Electrician Builds Off-Grid Van To Surf The World

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

For a dedicated surfer, few things in life are more important than chasing the perfect waves. For Johnny this meant converting a van into an amazing tiny house on wheels which allows him to live and work full time, while traveling all over New Zealand in search of the best surf spots.

When you opened your van door to that beautiful ocean view, I smiled so wide, closed my eyes, and for a moment I was there. This makes it all worth the plung. You did an awesome job on the van. Safe travels. Namaste.

$20 000.00 is easier to pay off than $100 000.00. Seriously, in Ontario a small one bedroom condo can set you back over $100 000.00. Or even more! And it WON'T drive you to the good surf spots! He has what he wants in his van, he can get to work or to the beach. He works when HE wants to work. I'm seeing very little stress here.

Good point! However, to counter, investing the 80k minimum that he saves between the 2 housing solutions (not to mention savings on living expenses) will certainly put him even farther ahead than paying into a mortgage!

There's something to be said for fulfillment: For the next 20 years he gets to surf daily and experience all of it while he's healthy and able. Having a stick-and-brick home might appreciate over time, but no one is guarenteed that time. Who's to say he'll be alive in 20 years to "capitalize" on that house investment? I've had four friends die before the age of 30-- We're not promised anything. Do what makes you the most fulfilled. (And he'll make money working now and can save it all without a mortgage or rent. Suppose mortgage is $1200- He saves that monthly for 20 years = $288,000. If invested in a Roth IRA or something, then you'd really be set for retirement).

Hi Bryce and Rasa, I loved this one although I'm not used to you showing van conversations... I've been to New Zealand in 1985. We hired a motor home and although it was expensive we spent a FANTASTIC 2 weeks exploring all the beauty that is New Zealand! Since I'm an Aussie you've put the idea in my head that maybe I could move to NZ for a while, do a van conversation like Johnny's then explore you're beautiful country in more depth! 2 weeks just isn't enough!! Johnny's van looks very functional, especially given that it's a shorter wheel base by the look of it. The perfect set up for Johnny to work and travel for surfing. I love that he's managed to fit his surfboards inside and a toilet. Thanks again for another invitational video, even if it is a year old I'm only seeing it now!!

Hi Bryce, wow ... what a find! Johnny may have started out not really knowing what to do but that young man is a craftsman now. When you showed the pic of him in the empty van with insulation along the sides .. I was thinking, That's tiny! Isn't it strange how roomy it looks with everything in there after the build? It's so open ... roomy. Many many happy years to come for Johnny. Thanks for finding and sharing ... many new ideas in my head.

The wife and I are in the process of doing research for converting a Sprinter a lot like his, and this video just reassured me of our plans. The biggest draw is the freedom to live instead of just working 9-5 to get by. Love the van, friend!

What a time we live in today, and what an amazing country NZ! Way back in 1981 two buddies and I traveled through Mexico by bus and it changed my life and we were only gone for just two weeks. Surfing is like nothing else on earth, it is a connection to the soul and that is why you see people like Johnny making his dreams come true. Like a older man once told me when I was living out of my truck traveling the USA, he said " if you wait til your older you wont be able to climb the mountains to see the views." As an artist I have never liked being tied down for to long it gets hard to find inspiration and before I get to old I may get me a bus and just take off and finish out our trip down along Mexico's Pacific coast we never made it to Escondido.

Not something I could do so I am very envious of this young mans freedom and autonomy. The van alone was a great find but to be able to have a job where you can pay for what you love to do. So amazing to see young people finding alternate lifestyles that don’t involve huge amounts of debt. Well done.

I like how he uses the private camp grounds in the winter, this not only provides 240 volt power and shower and laundry facilities but helps the camp owners big time with revenues other their quite winter months. Thanks Johnny. I’m surprised how high the Ford Transit Van is. Bryce must be very close to, if not two metres tall and he stood upright inside.
