Electric rally car at the Ceredigion Rally 2022

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

We check out the Rali Bae Ceredigion and take a close look at the first electric rally car in the UK, an Opel Corsa E straight out of a championship they run in Germany. Commonly known as the Vauxhall Corsa E in the UK. We also take a look at some of the other cars that catch our eye, like a 'made in Wales' Darrian and a beautifully prepared Ford Escort Mk2 driven by the lightening quick Gwyndaf Evans.
This rally is the first to achieve the FIA Environmental Accreditation following the organisers commitment to sustainability and environmental management.
We were also allowed to by the course car, entertaining the crowd and opening the first stage of the rally in the Tesla powered Beetle.
Please forgive the rampant reminiscing as Tim and I remember our rallying days fondly and contemplate an 'electric' return.

Absulutly great that they are coming. You could build a motocross course inside a housing estate, or better still in the grounds of a hospital! well if I was riding anyway lol. Electric go carts and street rally stages can be run anywhere, bringing a real sport to the masses.

Rallying is a bit unique in that there isn't a need for more power from electric motors or conversions. We all remember the Group B cars that were outlawed for their insane power, and classes today can exceed the limits very easily so must be restricted. A separate class for electric would be really good to see. As you eluded to in the video, various forms of racing create new technology that filters down to us mere mortals in road cars, so getting EVs into all forms of racing can only be a good thing for all.

My thoughts are once you get passed the noise = power thing, you are totally blown away with the quick speed take off and take over options you have in Formula-E. I have been following Extreme-E and Formula-E since it’s conception and watched the evolution from swapping cars mid race to completing a full race on one battery. The tech has come a long way and there’s nothing that sounds like a dentist’s drill going around a track. The race becomes more technical and when you have things like Fan-Boost for drivers from your phone, Attack mode where drivers go over which increases power. It’s way better than going around in circles and hope someone crashes so you can take the lead. (Yes more technical than that) But you get the point. Enjoy your shows very much Richard, awesome.

The rules have changed over the decades in F1, which saw tech accelerate (pardon the pun...) ,so maybe a new rule to allow full electric to compete head to head over the 190mile race distance? They used to have rules 750cc forced inducted / 2500 NA ,1500cc force inducted / 3000 NA etc ,which brought in, the Turbo era, and quickly advancing turbo tech.

Most of our attention is taken up by the visuals - l've heard it's about 60%. Hearing takes differing percentages, depending if we're listening to classical music at home, or for animal sounds in the great outdoors. With man-made noises we can cross from the threshhold of hearing to that of feeling. Driving a loud motor sounds and feels great, as we all know, but the feedback through the auditory and touch senses can distract us from seeing as clearly for short periods, just long enough to find immoveable objects, unintentionally of course! There are a lot of vibrations feeding back as we floor it - the fewer the better as far as our concentration is concerned. A drop in a motor's volume can, and does, result in a change in visceral and visual awareness for example. Electric motors help us focus more on what's important, race winning and car (or life) saving: there are less distractions plus much better reliability. Most people want and need their pride and joy to be noticed and we purr over compliments, but electric motors separate the big'uns from the the little'uns. Good job guys!

I have to say I am a great lover of the noise and pops and bangs generated by almost any kind of race car to date, it really adds to the atmosphere. However, at the end of the day it's all about racing, showing off the skills of the driver and the handling of the car. That hasn't changed with the advent of electric cars, so does it really matter if they are quiet? I don't think so, given time I think people will realise the game is the same, you can just hear yourself think while you appreciate the skills in front of you. Great video as always, thanks guys.

There were people complaining that it was ruining their sport, as they wanted to watch mk2 Escorts drifting around the bends and four wheel drive cars are boring to watch… So here we are over 40 years later and are ‘enthusiasts’ still saying the same thing? No, they’ve moved on. Yes, the spectacle has changed but the thrill of watching skilled drivers racing over rough ground at fantastic speeds hasn’t 🙂

When you're main love is Drag Racing, it's hard to get past the 'noise thing' ,listening to an engine with a lumpy tick over, wondering cam duration etc, and even just looking under a bonnet, at the header sizing, carb / injector sizes and the craftsmanship (not saying yours aren't but....) Listening to 12,000hp of Nitro burning cackle, and performance figures of 0-300mph in 3 seconds is something I think electric is along way off tbh. With being involved in RC racing, for the last 40yrs (😳), the battle between IC and electric, has been going on for longer than I've been involved. Back then, brushed motors and Nicad's just wouldn't cut the mustard against high reving IC power, but these days, with sensored brushless (and controlled motor timings) and lipo batteries ,alot of people are converting their IC to electric!! So, yes, electric does have a place, but needs to be ,organically (?) brought in imo.

I, also, love the noise...makes the hair on my arms stand on end! It's gotta be 20 years ago a kid at work got one of those ridiculously loud stereos in his little truck. I brought a special CD to work in short order. I handed it to him on our lunch break, and suggested we go out to his truck and play it. It was sounds recorded at airshows where WWII Warbirds had roosted. V-12 Merlins, Daimler-Benz 601's, and Allisons, Bristol Radials, Pratt & Whitney Radials, Wright Radials, the almighty Rolls-Royce V-12 Griffon, etc.. You get the picture, if you want noise, let there be noise. There was a period where electric model planes carried sound cards with the correct noise for the engine the full-sized plane carried. Pitch was varied with the throttle, as was the file used. They were very realistic! Why not put such a system in electric cars if you want the sounds of 'real' racing instead of those silly sirens or odd tones that we are seeing/hearing at races to keep spectators off the course.

Deeply bured within the chassis. The swappable one - lighter, air-cooled or passively cooled, easy to access to simplify swapping. Maybe allowed to discharge only to reduce thermal stress (so the fixed one will have to handle the regen power). Does it look like a way to offer easy half-swap compared to whole-battery swap?

Couldn't agree more. I really hope EV-racing will create new EV-tech, so then it will be put into regular EVs: - I expect improvements in digital torque vectoring and traction control. Remember that "tank turn" by Rivian? Unfortunately, it didn't make its way into production version. - Battery-swapping tech/equipment/standards - makes sense for racing, makes perfect sense for daily driving (allowing to keep small battery for city rides and quickly swap it during long tour). - Maybe in-wheel motors. Doesn't look technically feasible today, so maybe race-tech will bring it to fruition.

Totally agree with your comments on F1 being behind the curve. It’s easily explained by big oil sponsors as well as engine suppliers not wanting to fully commit their road car/van sales to fully electric, which is why that some will fall away and go bankrupt in this ev disruption. They try to be efficient but noise is firstly a by product of inefficiency as well as heat. They used to say F1 sold rii oh ad cars but when you now look at car sales and see that EV’s are really the only type selling and selling fast!

I think its a good thing it would be cool also to do battery swapping so when you have finished your stage they undo a few bolts it drops out and you can then fit a fully charged unit and maybe a different power output depending on the stage so I do think its the future as they will be more powerful and once they get popular then the rules will change and power outputs will be cut down like they did with the big turbos in the 80s and 90s but it is what it is so in the mean time lets enjoy the new I am a mechanic have been for 30 years a petrol head but I can also see its time for a change as engines have come as far as they are going to go and its time for a change so even I have ordered a Vauxhall mokka ultimate a year ago all be it I am still waiting for it as I know they have chip shortages and that so many people have put orders in and overwhelmed the manufactures as they underestimated the popularity of EVs way too much Stalantis cocked up big time if I had known I would have ordered another Ev like a tesla model 3 but I like the shape of the new mokka there's just two of us we only do local milage so its perfect for us and we go to the isle of wight once a year from the midlands which is well within its capabilities once I get it I still have no clue when I am getting my ev as I ordered it on October 1st 2021 so its nearly a year I am glad I never sold my ice car as I was told 6 months LOL what a joke.

I absolutely agree with your 'rant' (which it is not), I do not care about noise. The majority of the viewer cannot attend the events, due to travel and costs, so watch an appreciate it from home, i.e. TV. There noise is moot, because can easily be adjusted. And, what is 'noise' worth, if everybody *has* to ware hearing protection? I think most people want to see (close) racing, speed, overtaking, and such. A test of man/machine. I do not think, in fairness, that type of engine/motor has a major effect on this... That said, I do think electric is the future. It's still early days, things like range and weight has been improved a lot, and will be developed further. And tech like torque vectoring gets me excited. I quite enjoy racing like Formula E and Extreme E. And look at that Audi RS Q e-tron, a hybrid Dakar car, I sure there will be a lot more development there. Bring it on!

Well I love Formula E for the racing, the sound I can take or leave. Don't hate it, but with the TV turned up on race day the whine can be a bit piercing. At least we can hear the tyres scream and chirp against the tarmac! Not hearing the sonorous notes of a current WRC engine anymore would definitely be a loss, but I do appreciate how electric rallies would do less to disturb the wildlife in the area. The current WRC hybrids have had disappointing reliability, but if the manufacturers were able to roll their own electric power units I'm sure they'd get some tremendous performance out of them.

I think EV are a good option certainly for the likes of rally sprint, rally cross and other circuit racing. Also E-Bike Moto Cross for the bikes. Needs to be a little different from the E-series that is currently Formulae E. I think if the cars also put out a sound track more like a revving ICE - V8 burble then that might give it a bit of atmosphere - because the Atmosphere is the noise not just the speed and the livery of the vehicles.

I own and love a Renault Zoe; that said, I believe that EVs will kill motorsport, at least "officially". There will be more and more EV races - because companies need them as publicity and to develop new technologies - but people will gradually lose interest in them; I really don't know why: it's a feeling... During lockdowns, the public TV here re-ran some late '70s/80s F1 races and watching Gilles Villeneuve struggling to keep that Ferrari in line and *seeing* that struggle was worth all the takeovers you can see in F1 in these days. When things look and feel "too perfect" they don't rise much sentiment

I have grown up with ICE engines and so the thought of racing without the noise just takes away some of the excitement, you don't get the sensation of speed as hearing that noise, but with time it all changes and electric will continue to get better and better. As I have said in the past I feel for parts of the world we still need hybrids as places like here in Canada we don't have the best charging network outside of the big cities so you can travel, but we don't have rapid chargers to make cross country as speedy. I follow Sasha Anis from Mountain Pass Performance who has built a hybrid electric race car, and he has the electric motor inline with the piston engine and he can spin the piston engine with the electric motor and it basically sounds like it is running when it is only pumping air. Now that would be the coolest car is to have a plastic or other light weight V8 style replica engine spun by an electric motor so it sounds like a piston car, but is all electric. Keep up the good work and I love your conversions and how detailed you are with the work

I am a rally fan in Australia, I love the noise but realise it can't go on forever, we have to move on or rallying won't survive, at a rally a couple of weeks ago many of the competitors hit kangaroos, they seem to be spooked by the noise of the cars, so an electric car that is quieter should be kinder to our environment and wildlife, but getting the dinosaurs running motorsport to change will be difficult, but if they don't change and work with the environment rallying will die from lack of relevance and governments will be pressured to ban it

Thanks for the excellent video, Richard and Tim. I gave up attending motorsport events decades ago, because although I love cars and bikes, I hate the noise and stench. Formula E is great, but that artificially enhance high-pitched drivetrain racket is both totally unnecessary and damaging to the hearing. What is becoming more important is the sound of the response of spectators to the drama of the races enhanced by tyre noises and the occasional sounds of barriers and vehicles being 'customised' in excitingly unique ways'. Let's face it, there's little noise from a football match, or a wrestling match, other than the responses and enthusiasm of the crowds, so why should motorsport be any different? Let the spectators speak! The drivers thrive on the feedback. If almost all 'infernal' combustion engines were banned from most racing, except for in historic events, more people would become interested in the sports. It's also high time for the FIA to remove the unnecessary noise from Formula E cars, give them decent battery sizes and to let them race on full courses at proper racing circuits. With modern EV's, a full Formula 1 race distance is becoming feasible. Performance will continue to improve as experience is gained, just as has happened with petrol-fuelled cars and bikes over the past 125 years. I take issue with Formula 1 commentators who trumpet their sport as being the pinnacle of racing efficiency, while the cars still burn through fossil fuel at the rate of something like 4 or 5 miles per gallon. For perspective, a 50 kWh battery contains about the same available energy as 1 gallon, or ~4.5 litres, of petrol. Yet an ordinary road car can manage 30 to 60 miles (50 to 100 km) of range on that gallon, whereas an EV does between 60 and 300 miles on that 50 kWh, depending upon car size, mass and design. A formula E car has a similar battery size to that, today. So treble it and you can begin to compare performance of such a vehicle with a 'modern' hybrid F1 car. I'd say that they're almost neck and neck already.

The lack of noise thing, is indeed a problem and that is because of the way, we constructed all the culture and spectacle around the rally sport, the fact rally and F1 cars make a bunch of noise themselves, meant we decided, that was the only sound necessary to captivate people, no other type of sounds or tricks were introduced to grab the public attention, music could become a big thing in electric rally racing, perhaps race commentators, perhaps even permit electric race cars to use their own funny noises, think outside the box, is time to rethink how rally racing for electric cars is setup, perhaps trying to push electric rally cars, into the world of ICE rally cars is the wrong approach.

  • @billhill4479

My understanding is that the F1 fans want the noise. They complain every time there is a engine configuration change and the sound reduces or changes. So, I expect that F1 management is being strongly influenced by them which is fair enough. No fans, no F1. I think electric F1 is inevitable. Maybe they just need to make electric racing a bit more exciting with the addition of sound ? I believe there are car companies already copyrighting certain sounds for their brands. Imagine if an electric formula one series was allowed to create it's own sounds ? They could replicate the sounds of old, they could use Star Wars type sounds of anything they like. How cool and exciting would that be ?

Coming from the big power outputs of the turbo era of F1(which i still dont think we've reached again?) , to the music of the V12's to the outstanding sound of rpm and the V10's, it changed, we moaned, then enjoyed it....
