Electric Company Sign Song

Ойын-сауық

One of the Electric Company's "Sign Songs" from the 70s. Found this off an old VCD I recorded off TV many years ago.

I recognize many of these signs from my New York childhood. I remember when "Fiddler on the Roof" and "Applause" were playing on Broadway, "Food" may have come from the old Daitch Shopwell, Gristede's or D'Agostino Bros. grocery stores, "WALK" was before the pedestrian traffic lights went pictorial, "RIGHT" came from The Right Bank restaurant (I saw them put the sign up!), "WAY" was from the "ONE WAY" signs, "AND" and "FRANCE" were from Rockefeller Center, "LEFT" and "RIGHT" were from traffic signs, and, of course, the final "you" was from the classic Uncle Sam poster, "I Want You for U.S. Army." Thanks for bringing back this lost era!

As I posted above. "NIGHT" evidently came from a theater marquee advertising a showing of the Marx Brothers' film A Night At The Opera. If you squint you can just make out the bottom half of the "ARX BRO" above "NIGHT". I'd like to know where "BLUE" came from because, interestingly, that was the only one shot at night.

I remember seeing this when I watched Electric Company when I was 3 years old back in 1973. I really picked up literacy from the show. I don't remember a time before being literate, so I don't recall ever seeing text on the show that was bleeped out and not being able to read it. When they would have a "sneak preview" of text before or after the show and bleep out what it says on the screen, I can only remember always knowing what it said. I imagine that before a kid gets literate, they are anxious to find out what the text says if they understand that it will be revealed on the next episode. "Tune in next time when so-and-so says 'Wah, wah, wah!'"

Hearing these segments all these years later really impresses you on the time and quality that went into these musical pieces and film montages. Amazing! I get a kick out of the voice-over- the man sounds like Ed Norton from the Honeymooners. I also like that "you know what I mean?" he tags on.

It's Labor Day,as I watch this and post this comment-to me,the end of this song, with last three words,"I love you!" with the triumphant hint of "Over the waves" at the very end,to me,can be a way of bidding farewell to "another summer of fun, under the sun." Happy Labor Day,and hope you had a great summer.

And now it's New Year's Eve as I watch this and comment again, with just 2 hrs and 20 minutes to go until we welcome in 2019(I live in PA, in the same time zone as New York City,of course). Again, in reference to what you said and to what I had said, something about this song leaving you with that typical bittersweet lump in the throat feeling-well in this case, bidding another Christmas holiday season goodbye until next year(when Santa will visit each and every one of us again), and of course bidding 2018 farewell and saying hello to 2019. I' will hit the half century mark in 103 more days(April 14),born the year Sesame street premiered and of course I grew up with Electric Company as well. Hope you had a Merry Christmas, I sure did. Happy New Year. Peace. :)

You can find this on the DVD box set, of Best of Electric Company, Volume 1--it was featured in the episode, which was first broadcast on February 3, 1977(during the show's final season, of course--it was later on that same April, when they ended production.)You can also find it, on the episode that aired in late Jan 1974(on Volume 2, of the box sets), only that one just has the chorus of kids singing the song twice, not the singalong part second time around, like here.)Great memories; thanks for posting!

This sign song first premiered in season two (1972-1973), on episode 142, which was aired on November 7, 1972, in which this sign song was repeatedly used in other episodes during later seasons like episode 79B, which was on the sixth and final season, in which that aired on February 3, 1977. But this song actually first premiered on November 7, 1972, during the show's second season.

Intensive Watching Observations: In the first shot, you can see a poster for the musical The Me Nobody Knows to the right of the one for Fiddler on The Roof. 5 of Me's cast and crew joined The Electric Company: cast members Irene Cara, Melanie Henderson and Hattie Winston; choreographer Pat Birch, and songwriter Gary William Friedman. (A 6th, Northern Calloway, moved to Sesame Street where he played David.) According to Wikipedia, Me Nobody Knows ended its run in Nov. 1971, so gives an idea of when this footage was shot. "NIGHT" evidently came from a theater marquee advertising a showing of the Marx Brothers' film A Night At The Opera. If you squint you can see the bottom half of the letters "ARX" and "BRO" above "NIGHT." Finally, on the bottom right of the fence/wall shown in the last shot are two large posters advertising a Gordon Lightfoot concert. (This is best seen on the DVD where you can freeze and zoom.) I wonder where the "BLUE" sign came from because it was the only one shot at night. Hopefully not in Times Square. (And it's not even blue.)

Erm, N-O, and far from it. Yonge never heard of 'sing-a-longs'? You can see great sing-a-longs on the (original and ONLY one which counts) Alvin and the Chipmunks, which features them often. One of my favourites is Ragtime Cowboy Joe (kzread.info/head/PLX4-lNUIzcL8E8JdzyJ59DzUSvN27g1c4), and they also had sing-a-longs on the Bulleinkle show (kzread.info/dash/bejne/mJyIrZibcczFZ6Q.html, and here’s another; kzread.info/dash/bejne/aq1msbKHo9XMdrw.html). That’s as far back so can recall offhand, but even I wouldn’t be foolish enough to say ‘that’s IT’, a as far back as MY recollections go - neither should anyone.

This was the *Sign Song* I was looking for at the moment, but now I'm confused: isn't the other one also called "Sign Song", or is its official name "Home Sweet Home"? On all the audio albums where the other song appears (including its cameo on the *Sesame Street Signs* album), its title is "Sign Song". Maybe someone can sort this out.
