That album cover is one of my favorites...I'm 60 years old, and I've seen a Lot of album covers. The 'electric chair' with the headphones one the seat, and a smoking pipe in ashtray. I was a teen when I bought that album, and I laughed my butt off when I looked at the cover art closer, than what I did when I was in the store buying the album. Face the Music is one of my all time favorite ELO albums.

Every time Hector reacts to ELO a new Happy Universe bursts into existence

So this is the infamous ELO track with a backwards masking bit in the intro. Backwards masking was a recording technique where they recorded an audio track...then reversed the direction of the tape player and recorded that on another tape machine to experiment with different words, sounds, etc. The only way to decode the message was to A.)own a vinyl copy of the album B.)own a record player C.) insert record onto said record player D.)turn on the record player E.)place the needle onto the portion you wanted to listen to on the record and finally manually turn the record in the opposite direction from normal. In this track the message is: "Our music is reversible but time is not...turn back, turn back, turn back". This song has a lot of dissonance and chaotic sound effects and voices to represent a netherworldly aspect leading up to the hallelujahs and resolution of the chords back into a pleasing arrangement reminiscent of heaven...thus Fire on High. 😮 Jeff Lynne was a big Beatles fan and they experimented with backwards masking. The human ear likes to hear chords resolved. So dissonant chords make you uncomfortable. It's just how we are wired. So it is still a means of making you feel things even if it's uncomfortable. 😂

One thing I truly miss in todays modern music is the instrumental ,when i grew up ( born in early 60s) the instrumental was a common feature of the top 20 ,like Fleetwood Mac " Albatross " and Jean Michael Jarre " oxygen " and Emerson,Lake and Palmer " fanfare for the common man" and many many more. Great reaction.

Sounded like the beginning of a rock opera. Can’t even imagine seeing them in concert. Would have been an unreal experience

Saw them multiple times in their heyday, they were incredible. Great LASER shows, but the best was when the spaceship on stage opened up and they were inside playing…unbelievable. I believe it was the Out of the Blue tour. Second best stage show I’ve ever seen, just behind Pink Floyd - the GOATs. If you can, go see Jeff Lynn. He is still touring as Jeff Lynn’s ELO. I saw them a couple of years ago and they were awesome. Jeff’s voice was still spectacular.

In maine they used this on one of the amusement park rides at Fun Town for decades so it brings me back to my childhood.

Imagine in 1975, opening this album up and spinning this first track on face the music, I was hooked. Gems like evil woman, strange magic and especially nightrider, a brilliant album. NIGHTRIDER next please Mr Hector from the same album. “Not one word yet”, it’s an instrumental!! 😂😂😂😂

Based on Dante's Inferno it is a tune about the accession from hell to heaven- the choir singing "Fire on High" at the end. The start is also a dig at evangelicals in the U.S. who said that the previous ELO album had satanic versus in it.

Same here Hector, when we first dropped the needle on Face the Music Side 1 , this tune shocked us. Listening to ELO was usually singular closed door to your room experience, but after your mother yelled out’turn that shit down’, I knew it was gonna be great. Next cut is ‘Waterfall’ . Give it a listen- soothing and great Jeff Lynne voice. Your review was fantastic.

It's because after the previous album Eldorado some religious folk got upset and accused ELO of including secret devil worshipping messages ( particularly the song Eldorado "...no eternal life is meant for me"). Of course that was nonsense but Jeff Lynnne wrote this in response. The complainants took further legal actions that went on for years. Hence the later album and song Secret Messages.

I had an Aunt in my late teens who would tell me that records and bands were evil. Play the recordings backwards and it’s satanic words. I used to say who the heck plays a record backwards 🙄🙄😂😂

ELO, Huh - Used to listen to All their stuff, then saw them in concert at COBO in Detroit in the 70's. Only concert I ever went to where a band was booed so loudly. Lip sinking and the whole audience caught them. Probably a third of the audience left before the show was half over. Since then I change the channel whenever they come on the radio! Just sayin the facts. Try J Geils, great concerts!
