Electro Swing Dance Tutorial - 1) V-Step

Ойын-сауық

Heya guys. I kept meaning to start these tutorials ages ago. In fact recorded this footage 2 months ago and only got round to editing it now. I'm going to put up tutorials on electro swing dance moves from time to time. Enjoy!
Music in the video is by Darren Curtis.

    @@rewrose2838 I'd say it depends on how often you practice it. In a couple of days you should be able to get hold of the basics, but it could take maybe a week or two to feel properly comfortable doing it. And then over the course of months, it becomes more and more natural.

    Yeah it is tricky, because your feet want to turn the same way in unison. So you have to practice this a lot, doing it slowly at first with a lot of conscious effort, and then gradually over time, it will become more and more natural and you'd do it without thinking.

Not a very hard move but one that we are not used to. It might help alternate muscles or ways to bend a wee bit so I can rely less on my cane and get more strenght.

You are a natural teacher. I love your foot shots and describing how to anchor your weight an direction of the legs clearly showing them. Thank you so much. I have been trying to get the running man since the 80's ..for the first time I feel like I will be able to actually learn it hahahah. Seriously, you have a gift. I have to commend Matt on this tutorial. V step is a great movement to start with if you're a new dancer, and I personally have never seen a POV teaching video, and its clearly the ideal angle for learning. It may be tough to get a good shot with some moves, but perhaps a second camera so you can get the rear shots on split screen, or even a crane shot would be superior than the usual second person perspective wide shots. Im subscribing now, so keep up the good work Mr. Ashworth!

    Thank you very much. I am pleased you like the tutorial. Yeah, with angles it can be a bit tricky, and I think showing more than one angle can help people to better see the move. Sometimes what we see doesn't click with us until we see it from a certain angle.

    Hey Matthew. Thanks for your easy-to-follow tutorial. Just one question - what footwear (if any) do you recommend one should wear while trying to learn electro-swing? I tried doing the v-step with naked feet for 15 minutes and I think I have the movement down somewhat but my soles are already hurting. I fear if i continue with naked feet, I will soon develop blisters.

  • @MatthewAshworth

    I'd say this would depend more on personal style. Doing just one move over and over can get tedious, so you could swap practising between maybe 3-4 different moves and try to get comfortable with them before adding more to your arsenal. That's what I've been doing in my first months. :)

    Helli, I never danced in my life but this seemed fun so I decided to use some quarantine time to learn. Your vudeos are very helpful, but I have a question for you/anyone who can answer: what kind of surface is the best? Is it better to be able to "slide" or maintain bakance and firmness? Ty

  • @MatthewAshworth

    @MatthewAshworth

    3 жыл бұрын

    Thank you. Glad to hear the tutorials have been helping you. I'd say it's better to start with smoother surfaces where you can slide easily. Not too slippery of course. But things like tiles are pretty nice.

  • @MatthewAshworth

    @MatthewAshworth

    3 жыл бұрын

    Thank you and sorry for a late reply. I sometimes fall behind on my replies here. Regarding getting faster, I think it comes with practice and also generally conditioning your leg muscles to be more comfortable with the move. Do you find that you do the moves instinctively or do you have to think about how to put the feet? And regarding the song, here's the download link (it was custom-made for these tutorials): drive.google.com/file/d/1Lko19WJUy28FnTgivZ_dg5V3PIxSJx47/view?usp=sharing

    @@MatthewAshworth Thanks for your reply and the song link (I even meanwhile found it after digging through lots of comments below your vids). As of now I fortunately mostly have not to think about how to put my feet but I am not at being always moving instinctively. Sometimes I have that really smooth feeling that feels like everything flows by itself - but sometimes (this is now increasing) I don't have that feeling, even though I do not need to think about how to move feet. For me it also feels as if the moves would be "unclean" - but I do not know whether this is just a feeling or not ...

  • @MatthewAshworth

    @MatthewAshworth

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@leerleer5887 I see. The smoothness and cleanliness of the moves mostly comes with practice and repetition. The more we do it, the more our muscles get used to it, so they do it with more ease. When you have a nice streak, do you find yourself speeding up perhaps? It can happen at times that when we get into the zone, we speed up, but then our body suddenly is unable to keep up with it.
