Electronic Gaming Monthly #36 - July 1992 | Live with MLiG at RetroWorld Expo 2019

Ойындар

Episode 62 - I was honored to be invited to RetroWorld Expo 2019 last month in Hartford, CT. Coury from My Life in Gaming was there as well, and as we're good friends we thought it would be cool to do a panel together. Coury came up with the idea of us doing a live version of my "Let's Read" series, so here we go!
We knew that we wanted to pick an issue of Electronic Gaming Monthly, as it's the most popular multi-platform magazine from the 90's. We went through our respective collections together and came up with this issue. 1992 was really a special time in video gaming, and this issue covers some of the heavy-hitters from that time, including Street Fighter II, Contra III: The Alien Wars, Axelay, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles IV: Turtles in Time on the Super Nintendo, as well as Street Fighter II' - Champion Edition in the arcades and the upcoming launch of the Sega CD add-on for the Genesis.
Show Notes:
- The camera stand that I normally use to record the magazine read-throughs is far too bulky and heavy to drag across the country, so I fabricated a new collapsible one out of PVC pipe. This way I could pack it in my luggage. It turned out really nicely though, so I may start using it here at home as well.
- The audio in this video was recorded straight from the mixing board of the exhibit hall's PA system. I tried my best to clean it up and get it sounding decent, but I am not at all used to using a handheld mic, so there are some bad plosives as well as times when I wasn't talking directly into the capsule.
- The "face cam" is just my GoPro. GoPro cameras are cool and everything, but they are really not meant for the kind of low-light shooting that I was doing here. That being said, it is a "set it and forget it" Show Time Rotisserie Grill kind of camera. I didn't want to be setting up a DSLR and having it decide to shut off halfway through the presentation.

Man, I miss these days so much. I’m 40 now with all these responsibilities financial and otherwise, worries, concerns, resentment, regret.....but back then in July 1992, I was just a 12 year old boy without a care in the world and just wanted to have fun and was so happy. GamePro and EGM were like my monthly bibles back then and when this edition of EGM came out I was fully immersed in the video game world. I had my Super NES for only about 6 months at that time which my mom had bought me for Xmas 1991 and I absolutely loved it. Part of me really wishes I could go back to those times 😕

I do wish videogame magazines like this were still around. It’s so much fun to thumb through the pages, read the articles and see all the print ads. Definitely a time capsule of its era that has now sadly passed.

Then my sister started messing with me, making faces or something. So I flicked her ear. She started bawling and mom put my magazine back. Now I can see what I missed thanks to my dumb little sister! Very relaxing and interesting as usual. I used to get EGM here in the UK (EGM2 also) from a newsagent/video game shop called Cannings. The import scene in the UK was good back then and this was were I got my super famicom copy of turtles 4 from. Both Japanese and US games for both Super Nintendo and mega drive were sold and available to rent from this shop. The place still exists but now is just a newsagent. Olympic Gold the UK/EU mega drive version was sponsored by Coca Cola and featured the cant beat the feeling jingle. The version I have even has a book with it all about the Olympics and coke. Strike Gunner is repetitive but I do love the music. Street fighter 2 was a pack in title in the UK for the Super Nintendo and I was lucky enough to get one as a kid.

I still have a lot of issues of Game Fan boxed up somewhere. GameFan was essentially just a way to advertise Dave Halverson's Die Hard Gamers Club store front. The store specialized in Japanese imports, anime, and other things, so Die Hard Game fan magazine would cover this stuff heavily, while still covering the US/NA market as well. They had a rivalry with EGM. They would mock f Sushi-X and such. But I like both EGM and GameFan for different reasons.
