My Makita DUR181RM also just packed in with a strong electric smell, used it ca 1.5years, in fairness these ones are for small areas and i was pumping ca 2-3x 5.0 batteries thru them each use. I ordered replacement motor for it and also ordered the bigger brother dual battery Makita DUR368AZ for my heavy duty jobs. Thanks for showing how to replace so i can use this smaller trimmer in future for some light jobs.

Hi! I just got a problem with my makhita 181. The motor does seem to work a "littlebit" i tried to take it apart to clean it a bit. So heres my problem. The motor works as long as i help it with my hand to give the rotor a spin "mechanically". Then push the powerbutton and it spins around. If i then let it come to a complete stop, the button does not manage to start it, i then have to push the rotor a couple of spins to get it going. Hope you understand half of what i just wrote.. 😅 do you think this could be a motor issue? Even if it kinda works with a little help?

Yes, I would expect the motor to be the problem.
Is it possible to remove the hole trimmer head, without disassemble the motor etc. ?
