As we continue on our journey through the 1930s and 40s, who better to begin with than Hutch, the West Indian entertainer at the piano and a perennial favourite - the epitome of sophistication. He starts us off with a charming if little known number Blossoms On Broadway, the title song from a long forgotten 1937 Hollywood musical. Much more successful, both as a stage and film musical, was Cole Porters Du Barry Was A Lady from which we have Do I Love You? Hutch is obviously enjoying himself as his humming can be detected during the solo piano passages. Kiss Me Goodnight, the apt closing number, features Hutch with orchestral accompaniment. An in-depth biography recently published (late 1999) gives a detailed and revealing account of the life and loves of this well remembered star. A fascinating read. Another who has recently been favoured with a new biography is Billy Mayerl, represented here is his recording of Song Of The Fir Tree. This unusual but captivatingly plaintive piece is based the traditional Swedish folksong Ack Värmeland, Du Sköna (as recorded by Jussi Björling and Nicolai Gedda). Recently married to theatre owner and manager Richard Aldrich at the time this recording was made, Gertrude Lawrence shines in The Saga Of Jenny from Lady In The Dark. On the shows first night, Danny Kaye had brought the house down in his rapid-fire delivery of the names of forty-nine Russian composers in thirty-nine seconds (in the song Tchaikovsky). The producers and Danny were worried that the shows star might be upstaged but their fears were groundless and Gertrude topped Danny (who was relieved to keep his role).

this Era wasn't so great. racism, sexism, homophobia, let's not forget ww2 and the cold war. this music is lovely, the fashion was lovely, but let's not romanticize a time that was a living hell for a lot of people.

Ok.Most of us know well about these issues,don't worry.The things we long for are the beautiful parts that are lost in today's world.It's impossible to not romanticize such a romantic era (yes war is also a part of romantism because of all lost ones) By the way everything you said is continuing in an evolved modernized way.Get your head out of your ass and look at middle east,Europe,USA.Different forms of crap goes on.We can say at least at those days more people used to live for greater causes,they used to live with their honors.As a leftist,most today's left (which I don't want to call left) is nothing but insincere. Manners were also better.While racism was there,at the flip side of coin people were more respectful to each other. Way is eclecticism ,we long for qualities of first half of 20. century and we are thrilled to develope new cultures,technologies and so on.

Oh yes...it would be jolly to live back then....but only with good mental and physical health, plenty of money and two friends at the most to enjoy it all completely. An elegant cruise from New York to Havana and then on to Rio de Janeiro. First class only.
