Electrifying Texas: A Week of Meetings, Innovations, and Adventures with Edison Motors

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Join us on an exhilarating journey through Texas with Edison Motors!
🚗⚡ This week, we dive deep into the heart of the Lone Star State, exploring everything from local installer shops to cutting-edge electric vehicle technology.
🔧 Our first stop? Meeting with talented installers across Texas, touring their workshops, and discussing future collaborations. It's all about connecting, learning, and strengthening our community.
🚚 Then, we're off to visit Hyliion's warehouse for an intriguing opportunity. They've exited the electric truck market, leaving a treasure trove of parts up for grabs. Can we snag some valuable deals?
🛠️ A potential meet-up with Lewis Rossmann is on the cards too, delving into the crucial topics of right to repair and sharing valuable insights.
🏭 The Tesla Gigafactory is another highlight. We're checking out this monumental site and meeting with potential investors - some of whom have been with us since the beginning.
🌆 Our nights are just as busy with a lively outing in San Antonio, mingling with fans and investors alike, and soaking in the vibrant Texan culture.
🏙️ Next, we head to Dallas, but not before sharing our experiences in local shops and discussing the importance of electric vehicle safety and training.
📈 We also face challenges, like a disappointing investor meeting that doesn't align with our vision. But these setbacks only strengthen our resolve to stay true to our mission.
☕ Don't miss our candid moments too - from tasting Texas's unique cold tea to driving under historic bridges and admiring the organized chaos of local mechanic shops.
💡 Our trip is filled with learning, from the history of electric propulsion in trains to the future of electric trucks and the business ethics that drive our decisions.
🇺🇸 As we wrap up our Texas tour, we reflect on the incredible connections made, the lessons learned, and the journey ahead for Edison Motors.
Stay tuned for our next adventure, and don't forget to check out our merchandise on the website! Thank you for being a part of our journey.

🔧 Built by Truckers, for Truckers 🔧
Founded by Chace Barber and Eric Little in 2016, Edison Motors is a testament to the trucking spirit. Beginning with a 1969 Kenworth Logging Truck named "Old Blue," they journeyed from Merritt, BC, hauling logs to the Yukon and drilling rigs in Alberta. Frustrated with newer trucks, they rebuilt classics from the frame up, expanding into power generation and off-grid solar systems in 2019. Their journey led to the creation of the Edison Truck, a robust electric truck tailored to logging and heavy vocational industries.
🔩 Upgrade Without Replacing: Edison Electrification Kit 🔩
Keep trucks on the road longer with the Edison Electrification kit. Upgrade your driveline to electric without replacing the entire truck. Ideal for vocational applications, this kit is a cost-effective solution. Unlike other electric trucks, Edison Motors offers customer choice. Choose between Rebuilding (utilizing existing cab and frame rails) or Remanufacturing (brand new frame and chassis).
🚚 Payload Efficiency: The Weight Balance 🚚
Edison Trucks match the weight of a normal diesel truck. With reduced motor weight and additional fuel balancing out battery weight, experience efficiency and increased payload capacity. The L series, though slightly heavier, remains comparable to a normal diesel truck.
🛠️ Keep Your Equipment with Rebuilt Trucks 🛠️
For vocational trucks, keep your equipment with a rebuilt truck. Edison's e-pto and control system integrate seamlessly. No need to replace your entire body when upgrading to an electric truck.
🔧 Bespoke Manufacturing: Handcrafted to Your Needs 🔧
The manufacturing process at Edison Motors is a testament to their commitment to customer satisfaction. Each Edison Truck undergoes a meticulous five-step process, from frame and rolling chassis preparation to final touches and rigorous testing. The focus is on building a truck that reflects the customer's requirements, embracing the philosophy of "Building The Truck Of The Future With The Quality Of The Past."
🔌 Electric or Diesel-Electric: Your Power, Your Choice 🔌
Edison Motors offers both fully electric and diesel-electric vocational trucks based on customer demands. The onboard generator ensures continuous operation in areas lacking charging infrastructure.

Totally agree with keeping this private as much as possible to maintain self control. Start small, build the company slowly, reinvest profit back into more materials and design. Repeat. It's not a fast process, but avoids the boom / bust that happens with so many startups due to investor control.

Investors lack the one essential thing Edison Motors has, a passion about what they are building. Investors have an interest in money, sometimes a desire or lust for it but never a passion to build. Without the passion compromises are made for the bottom line instead of for the vision of the brand and product.

Ice tea is not traditionally drank in cold weather or during the winter months here in the states. Its a summer drink to help cool off during the 100f+ days we get during the summer. Usually iced tea is sweetened but i guess some people prefer it unsweetened and it is alot easier to add sugar to tea after its served than to remove it lol.

Sweet tea is just to cover up bad water and yucky tea. Good ol' unsweetened iced tea made right is where it's at. 😉 But for real, there's an art to good unsweetened tea. Lots of it depends upon the quality of the tea and how it's brewed. Unfortunately many restaurants use cheap bulk insta tea and don't brew it proper either. Need to find someone that makes a good home brew and that's where you're likely to find the good stuff.

Iced Tea is how you keep from melting in summer 9 months out of the year. Sweet Tea is how you know you're in the South. So say the scumbags that raise the price of Insulin without limits because they know they have captive customers that want to live. I know you have a couple of YT channels like Deboss Garage doing a retrofit build. I hope they all do something a little different. I think you briefly mentioned in a previous video that Deboss is doing an OBS Chevy. Maybe someone does an old Autocar, or a 4x4 rock crawler, or a tow/service/welding work truck? It's always interesting to see how different segments of the market value different things about the same product. Edison's viewpoint has pretty much been from logging trucks, but it'd be interesting to see how a tow truck or welding truck values the kit instead.

You need to schedule an appointment for a tour at the Gigafactory. If you just drive up in a regular vehicle and tell security "We're Edison Motors, can we come in?" Not gonna happen. Security has to put up with enough people try to sneak in to meet Elon. Although, you probably should establish a relationship with Tesla to get some Edison's on their yard. You saw how many trucks they got out there. I doubt they're planning to replace them all with Tesla trucks.

You will have to be very careful with patents and all the legal stuff. because I’d be worried that once some of these external installers get good at it and get familiar with the parts, they could source the parts themselves and cut Edison out of the equation altogether. I really do believe in right to repair is awesome but using readily available parts and having the software open for modification might make you vulnerable to knock offs. Your company is great and deserves the reward for all your work and research. You’ll need a good legal department to make sure people are allowed to repair but not copy your designs totally

And we all want to see that Edison motors maintains the best possible reputation. Tesla was pretty innovative, but the only thing that resolves their Full Self Driving liability is the company's enormous valuation. I'd prefer to see EM grow slowly and prove the product rather than grow fast, have some major failure and then people are turned off from the idea.

Right now we are working on a potential series A round. Unfortunately we are limited to only Reg D accredited investors. We are going to try to have a broader more crowdfunding type vehicle to make sure our early supporters can invest if they would like. We hope for this to happen within the next few months. We will announce it first to our KZread “Decision Maker” members -Theron

I'd like to know more about what Hyliion said. They didn't agree to filming or interview, but they must have lent some keen insight into Class-8 trucking's unique challenges and why no company has come out with a viable product yet. Not just them, but Workhorse, Lordstown, Hyzon, Nikola, and Tesla all have proof of concepts but they're running into issues with weight, charge, range anxiety, culture, cost, etc... that just can't beat diesel. In a way Hyliion was in the same boat you were. Their idea was an electric truck but with an onboard generator that charges batteries with natural gas, but they went the SPAC route and had $600 million to play with. They succeeded with their truck but couldn't find a market for it. Are you worried about repeating the same mistakes?

Keep your Business ORGANIC. As you are. Let it grow where your customers take you. Remember that you were once THAT CUSTOMER. If you take your customers, (installers, as well as buyers), WITH you, they will help you succeed, but when you start taking your customers for granted, like the big OEMs, they will go where they feel that they are listened to. Money lenders, of ANY size, are mainly, (and the bigger they are, ONLY), interested in the bottom line: Profit. Customers are Sheep to be Sheared, then left for another year. (Don't forget, YOU are THEIR Customer). Not enough wool this year? OK, we still get our return, just in meat, not wool. You will get thrown under a Truck at the drop of a hat. Probably your own! The way you are going about it is not orthodox, but that just means you might be starting a new trend :-).

Also, CRH builds buildings, including site work, so a potential deal to be made in building your shop.

Do be careful, there is a guy down there that looks like a plant and will scare the heck out of you. Anyway, welcome to Texas. As to right to repair, sometimes the primary company doesn't even know what is in the hardware that they are putting on. Even more so in electronics. They give a spec to an outside company. The box shall be this big, bolt on with this footprint and follow these Input / Output specs. What is in there, they don't know.

We all want electric trucks, I’m from Mexico I’d love to, sadly I don’t have the infrastructure needed to work on electric vehicles but I do have the skills needed for it, I’ve work with Rockwell/allen Bradley for industrial applications and I also have semi trucks (I’m learning the mechanics but I have my mechanic) where can I get the requirements for my shop to see if I can apply to work on these beautiful machines? (I guess at the very beginning this would be for my one fleet)
