honest, I kinda prefer vanilla, even if the game is overly grindy, but that's personal preference on my part. I think to be able to point at the completed base and being able to say "I built that, with unmodded gathering rates!" is a nice feeling too. (As I had with the wall I built around my tribe's village in Ark.) It might be worthwhile adding your voice to the gathering rate rebalance discussion the devs have put out and seeing what that rebalance brings. I could probably go on a rant about how the game's strength is construction and how the current grind is more of a distraction from that than something that contributes to a sense of accomplishment-or how the current scarcity of resources discourages going for aesthetics in addition to pure functionality-but like you I'd prefer not to be overly negative. That said, as I've stated in an earlier video, I would not mind seeing some more content around grinding resources and the things you run into there. It might be inspiring for many mechanics to see how you manage those more boring aspects of the game. Edit: as for the elevator's speed. Have you considered staggering the piston extension on the controller (so the first piston expands first, then the second, then the third. Rather than all at once?) - I did notice for the controller the strength seems to be tied to the speed in some of my own builds using them)

If enough people use a "reasonable" gathering mod, the developers can incorporate it into the game. Why get stuck on vanilla, if what you really want is chocolate.

@Renzo Paez Thank you for those kind words. Mike Sheahan For me, playing vanilla is part of the fun, similar to how rebalancing mods (both reasonable and unreasonable) or new parts mods might be part of a fun experience for others. You do you, your fun isn't wrong, and neither is mine. I also feel that the argument of enough people playing a mod can go both ways, where the devs can say "well, there's apparently a perfectly good mod out for that. So there's no need for us to add that feature/rebalance anymore." I've seen devs go both ways on that. That said the devs have asked for feedback on rebalancing resource collection recently. Hail Kalashnikov True that. I can even imagine some more advanced logic and sensor systems being used to make the elevator go up and down at different speeds.

@@texag1517 game tend to get wonky with over-complex builds and a lot of the builds I see are putting absurd amounts of strain on single "rod"/pivot points with no backups/redundancies. it's a fairly good physics system overall, the math on some of the functions (pivots under high-load, bearings under high-torque, suspension under any non-fixed object) just doesn't seem to cap out or reduce the calculation cycle time so it's over-calculating numbers that should be hit a cut-off/fixed maximum value (functionally, component unusable) at that point. simply put, people are applying 6-15 multiplicative/exponential calculations on objects most likely designed for 3-4 and the engine is handling it remarkably well. how many other games allow for a single hinge you can essentially pivot your entire base upon while maintaining a real time physics sim?

I am using a light gathering mod. It just gives random amounts between 1 and 3 of certain items like oil, clams, and milk. I'm also using a mod that lets you craft component kits. Might sound broken, but you still have to grind for the mats to make them, which requires circuit boards. With as rare as component kits are, the amount of them you need is way too high. The amount of materials needed to build anything in this game is excessive. The small blocks make for pretty builds, but you need thousands of them to do anything. And the game does not make resource collection easy, what with the wonky slippery tires, and goofy game breaking physics glitches that cause builds to explode whenever there is a bit of lag. If somebody makes a mod that makes pistons and bearings actually hold together and be as strong as they SHOULD be, I'm going to be all over that. I say, mod away. The game requires it until the devs fix the issues.

  • @magepunk7711
    @magepunk77114 жыл бұрын

A few things are holding the game back right now. 1. The inability to pump oil (which they are working on). 2. The sketchy physics around bearings and pistons. (And other things). 3. The insane lag (poor optimization). 4. Resources like trees and rocks don't respawn. Still a lot if work to be done on the game, so I doubt anybody will mind using mods to supplement your mats.

And 4 I love the vids, and I for one feel like you should go for quality over quantity when making your vids, take your time and do not drive yourself mad doing these things. Wanted to make a pitch for your consideration. I’m not building my base on any sort of cliff but you sparked an idea; a Ferris wheel style elevator. Having 2 cabins on opposite ends of a bearing would allow there to always be ride waiting for you at either end. They would also counter balance each other making the effort put to create rotation wouldn’t be as intense. It would also mean there aren’t 10 individual pistons creating 10 separate structures that slow the game down. Food for thought, keep up the good work.

As far as I tested controllers get stronger with their speed set higher. So what you could do is in each phase of the controller you only extend one single-piston, but then set the controller speed to max. That should solve your loss piston issue.

I've heavily increased the drop rate, stack sizes, and crafting recipe output amounts. I don't mind grind, but it feels awful to grind a whole day for barely anything. It's made exploring actually enjoyable rather than a necessity. I also want to mine and cut trees now. The base game is definitely not balanced properly

I haven't finished the video so you might have done this, but I would add a sensor-activated block on the bottom of the elevator when it's at the top to prevent sagging. Edit: Oh, you did that!

Youre completely right about the resource thing, i dont really like to use mods in these kinds of game, but SM is just too grindy, i've always liked this in games, but this game its just ridiculous. Oh, and actually, idk if it'd work, but maybe try divide the pistons, like, 5 on the top of the elevator and 5 on the bottom, maybe it'll help with the support, idk, just an idea!

Overall, I'd say do what makes you feel best. Don't get burnt out. I can see and understand both sides, but it's up to you and how you want to manage your content. You can't and won't please each and every one of us, unfortunately. I just enjoy watching your videos and taking inspiration from them. How you get the mats is of no concern to me. Cheers, and thanks, J0hn!

Kan did a Video about a binary system elevator using bearings. It’s pretty old but if you change the multiple bit part into just one bit it would fit perfectly for your needs.

The simplest way to make the elevator slower is stagger the piston firing sequence. They do have a push/pull force which when they all fire at the same time stacks up to create the anti-gravity velocity you are experiencing.

Yeah, up the gather rates by maybe 2 to 3 times I'd say is quite reasonable. And the elevator, perhaps doors that could open somehow so you don't fall out during the trip up or down, however it would work. Its good tho :)

I think you should adjust the rates. we did just the basics because even for two guys its super grindy just to make basic things. be basically did like X's 3-5 depending on what it is.

Do the same on the top, as you do on the Bottom, let the pistons pull your elevator 1 block more up, but make a solid stopper that prevents it from doing, so it should stay at the exact level you want.

Dude, you put in more work and time in this game and it pays off cause your content is a joy to watch, but seriously mod the collections! The mod on the workshop that adds some crafting lets you craft components, I understand some people might see it as OP or whatever, but come on, it's a game and should be fun. If doing that makes it fun then by all means, do it! We're here for the joy of watching you enjoy the awesome building you do and fun you have with the game. Mod it up man!

Amazing work as always John! As I'm sure you're aware, pistons IRL are used in compression, not tension, hence the sag. If you could put all of them in the base of the elevator you wouldn't have that problem. Hopefully some day they will include a cable & winch system. Keep up the great work and take care!

Make a miner with a big "fly swatter" type arm on the front to mine the rocks form the top down, even at an angle, and it will be able to get the loose ones on the ground as well. I think that would be the easiest way for mining the rocks in the game, since they are on mounds most of the time.

Probably someone else already mentioned it, but you should only need two XOR gates to make it be callable from the floor. First gate takes as input two switches and the other takes as input the first gate and another switch.
