@@nukaajitreddy3628 Battery and motor is IP67 Rated. Battery is completely sealed off from external environment, the cooling system is also closed loop ie the coolant never comes in contact with air or the battery itself, it only acts as medium of transferring heat

There's something which you guys need to understand. I'm electrical engineer and battery degradation is never linear, It is always logarithmic. This means the calculations which you have made is completely absurd. On top that, Battery degradation is heavily impacted by temperatures. Personally I travel only in the day. Which means 40 degrees is the temperatures at which I might use an EV. Regarding the cost, EV has a higher investment cost. EVs might be future like many people say, But, there are some major issues in battery technology. Despite these issues, companies are extremely greedy and are trying to encash customer demand rather than proving proper solutions. There are very few companies like Toyota who are trying to find solutions.

Hi Rachit @motoroctane I am a Nexon EV owner. I feel the problem with EVs is, they have become more of an appliance rather than a vehicle. And with poor manufacturing process added with below par dealer dominated support framework, makes it a gamble. If you got a decent car, then you might be happy. But if you have got a defective car, then you're at god's mercy. Sometimes it's worth thinking "are we ready for EV yet”. Here are the details for this observation. I purchased my car in Jan 2022. 1st Breakdown: 18th March 2022, location Bengaluru I was going for vaccination of my Daughter (4 months old at that time). My wife and baby had to wait for a couple of hours on the road in sun taking all the head and pollution waiting for the tow truck. Service centre guys told, it was a simple problem where a cable went loose. 2nd Breakdown: 5th January 2023, location Ooty. (Daughter 14th months old). On a family holiday, suddenly the car started showing a critical battery error and went into limp mode. The car had to be towed to Coimbatore service centre. We had to abruptly finish our trip and had to travel and stay in Coimbatore (charges extra paid from my pocket). Again as per the service centre, issue was very simple as some condensation had deposited on the LV ports. I wonder what would had happened if the car had broken down in the forest. 3rd Breakdown: 17th April 2023, location Bengaluru. Car had been lying in the parking lot as I had to visit my home town. After coming back, we I tried to start the car go again critical battery error, and had to sent it to the service centre. Now again I was told, it was a simple issue of HV cable loose in DC-DC. I had wrote to all contacts available over internet for 2 things. 1. To do a through checkup of the car & 2. Post launch of Nexon EV Max, as a cost cutting measure, Nexon EV(Now prime), doesn’t come with a bottom plastic guard to covers the internals. I asked to get me. (At my cost) Nothing has been done, till date. Got a call from Tata Motors Regional CRM. He listend and made an empty promise of fulfilling the asks. Till date they are “evaluating”. Sad to say govt works better than tata employees . So I would like to advise your viewers to think thrice before buying a Tata EV.

This is very true. I had the HV critical alert twice so far on Nexon EV prime and got stuck with my 4 yr old and wife in a U-turn! Never felt so unsafe being in a car. Car towing guy called after 2 hours. I had to hire a cab and send my wife and kid home. Luckily I was in city. But it was on May-1st. No service Center open for emergency breakdown. No service personnel available. So your emergency support is down the drain. Having an unreliable Nexon EV and not having reliable service support makes things even worse. I’m now so skeptical to use the car for distances more than 10 km

@@rocku354 yes I understand this feeling. We feel so helpless and insecure. And worst part is the manufacturer doesn’t respond to requests. Had it been any other “appliance” we can do return/exchange. But here you can’t. Even your ask for a through checkup is not fulfilled. And also I think online when you search you don’t get a forum where impacted people like us are sharing the pain.

Good work Rachit I also have Nexon EV Prime couple of days ago i had stuck on road in between traffic due to sudden Battery Drainage issue!! I had to wait more then 30 minutes to get call connect with customer care ! I started calling customer care @ 10.30 pm and call answered @ 11.00 pm and car towed @ 2.00 AM in nxt morning. Service centre took 3 day and took trial & found nothing and replied its a software update is available and we had upgrade the software. As u can think how a software be a reason of sudden battery loss? Let say an older software that was running on car since i bought suddenly it gets kind of EXPIRED on a date and it will be reason of failure. As i follow you guys i searched on multiple websites for is there any software update available? Surprisingly there is no such update released by company! When i asked them to provide the version of older one on my car and new updated version they failed to answer it as there is no such thing available. I noticed there is so much confusion in service centre guy’s Knowledge even i talked to technician, CRM of dealership, Regional OFFICER who look after EV complaints they all contradict their knowledge about how to use EV, Charging cycle, LOW PERFORMANCE MODE which enables 20% battery to get charged to charging, one of the guy said if u use fast charge an be a reason for battery issue! When i told him i had use fast charge only 2 times since I bought car he kept silence! Now if a fast charging is affecting such to batteries in such low time why company is promoting fast charging? I also find on multiple visits to service centre it seems there no such infrastructure & guidelines & training given to technicians till now and its working in gods mercy !!! There is so much to get know before someone buy an EV & like you Rachit be the source of knowledge Requesting you to be the voice of frustrated customers of TATA EV as i only have exposure to TATA as having TATA car filling and getting no help from customer care!! Once again Thank you for the knowledge you spreading keep up the good work and help current as well as new buyers

Another Advantages: 1. Almost No vibration and noise except tire and wind 2. Low CG.. So better handling and cornering and also less roll over 3. Almost no maintenance except tyre replacement 4. More boot space and Dickey under bonet in some case 5. Regenerative braking help to recharge battery, dissipate heat and provide longer life to brake (if a car has feature) 6. No need to shutdown engine at traffic signal 7. Eliminate PUC certificates 8. No clutch 9. More reliable due to less moving parts 10. Longer life.. May be 30 year and above (just wait and watch) if take care 11. Almost impossible to drive back ICE car if u have EV habit

To clarify, NMC batteries generally have an expected charge cycle range of 500-1500 cycles, while LFP batteries offer a higher range of 2000-5000 cycles. Moreover, LFP batteries exhibit a low degradation rate of just 2% per 1000 cycles. Therefore, it is reasonable to expect a much slower degradation of the Nexon EV's battery compared to the 12% degradation at 3.2 lakh kilometers in the case of Tesla. From a battery longevity perspective, the Nexon EV outperforms the XUV400 EV.

I have a colleague who is using tesla model s since 2012 and actually has 320,000 kms. His car performs much better though.

Commendable analysis done by @Motoroctane team. I just completed 580km high range trip covering 1700 feet elevation. It was very effortless drive and economical.

I drive around 84 Km (48% battery) everyday and as soon as i reach home i put my car on charging.... So my question is how many charging cycles my car battery can possibly reach....??? @MotorOctane

Hi Rachit. Thanks for such informative videos. I have one question very specific to the services. I was stranded in jungle yesterday in my ICE car after clutchplate was broken and that left gear lever stuck. Luckily i was able to get help from the locals who had knowledge of such ice vehicles. I know there was an option of roadside assistance. But i have seen waiting period is over 3-4 hours. Even for my electric two wheeler. While i was stationary at jungle in ghats. How much does it take for everyone to understand this complex machine? Also my another question is, we have to go to same dealers and authorize service centers only to maintain the warranty. But end up paying more than the actual cost as the service providers are limited. Do you see any progress in service providers network being extended to all over india?

From an engineering point of view(and someone who has built racing EVs), electric vehicles are much much much simpler than an internal combustion engine which have hundreds of moving parts. In an ev you basically have 3 major components - motor, controller and battery system. In due time we will have more service stations for electric vehicles than we have for ICE enginers.

More than explaining technology, ,after 5 years the battery will start to degrade rapidly and will cost approx 6 to 9 lakhs to replace the battery...as per today's prices. Imagine putting 9 lakhs on a 5 yr old car...a depreciating asset. Ev makes sense if you drive at least 100 km every day for next 5 yrs....that's a good roi. If it is just 20 -30k, you will be losing money.

Very informative video. You covered the statistics on cars catching fire. I thought you would give reasons for this happening. Stats can be twisted; facts are solid!

Hi Rachit.... A brilliant video with the detailing. I have got to believe and have seen that the temperature of the battery depends on the weather.. like in the humidity (Summer)... The battery world get really really hot which could lead to an exploration... In the winters the battery dies because of the cold wave....hence reducing the left of the battery even further What are your thoughts on this... Regards

Not a problem for liquid cooled batteries. Just buy a car which has around 50kWH battery.

Motoroctane really good video, people have a lot of misunderstandings regarding vehicle batteries and to explain to someone is painful. I recently attended an ev show and in Q and A there were battery questions and to explain them was pain.if someone says anything regarding battery will show them your video.

Did not expect an Indian youtuber to actually be this right about EVs. Kudos. The main problem of EVs in India is the pathetic battery capacity, high costs and no fast charging. Won't even consider what you're getting on MG, Hyundai, Tata, etc as fast charging. Tata especially is awful. And companies like Citroen is using air cooled batteries which will die quicker. Not to mention the dreaded HV critical battery issue on Tata cars and Tata's notorious service.

Dear Rachit, please add your research to identify the opensource tools and technologies that we can use our self to diagnose the BMS and ECU related issue by connecting the OBD ports. that helps to remove the dependency of service scenter loot. Also one session is required to explain the tips and tricks on fast chargers. simple hacks can save you on emergency situations and troubleshooting.

Very nice video.. just missed one very important point which is EV charge anxiety which leads to more charge cycles in less number of days and thereby decreasing the 12.5 years of battery life to 8 years. Hence, companies are giving max 8 years of warranty on the battery pack There is one more point you mentioned petrol car running cost as Rs 10-12 per km which is highly exaggerated. For a nexon, it shouldn’t be more than Rs 8 per km. You also didn’t cover the difference between purchase price of an electric car and a petrol car. For a nexon, the difference between top models is Rs 6 lakhs. You also didn’t talk about the resale value of EVs which is much lower than petrol cars currently.

I bought an ICE car this month and not an electric car because of reasons entirely separate from the ones covered in this video. Most of my reasons come down to, in my opinion, the extremely low charging speeds of the EVs that cost below 25 lakhs. 1) Even if you consider DC fast charging, the Nexon EV Max can charge at a measly 50 kW speed and it will take an hour to charge up from 0% to 80%. An entire hour of charging cannot compete with the quick 3 minute fuel up on an ICE car. 2) If I'm going on a very long trip, I don't want to make my family wait around for an hour when we don't want to just because the car needs it. The car should be serving us, we should not be servants to the car. 3) The comparisons of ICE vs Electric vehicles on KZread either never take into consideration this time wasted on charging or play it off as time we can spend with our family eating at a restaurant near the fast charging station. Well, this sort of forces us into breaks when we might not want one and also forces us to dine at a restaurant near a charging station. With an ICE car I can just go visit whichever restaurant or dhaba I want and not worry about the needs of my car. 4) There is a difference of nearly 5 lakhs between the feature equivalent variants of the petrol Nexon and the Nexon EV. That difference is simply too high to justify especially considering that buying this EV comes with the additional time commitment I previously mentioned. You may earn lost money back but you will never get back lost time. 5) Now if you say that most people go on long trips once in 3 months or so and can tolerate this time lost and they mostly use their cars for daily work commute then you still can't ignore the massive price difference over the petrol car equivalent. Most estimates on KZread say that your running would have to be really high for you to break even on the cost of an EV vs a petrol equivalent over a 5 year period. Keep in mind the money you "save" by not spending on an EV can be invested too and then breaking even with an EV becomes even more challenging. 6) Charging at home isn't as cheap as it is made out to be. If you charge on your home meter then you are driving up your unit usage and you end up paying more for using the power hungry appliances at your home as well like ACs, microwaves, fridges, PCs etc. 7) The EVs that are available below 25 lakhs are not born electric. They started as ICE cars and the chassis was slightly modified to fit a battery. This means the chassis was not designed with a battery in mind and the use of space for the battery is not at all optimal. It should be possible to have a sub 4 metre car with a skateboard platform that can fit a battery larger than the 40 kWh one in the EV Max. Furthermore, with time and advancements in technology this battery should become cheap enough and charge fast enough that we can have that 0% to 80% charge time to be under 15 minutes in our sub 25 lakh cars. The charging infrastructure also needs to improve big time not just in quantity but also quality. 250 kW chargers should become the only chargers worth calling as fast chargers, 50 kW chargers can't be seriously called "fast", even today. 8) It is absolutely worth waiting for the above technological advancements and infrastructure improvements while saving our money and buying ICE cars. Right now Tata and Mahindra are the only players in the budget EV scene and frankly Tata is dominating it. Only once competition comes in from Hyundai, Suzuki, Honda, Volkswagen and the other big companies will the consumers start reaping the benefits of more options. I hope Rachit addresses these points also. The points covered in this video were honestly low-hanging fruit and very easy to address but there are other genuine reasons to stay away from EVs in India for the time being.

Same brother financially speaking it would take an ev around 10 yrs with 1000km monthly driving to break even. Then you can just resell ur Ice and buy the then advanced electric tech available.

There is lots of youtubers but non of them make people awareness videos, from today i will only see your videos regards cars and bikes

The biggest issue that wasn't touched upon is the criteria of application for defective or degraded battery replacement under warranty. Whether use it or not they will deteriorate naturally just like a mobile phone. Still 8 years of decent service life can be expected albeit with falling range with falling year. For me until 2030 EV doesn't make sense, government and ev lobbies won't allow for strong Hybrids which is the best option without worrying about poor charging infrastructure and range anxiety, so petrol ICE is the best option in petrol version

Very well explained , but there is a lot of work still needs to be done in terms of adapting to ev infrastructure in India, take an example of CNG , its been around 20 years since CNG has been implemented, but still today not all the pumps are having that CNG facilities , I see vehicles standing in large numbers in pumps to get the CNG refilled.., also not to forget with fast chargers the charging time is 45 mins min.., and with regular chargers the avg time is around 6-8 hours, yes ev's save money but there will be an added burden of not only charging it but charging it on time so that it should be good to go to the next day , if forgot to charge then take a 🚖.., unlike petrol / diesel cars , Regarding the number of fire catches in petrol cars vs ev's , the number is higher in petrol car because the majority of people are still using ICE cars as compared to ev's, which are relatively new..

the fire stats are per 1lakh cars, not absolute numbers for example if 1 million EVs are on the road, then only 250 caught fire (25 EVs per 100K cars) same way, if 1529 ICE cars caught fire per 100K cars, then the actual fire cases of ICE cars over say 100million ICE cars would be 15,29,000 to adjust for the disparity in the number of EVs and ICE, we use per 1000 or per 10k or per 100k figures like used here you can also use percentage, its essentially same as percetage

Do they count as under ICE car fire data as well ,i guess it will count under ICE cars only.., if they do then the stat is not correct because in most cases the fire is caught in the vehicles running on CNG or LPG ...

@@prashwin0917 bro I definitely live in India , like you do.., but its very important to have some knowledge before writing anything.., having a fast chargers is different thing and having a charging stations is different .., you can't charge your vehicle with your chargers alone..., and if you are trying to say that fast chrging stations are more than petrol pumps in India.., then I think you are an Idiot.., bs bkchodi krne aaye ho yaha.., go to some rural areas, jaha p aaj bhi electricity nahi h.., and in developed cities you can find charging stations easily but in semi urban areas.., it is still a concern.., and fast chargers bhi take around 45 mins .., and if those stations already has some ev's lined up fir kya krega bhaii.., khada rhio 2 ghnte fast charger leke 🤣😂.., and also there are some cases jaha 20% battery me logo ki cars bilkul band pdd gyi h , so uss situation if u r with family the what would you do ? Fast charger leke ghoomta rhega kya ? 🤣😂 , offce se aake car charging p lgani bul gaya to agle din boss ko kya bolega ki battry low thi car ki isiliye late ho gaya , ya leve lega ya cab krke aayega .., b sensible man...

Very informative video, this video cleared many of my doubts

There few points I would like shed some lights on 1. The charging cycle example is kind of misleading as you don't fully zero the car than charge it to full, it's around 20-30% and than charge it to full or 80-90% hence charging cycle will be around 100-150 cycles per year for 50km/day and will be around 200-250 for 100km/day. 2. Secondly given the Indian hot weather condition I still have my doubts on battery capacity holding around 85-90% or usable even after 8 years when used to extended period of time, given all the EV data are from the countries with cold climate which doesn't effect the battery as much even if they get hot. 3. Yes companies are giving warranty of 8 years but people often sale their cars after 8-10 years only and without warranty and high cost of insurance the resale value of car would take a big hit with already initial price gap of 3-5 lakhs. So saving on EV could eventually be cancelled out. - Lastly it was a great video MotorOctane you have cleared almost 90-95% of the doubt on EV batteries for all people.

Hey Nitin 1. Even if you look at 250 - it is still 3 lakh kms. 2. Battery drains charge fast in cold more than heat. It depends on how do you drive, charge your car to retain your battery percentage.

Battery degradation happens mostly when the charge level is near the extremes (0-15% and 85-100%). Avoiding such charge levels is actually better for the lifespan. The estimated no. of total charge cycles is calculated with a full depth of discharge but if the extreme charge levels are avoided then the total number of charge cycles increases

We went to Goa last week and stayed in Le meridian hotel and there we saw very less charging stations for the EV cars… so not sure how we can buy these EV cars

Economical 😂 What? a nexon costs 21 lakhs If thats edonomical for you then go ahead And running cost is only low till it becomes mainstream Its going to cost as much as petrol and diesel

Your audience is already well informed about the price of the battery. 8.5lakhs is a lot of money to replace the battery (Nexon) Even if it gets cheaper it will still be in lakhs.

Ecosport engine rebuild costs 3L, mere mamaji ki 3y old ecosport got engine rebuilt from his own pocket since company cited some BS reasons for failure which was not covered under warranty (this is around 2015-16)

Unlike engines, All EVs will have to replace their batteries whether in 12 years or 25. And that will affect the resale value significantly. No one is going to buy a 15 year old Nexon with a range of 80-100kms. They will have to replace the battery.

​@@hiteshlalwani8039 but why resale it? Replace battery after 10 yrs and car is new again. Battery technology is changing much faster than ICE. 10 years is a small period for any significant change in petrol or diesel engines but After 10 yrs one would be getting much better batteries, technology wise to replace the old ones, so for me a use EV with new battery is a better value than a used ICE car with same or even replaced engine.

@motorcotane If we have very less driving usage like yearly less then 30-40k km then it will effect bettery life ? I have new activa and not used that much daily so it's battery goes down and need to replace battery...so this kind of issues happened in electric car?

My neighbours Nexon EV's battery has been already changed 3 times in 50k kms. Imagine what will happen after warranty 😂 Each battery costs more than 8.5 lakhs

Are you sure? Doesn’t seem possible. There are many petrol and diesel cars where engine is changed in the first few thousand kms - that doesn’t mean all engines will be bad.

3 times seems exaggerated. People have competed more than a lakh kms in the Nexon EV with no such issues. Only a handful had their batteries changed and that too only once. I'm sure this would make news cause everyone likes to bash EVs.
