The batteries are modular. This company is definitely going to go thru the ups and downs associated with development. They have some of the best boats on the water and one of the best teams designing and building them....in the world.

Here in Germany we have a lake which is used as drinkwater reservoir, so no fuel is allowed on/at the lake. There are 2 full electric passenger boats, carrying up to 250 people each. The full roundtrip takes 2 hours and is fun, silent gliding. However, there is no current or waves. The ships are operating 10-12 h a day and charging over night. The total operating costs are less then using Diesel, even taking the expensive Li batteries into account.

Yes, that’s the perfect scenario for an electric boat, a body of water with no waves or current.

@@RoughInlets I'm pretty sure that Silent-Yachts are using LiFePo4 batteries for their power banks. Much more stable than regular Li-Ion cells.

This WILL be slowing down the release of their e-boat though which is a pity, I was actually thinking about one since it would be perfect for the rivers and smaller lakes up here!

I think you nailed it. While just like EV road vehicles, I think electric will be forced on us, day trippers, sandbars and sunset cruises will be their primary use for a long time forward. Battery (& charger) technology will advance, but when you think of the relative difference in mileage of a boat vs. a car, it will take a lot of battery to be able to distance cruise - then imagine the back up at the recharging docks. Greenline's hybrid solution may be workable, but IMO pure electric is for puddle hoppers right now.

Don't forget, gas burns too.!! There are so many boat fire due to fuel leaks.

Do boats actually "burn to the ground?" Maybe to the waterline??

When an electric car gets in an accident hazmat teams are required for the cleanup I assume the same for electric boats.

I have been running a remote control electric boat for years. No issues whatsoever... Oh there was this one time the batteries died in the remote and later that same day a Ranger Bass boat tried to run it down and kill it. Lucky for me he didn't have the right spinner bait.

I thought that Purple boat was running nice then saw it was a Bahama 31 . I think they are the widest at 11' beam in the 31' class mono's plus being among the very highest quality boats build wise . That boat is a rare semi custom Unicorn . I'll take that boat no matter what effin' color it is . Too bad about the Twin Vee bbq . Large amounts of electricity and salt water together sketches me out .

Must match or be similar to powerboats in these attributes 1. Cost 2. Power 3. Travel distance per charge 4. Weight 5. Space 6. Safety Then definitely it would be more widely used :)

Love the Rough Inlets videos. I say Yes to Electric Boats. I have one that meets my needs well. See videos on my channel. I'm using LFP batteries, which don't suffer from Thermal Runaway like many other Lithium battery chemistries. For the moment it's not that fast and won't go very far, but the next motor will be more powerful, and I can add batteries and solar panels to increase range. So Far So Good!

Electric boats would be great if the sun deck has a big solar panel on its roof...... and that would not be a balcony up there either...

Water has a magical skill to enter, sooner or later, basically any space in a boat. That IMHO is the biggest problem related to electrical boats, the situation at sea is absolutely and totally not comparable to a electric car on the road. Sure its the future, but maybe not with the technology we have today, not in my boat anyway.....

Trolling motors are good but Don't really want electric as the primary power.

The electric jet skis aren't even out yet but this is meant to be a recipe for disaster

I think that, just like cars, electric boats are here to stay, and just like cars you can’t compare their power with the power an internal combustion engine, not now at least. Having said that, battery operated motors have the the *big* advantage of their simplicity and much fewer moving parts. Personally yes, I’d own one of those and operate rather close to shore. On the other hand Lithium ion batteries make me a bit nervous because sometimes they explode, so yeah 🤷‍♂️

Electric and water do not mix oh, it's been a known fact for years. If for some reason you are out swimming around the boat. And there is an accidental discharge through one of the through hul l intakes. What do you think is going to happen I don't want to say but it won't be nice. And accidents happen everyday no matter how many precautions you take when building something. So I say absolutely not those are going too far with electric.

No doubt in my mind that the UN/WEF will mandate the phasing out of new gas outboards, just like cars. Nations/states can try to oppose it though for as long as possible.

Electric boats are following the electric car development. Lithium batteries are safe if you keep them dry. Tesla and other manufacturers have reinforced & sealed batteries so they don't become a problem unless they are structurally damaged. But a gas tank holds the same potential problem. The biggest problem is storing enough energy for your day on the water. My gut feeling will be electric motors with a gasoline generator on board to recharge the batteries once they get 50% low. It would be nice to run 20 miles offshore and troll silently for a few hours enjoying conversation without shouting. Then fire up the generator on the ride in.

Great strides have been made in the electric boating market. The only thing holding the market back is the battery technology. Several European sailboat manufacturers are offering 100% electric boats such a Salona. Candela makes a hydrofoiling electric speed boat in which they have great success. There is currently over a years waiting list to buy one. But like the electric car market once there is enough interest even larger strides could be made in the marine industry.

if one can afford a $500k boat, fuel economy / electric propulsion is not an issue.

I wanted a direct injection, no glow plugs, no spark plugs. Diesel outboard. No such luck. Why diesel for fuel economy, safety (less likely a fuel leak will catch on fire), and diesel is cheaper at the dock. $1 per gallon cheaper. Nothing was available everyone wants an outboard that goes fast, need one that reves to 5-6,000 rpms.

Once they get the battery chemistries straightened out I think we'll see a lot more of them. As you said in the video, this is a _prototype boat_ from TwinVee. I suspect they didn't have the battery compartment(s) completely sealed or they used a set of batteries built up from either 18650 or 21700 cells like the Tesla uses. Standard Li-ion's do _NOT_ like water, LiFePo4 batteries are much more stable.

HARD PASS.... electric boats, regardless of "Battery technology" have not place on water. Fresh or Salt water (salt in particular)... water and electricity are NOT a match at all! Specially when you combine high capacity/voltage batteries and water, as we saw in the video. I can see them in vehicles (virtue signaling) for now, but tech has a LOOONG way to go before they have a useful use...

100 years ago they used coal and bunker fuel, 20 years ago they said no way 4 strokes could compete with 2 strokes, in 25 years electric boats will the norm.

Subs are electric. ...and its the boat type. If I had a sailboat yes, but not a powerboat with an idiot at the helm. Electric gets you away from expensive fuel. Probably that boat fire was from unusual boat abuse.

@@petekensy5451 Yes, for the most part you are correct but bear in mind that sequestering emissions at the power plant where they can be dealt with en masse is the first step in reducing the footprint. Having millions of FF burning power plants running around higgelty piggelty injecting NOX into the atmosphere is the challenge. Also more green power( possibly clean nukes too) comes on line every day. Its going in the right direction.

Until the infrastructure is in place all over the US , electric boats and cars are just a fad .

the biggest problem to be solved for electric boats is the limited length of the extentioncable to connect it with the powerline.

@@RoughInlets You know I’m going to have to say no still. Fire is the worst thing you need on a boat. Batteries that are used for continuous high draw for motors are notorious for heating up and catching fire. I personally would not risk my family or friends lives. Maybe maybe if the batts were for thrusters that aren’t used as much I would consider it.

Lithium batteries are incredibly toxic, 'all electric' sounds great, but the reality is spent lithium will ruin any environment. Once they're spent where will they be disposed, they're toxic for decades to come.
