Electric Fan Conversion Install | Dodge Dakota

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

In this video we show the electric fan conversion install on a Dodge Dakota. We removed the mechanical clutch fan from the 5.9L v8 Magnum engine to reduce the drag on the engine and power loss that comes with driving a large mechanical fan. A mechanical fan is essentially like having a propeller on the front of your engine and even though it does have a clutch it still does spin even when not fully locked up. This parasitic drag causes a loss of power and efficiency from the engine. We installed this electric fan to increase the efficiency of the engine and regain some lost power!

    I got a Lincoln Mark VIII fan on 99 Dakota R/T and that thing is an absolute monster. It's just about the size of my radiator and it comes with a shroud. It absolutely defeated the AZ summer, traffic and all.

    I understand that you decided against this in the end. But I used your suggested parts but bought the dual 12" fan kit from Amazon. The relay has an extra wire for a 2nd fan. A month later it's still working great on my 96 Dakota and keeps the AC nice and cool in this extreme humid Georgia heat. The fans also keep the coolant temp at 185, and allows me to run the AC in stop and go traffic. Thanks for your guidance on this. Much appreciated.

    This is a great idea. I have a 99 Sport with the 5.2 and I can’t find an oem fan shroud anywhere local or online, plus Chrysler discontinued it. Sitting in traffic during the summer gets the engine really hot so I might just swap the fan clutch with an elctric fan. Good video. 👍

    yep good video, pretty straight forward. Only suggestion I would make for other people doing it, just jump off of the radio power ( as it only works when the key is on ) unless you have a ridiculous head unit that draws a billion amps lol. The reason I say that is in my Dodge Dakota the cigarette lighter always has power, so that option wont work for people with a truck like mine. (1988)

    What I'm doing is what I said in other comment. You can use the ac temp sensor. It will turn on when ur AC is on. It will turn on when your temp starts to go up. It does both already. Just get a lower temp sensor . You can also move / use a aftermarket sensor in two locations. AC and coolant neck area depending on engine. Usually one in block and on top. I'm still running an extra 2. 10 inch fans just in case. It's always good to have a back up of some kind. Or you can keep your fan clutch in truck.

    Your rango already has an efan. All 01+ Dakotas/Durangos do. You can delete the clutch fan but you may or may not have cooling issues with just the stock efan, YMMV

    I've gone down this road before with my 98 Dakota 5.2 4x4, that e-fan will not give you enough cooling in the warmer months. You need to locate a new or used efan from a 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee w/5.9. The 1998 GC with the 5.9 only came with a efan and provide way more cfm than that 16incher you put on. You will also need to get a 40amp relay to run it and heavy guage wiring. You can use your stock shroud and do a little modification to get the efan to fit in the middle to ensure your pulling air across the entire radiator or use the the shroud from the 98 GC and fit it in your radiator..The fan will be tuff to hunt down but there out there. BTW awesome truck!

    I have read that a shroud is no longer needed. The shroud with the clutch fan is used to funnel air because he clutch fan is so far away from the radiator. With an e fan being butted against the rad, I dont see how a shroud would help, especially if you use foam tape to create a seal around the new fan.

  • @mikedakota99

    @mikedakota99

    4 жыл бұрын

    @@JackstandJohnny the shroud is engineered to pull air across the entire radiator. Any OE electric fan in modern cars like the 5.7 hemi (like his silver truck) and aftermarket electric fan kits that are vehicle specific come with shrouds to maximize cooling(not mention the a/c condenser and trans cooler in the front of the radiator that require cooling). I live in Texas so pulling air just around a certain part of the radiator with 16 inch fan wouldn't cut the mustard. That Magnum 360 gets really hot. Maybe in California you might be able to get away with it with his current set up because of cooler year-round temperatures but sitting in traffic may just be enough to overheat that truck. Just my experience I've had with these V8 Dakotas.

    Hey sir...I realize this is an old video and you're tied up with your big move etc. I'm looking to do this type of conversion on a 99 Dakota with a 5.2l so basically a similar setup. Did you ever have any issues with this setup and did you get the wiring setup sorted out so that when the air conditioning is turned on the electric fan comes on? I replaced my fan clutch around 5 years ago and it's going out again so I was considering going this route. Thanks for the great content and thanks in advance for your time.
