very true.... it can be very confusing sometimes, one moment you think you understand the behaviour and then you watch it again , and pick something else up that could mean something else. Their trunks are nature's work of art. I especially am fond of the babies learning how to use them. Khanyisa and Phabeni seem to especially like spashing their trunks in the water. Also heartwarming to see when the older ellies greet and adorn the little ones with their trunks. Enjoy the series very much.

Thank you for the feedback. Yes it does seem to be that way - they also do communicate via chemical responses when they return their own trunk back to their mouth to process the information from the Jacobson organ. We will touch on that with examples in future episodes!

You are spot on! By doing this, they communicate with one another via each another's pheromones via their Jacobson organ, also known as the vomeronasal organ. It is almost like a sixth sense. I wonder how this behavior evolved. (Even the human handshake has a practical origin, in addition to the simple aim of making contact.) Is trunk-to-mouth behavior also a way for elephants to check up on each other’s health and well-being through scent? Or is any other motivation aside from touch just speculation? Thanks so much for this fascinating series! The more people understand about these magnificent animals, the more they can engage emotionally with them and feel motivated to help. Thank you! so interesting. It is now more evident, by the trunk to mouth activity how the HERD members are so close with each other and feel connected with each other. I also remember in some other videos Adine showing the mouth and touching it with her hand and how relaxed the elephant was. I suppose this maybe considerate a very intimate gesture since it involves the mouth, but they all seem to enjoy it.

Love the pace that this Tuition Session was delivered. The Watch, Replay, Explain and Watch method, helped with the dissection, digestion and processing of the material. I actually felt as though I was attending a online university course. Thank you for the excellent presentation and delivery for novices like me. I am very interested in learning more about elephant behaviours and it is a privilege to attend these masterclasses. Please could the presenter explain, in a brief written intro or in the next video, a little bit about how they became interested in these majestic mammals, what pathway of studies did you undertake, qualifications, experience and how can a person get to work with elephants and elephant rehabilitation projects? ❤🐘♥️

QUESTION: do they greet humans that way to, placing their trunk towards your mouth, or just touching you with their trunks?

They don't tend to place their trunks into our humans mouths, however they often reach out trunk forward towards a person to collect information via their keen sense of smell.
