Elderly Man Paralyzed By Cop Tasing Awarded $100 Million

69-year-old panhandler Jerry Blasingame was left paralyzed from the neck down after Atlanta Police Officer Jon Grubbs brutally tased him, causing a jury to award him $100 million. Dr. Rashad Richey and Sharon Reed discuss on Indisputable. Tell us what you think in the comments below.
Read more here: atlantablackst...
"A 69-year-old panhandler in Atlanta who sustained a life-changing injury after he was tased by a police officer in the city has been awarded by a nine-figure judgment by a jury. Civil rights advocates note that despite the historic victory, the officer, who the court decided used excessive force, is still employed by the city.
Jerry Blasingame’s conservator Keith Edwards sued the city of Atlanta, the Atlanta Police Department, and one of its officers, Jon Grubbs, on behalf of his client, filing the civil suit in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Georgia on May 7, 2019. The ask was for his medical bills (both past and future) acquired as a result of the police-involved injury that made him a quadriplegic with little use of his arms to be covered by the defendants"

It's elder abuse. For panhandling. Apparently "punish the poor" is a mantra in Atlanta (and many other places).

Panhandling isn't a crime, the Reed v Town of Gilbert decision made it clear that content based regulations on speech, like asking for money, are unconstitutional, no matter what local ordinances may say. It just happens that the targets of these unconstitutional laws are often too poor to challenge them, or they'd all have been totally stricken years ago. So this poor man was paralyzed for engaging in constitutionally protected speech by a tyrant bully who probably never paid his victim another thought, just another day at the office cracking skulls. It's absolute insanity he still has a job, any job, let alone as a cop.

I hope they appeal it (if they can), and they end up paying $200 million. The poor man's circumstances were unfortunate enough without such horror visited upon him. Best wishes and love to Mister Blasingame. Great report. Respect from Ireland.

I need to understand the thought process behind keeping a cop who paralyzed someone employed as a police officer. How much more proof do they need that he’s terrible at his job? He should be in prison. For attempted murder. But he’s back at work? Being paid by the people??? Lunacy!

For sure! Even if he hadn't fallen badly, a taser can be deadly for an elderly person (or someone with a heart condition). And for what? Because he ran? I would have run too of confronted with that face. He looks very mean, and I doubt he approached the elderly gentleman in a friendly manner.

The only danger to the cop was to his fragile ego. The old man not listening to his orders and fleeing made the cop feel disrespected, so he probably felt that he needed to make the old man pay for that by using the tazer against him. Perhaps the cop has daddy issues, perhaps his dad used to abuse and punish him as a child, so now he is projecting that hate towards elderly men?

Nobody sets out to be homeless. I've been there, and it's a terrifying labyrinth to navigate, even for someone of sound mind and body. It's something that happens incrementally, sometimes because of poor decisions, sometimes for reasons beyond your control. Irrespective of the reasons- being without a home, or the condition of being destitute- is NOT CRIMINAL, while criminalizing the ACT OF ASKING PEOPLE FOR HELP is immoral, unethical, and is a discretionary offense that police NEED NOT ENFORCE. This cop has no business in law enforcement. When there is ZERO accountability, there is ZERO incentive to modify behavior.

The poor man was basically surviving by asking for money asking for a few dollars or maybe some change, so who was he harming, so the tyrant saved people from being asked for money instead the tyrant cripples the man and now he loses $100 million dollars. This story should not be over until this cop is arrested charged found guilty and sentenced to life or until the older gentleman is able to walk again

This cop is nothing but a bully and he need to be fired never to work as a cop any longer. Being poor is not a crime and asking for help shouldn't be a crime. Bit it is a crime what this cop did to this senior citizen and causing him to be paralyzed for the rest of his life.

They pushed it, because they expected to win the way they almost always do. This cop ought to be ashamed of himself. This man's health is worth more than money.

So you mean to tell me that the young cop couldn't catch up with a 65 year old man without pulling out a taser? He should've been fired on that alone.

They were hoping he'd die before he reached trial and they'll probably withhold payments until he dies so that nothing has to be paid at all.
