He was talking to a Long Distance Directory Assistance operator who had offered to put his call through for him. Unless somebody had an answering machine, fairly rare back in the day, calling somebody could ring and ring and ring if nobody picked up. The entire thing would be far more emotionally charged than kids understand today. Jim Croce's "Operator" is a similar song that is a little more explicit about what is going on.

Back when land lines were the only option as far as telephones were concerned. Very few people had answering machines, either. So, unless you happen to be around to answer, the caller would have 2 options, either hang up and try again later, or, 'hang on', the telephone in the hope that whoever they're calling hears it and answers. Missed calls weren't a thing, either. There was no indication of whether anyone rang your number, so if you missed it, you had no knowledge of the call ever taking place. The, 'twilight', he's referring to is the, 'hanging on', the line in the hope someone will answer. Back then, if you let the phone ring long enough it would hang itself up and give an, 'unobtainable', tone. The only choice then, was to hang up.

Do kids even realize how a telephone worked? No voice mail, no answering machines. If no one was home just endless ringing. Or worse, someone may have been home and just not answering. No caller ID. No information. Just questions unanswered. I wonder if the despair of this song still translates.

One of my favorite songs by them. So painful and desolate and yet it's still quite lush musically and the sound effects and everything. Somehow that reminds me of when I was very young, for a while we had to be on a party line with several other houses in our neighborhood, it's like everybody is sharing the same line even though we have different phone numbers. So if someone else is already on the phone talking and you needed to make a call, you couldn't. If you picked up you could literally hear them talking and so nosy neighbors would snoop all the time. And some people would just get on there and yak forever until somebody would have to get on there and say will you please get off so I can make an important phone call?!

You need to prepare them for the beginning though. The video of the dancer that goes with it is fantastic. The beginning was a shout out to People coming up with crazy theories about back masking.. recording voices backwards. It says "The music is reversable, but time is not. Turn back! Turn back! Turn back! TURN BACK!" Jeffs not so serious version of "I can reverse the music, but you can't get back the time you wasted dwelling on it". Genious.

In the 60’s and 70’s, the old “switchboard” days were long gone. Where you’d call the operator to connect your call (although you could if you wanted). But there was no cell phones and few (if any) answering machines. You’d make your call and if it didn’t get answered, you could let it ring all day. We also had “party lines” back then. No it wasn’t to party lol. You shared physical lines with a neighbor or two and sometimes you’d pick up the phone to make a call and your neighbor would be talking to someone already. You had to hang up and wait your turn (or eavesdrop hehe)!

Dolang dolang! Great to hear this song again! It seems many younger people don't know what it was like before mobile phones. Back when this was written most people didn't have answering machines. (They were separate machines you'd need to buy). If you called someone and they weren't near their permanently-located phone, they didn't answer. Imagine today if someone could only reach you when you are in your home? They might well need to try calling you many times before they finally reach you. When you did get home there was no 'missed call' info to tell you who called. The situation was even worse in the early days of the internet - when everyone had dial-up internet. If your brother or sister was on their MySpace page, anyone who called got a busy signal. Getting busy signals every time you tried calling someone was not unusual. Now I'm feeling OLD!

From what I can recall, you could be waiting for a few minutes while the phone rang that you called before someone would pick up. You'd have to give it a couple of minutes because most people only had one or two handsets in their house and it could take that long for them to come in out of the garden or the garage to where the phone was. So a two minute wait was just what you expected before giving up and trying again later. And then you'd have to ask for the particular person who might be out anyway.

strange to think that the only phones when this came out were land lines and none of the young that I knew wanted to be in constant contact with anybody but now you are forever in contact and telling everybody what you are doing.

As has been stated numerous times, ELO were brilliant! Another underrated song by ELO with a similar feel to this is 'Mission', a song about an alien sent to Earth to observe and report back.... here is a link: kzread.info/dash/bejne/mWSCtdVsfdG2ops.html

We were so so lucky to have grown up in the 70s we will never see the likes of it again, the current generation are hell bent on self destruction.
