Electric window switch fix. (Audi,Seat,Skoda,VW)

I knocked this video up really quick so apologies for the poor quality.
I'm using a switch from a VW in this clip so VW,Seat,Skoda and Audi use more or less the same switches however most cars have the same concept and it's just a case of cleaning the contacts to get them working again.
The reason I made this video is because I have seen so many people buy new switches when not needed, I have repaired around 20 of these for friends but could not for the life of me find a video or tutorial on line to help others.
Really hope this saves you money guys and girls and please share and give me a thumbs up.

I'd just like to say thank you for this informative video. My 2000 reg VW Polo has had a faulty switch for over 10 years. The passenger window could not be wound down from the switch in the drivers door. Recently, the drivers window hasn't been able to be wound down. It gradually got worse over just a few months. I asked at the local garage I usually get the car serviced at and they suggested buying a new switch from ebay and trying that, but the cheapest switch I could find was £24. After doing some research I came across this video. There wasn't anyway near as much corrosion as in the video, just a very small amount on the inside of the metal circles. I cleaned them up and reinstalled them. All the windows now work perfectly!

Sam Smith I really pleased this video has helped. I'm not great with the whole production side of thing and had no idea if anyone would even watch. Thank you so much for letting me know this worked for you I really appreciate you taking the time to comment. Hopefully this video will help overs and I'm now keen to make some more.

Thanks for the help chap. Our lupo was on its second set of these extremely naff switches, and I didn't want to buy another set (Now we know where all the Lucas british motorbike switchgear designers went to in the seventies.. VW!) I had to scrape the little silver pads in side the switch as they had oxidised to a dull grey with black spot in the middle. Use a clean small flat screwdriver and be very gentle..

I thoroughly recommend you consider owning a 1990's XJ40 Jaguar Sovereign or Daimler! Never had one fail to get me to my destination, but there's ALWAYS one (or more) little jobs to do on them... And yeah, I remember having trouble with the window switches on one of mine..

Good video, took mine apart and cleaned them up but still have an intermittent fault on the windows from the drivers control. Not sure what to try next...

when you say you have an intermittent fault, what is it actually doing? is it the drivers door switch? If it is the drivers door switch are you only having problems with the drivers window or is this happening to the passengers as well?

Just on the drivers side, it the issue comes and goes. I swapped the switches round, same result and the central locking and mirror joystick both work. Perhaps its the wiring loom between the door and the car.

Dutch Trucker may I ask, was the switch clean when you opened it? If the switch was clean i would next put my attention on having a look at the window regulator its self, they have a habit of coming off the runners or twisting/kinking the cables that pull the window up and down smoothly. If the window glass has twisted due to one of these it obviously won't move, but playing with the switch could be knocking it back in position and alowing it to slide, and giving you the intermittent issue. I'm unsure of your electrical knowledge so it's far easier for you to look at physical mechanical possibility rather than messing about with the wiring.

Great video. I tried cleaning it today like the video but only started working for around 5min then it stoped again and then it starts working again then stops again. I have a Volkswagen Polo 2001 and my driver side switch is not working properly. When i press the button down to open the window it won't go down it only works if i really put force into it but when i press it up it comes up fine without any hesitation. Next to it i have my passenger side switch and that switch works fine. But when i remove the switch and swap the cables around and try it like that it works both ways but then sometimes when i put the driver side cable into the passenger side switch it stops working again and starts working again Do you think its the switches thats the problem? Do you think new switches will work? Thanks in advance.

E J I am always worried about diagnosis without seeing the car my self but it does sound like a new switch is required. One thing I would check is that the silver buttons on the PCB are fitted correctly as this could cause the switch to stop working.

Paul Elliott thanx fr replying il make sure the silver buttons are not popd out of the pcb if they are il pop it back in and see what happends. Are they usually loose like that it just comes out or are they suppose to be stuck on?

They are not stuck but they do have locating pins to prevent them from moving around the board. I have my fingers crossed for you

Paul Elliott thanx alot for all your help i tried cleaning it again and same thing is happening. I just ordered new switches from online hopefully they solve the problem. I dont think its the motor or the regulator because the window does go up and down fine. Its just when i push down on the switch really hard it starts to open then gets stuck then gota push hard on the switch again to open it fully but pulling the switch up to close the window closes it just fine hopefully its just the switch.

The silver pads oxidise and may need some careful and gentle scraping. P*** Poor design for such an expensive component if you ask me..

My alhambra locks and unlocks automatically and the windows don't work anymore, when I press the de-mist button for the rear screen the hazards come on!! Will replacing this switch fix it??

  • @MrHammond85

Probably not. That sound like you have a wiring issue. Have a look in the rubber boot by the door hinge as the wire are commonly found broken in there. Sometimes holding the window switch and then slowly moving the door will activate the windows ect.

Again the same issue, this time it will be the rubber boot housing the wires in the tailgate.
